Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: leftydee Date: 05 Jan 06 - 02:28 PM I rent an office from a cleaning company so I posed your question to the owner. She uses the Electrolux Boss for all her crews. The reason being that she's tried all kinds of different vacuums and found very little difference in what the machine did. She said more money meant more weight generally, but no more efficiency. She also pointed out that if you pay $2000 for a Dyson you could buy 35 Electrolux Bosses for the same money. If you threw one away every year for 34 years you'd still be money ahead and always using new equipment. Sounds reasonable to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Janie Date: 05 Jan 06 - 05:23 PM The last time Consumer Reports reviewed vacuums--none of the really high-end brands were worth the extra $$$$. I went with one of their "Best Buys" which at the time was a Kenmore cannister. I was switching from a Sharp Upright that had finally died. I am satisfied with the Kenmore EXCEPT the hose can not be reversed to blow it out when I do something stupid like vacuum up lots of pine needles from the Xmas tree. (But I am teachable. This year I used the shop vac.) Janie |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: GUEST,wordless Woman Date: 05 Jan 06 - 09:02 PM My Dyson works wonderfully well; no problems at all. An attachment on my sister's Dyson broke. She called the company and they sent out a new one free. I have a Hoover in the first basement, a Dyson on the first floor, a Dirt Devil on the second floor, and an Electrolux on the third. I prefer the Dyson over the others. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: PoppaGator Date: 06 Jan 06 - 12:33 AM Just witnessed a very convincing salespitch/demonstration of the Miele line. Their machines are so tightly sealed that ALL the dust stays vacuumed ~ none of it escapes back out ~ and also the sucking velocity remains high even as the bag fills up. The Mieles seem to be in a class by itself, but of course are priced accordingly. The salesman criticized Consumer Reports for failing to use their particulate-measurement equipment (stuff they routinely use when tesing automobile emissions) when rating vacuum cleaners. Seems that their "best buy" recommendations, like the Kenmore, spew a fair amount of dirt right back out. We're looking at cleaning out a moderately mold-infested home, where we may expect spores and mites etc. to continue growing for a while before we can finally kill 'em all for good. So we may decide to spring for the extra quality HIPA filter vacuum. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Jan 06 - 04:31 AM If you're cleaning out a mouldy house, it might be worth hiring a super duper industrial 'suck the nails out the floorboards' machine once a month for a while. No matter how powerful a domestic cleaner is, there are some things that it just won't shift. A regular going over with the industrial version should pick up the mites and spores that the domestic missed. We also went for the 'two vacuums' approach. We have the Dyson downstairs but as I was unable to lugg it upstairs for a while, we got a little upright that keeps it bearable upstairs. It's helped by having linoleum on the bathroom floor and floorboards/rugs in 2 out of 3 bedrooms. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Mr Red Date: 06 Jan 06 - 07:31 PM well my experience with a Dyson is that the early models have high wedge-shaped noses - the later models are lower - this is important of you want to get under furniture. the parking of nozzles is better thought-out on later models too. But Dyson is a very good choice generally. Mr Dyson's original factory is still just down the road from me but his vision is global. Although mine has no bag - it does have filters which still have to be changed - though seeing the state of the collecting chamber is beeter than the invisible bag. The air outlet is pretty strong and seems to blow everywhere, stirring up the dust. Not sure how that compares with other cleaners but any that have a lot of suction will have a lot of blow - it is just how the air is expelled that is different. David Essex (allegedly) once bought a vacuum cleaner as a present for his ex-wife saying "it is something to occupy her mind" -- oooooerrrrrrrrr. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: number 6 Date: 13 Jan 06 - 10:44 PM Here's an update on the new vacuum cleaner selection .... we have decided to go with the Beam 875 central ... this will replace the burnt out CanVac. I wasn't keen on a central but my wife Ann firmly was ... 2 reasons I didn't want the central is the miles of hose you have to lug around, and beleive me it's easier to haul an upright or cannister up and down 4 flights of stairs .. the other reason is that the old CanVac was like being directly beside an F15 taking off when it was switched on, that's hard on the old ticker when your goofing off in the garage and the missus decides to vacuum .. well, there is a model of hose we can get that is lighter and more flexible, also the Beam is a hell of a lot quieter. In saying all this, I sincerely appreciate everyone's input and suggestions. sIx |

Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: number 6 Date: 17 Jan 06 - 05:55 PM We don't have a basement in our house ... the garage is my workshop, or what can be best described as one. sIx |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Sorcha Date: 28 Mar 06 - 03:57 PM refreshing so I can trace....I'm about to need one |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Moses Date: 29 Mar 06 - 07:02 AM We had an Electrolux cylinder for yonks. It finally gave up the ghost and I bought a Dyson bagless cleaner. An expensive top-of-the range model. Never again. There was dust everywhere when it needed emptying (despite great care from me) and the power cable had to be completely pulled out before use but took a lot of fiddling about to get it to retract. And it was an awkward shape for storage I now have a Miele (bagged) cleaner which was also expensive and purchased mainly because it has a good pet-hair/dander filter. It is powerful, easy to empty, has a long hose and is reasonably stable when perched on the stairs. The hose/cleaning head clips into a socket in either the upright or reclined positions for storage and the tools all fit neatly inside the casing. I would recommend it although the bags are expensive (but they hold a lot). I've had it about 3 years. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Paco Rabanne Date: 29 Mar 06 - 07:27 AM I don't know. We have servants for that sort of thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Scoville Date: 29 Mar 06 - 09:53 AM We have an old Electrolux--well, my mother swears it's not that old but we've had it as long as I can remember so I'm guessing it's about 25--and we had to replace the hose once (it's the kind that has a separate body, a long hose, and then the head/handle that you use to vacuum) but other than that it has run without a hitch. I've never liked vacuuming stairs but, really, it's not that bad because it has the smaller nozzle attachment and the hose is very flexible (I don't know if uprights are better for stairs or not since this is the only vacuum cleaner I've ever used). It has bags but it doesn't make a mess when you change them, and the head is flat enough to get under almost all of our furniture. It's heavy but I'm sure the newer ones are lighter. It's not heavy enough to be a problem unless you have problems with your arms (my mother is badly arthritic but the rest of us manage it fine). |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: GUEST,ED Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:27 AM I have two Miehles and I love them. All the others turned out to be expensive disposables. The bagless system are nasty and just horrible for allergy sufferers. You can always get cheaper third party bags and filters that make it well worth your while to us. I would get the powered rug attachment; it's a dream. Good luck. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: GUEST Date: 19 Oct 06 - 02:19 PM 7 months between posts!! I wonder what the record is...? |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: Bill D Date: 19 Oct 06 - 02:30 PM oh, we had one yesterday that was 5-6 YEARS between posts....some newbie pops in, uses the 'search', finds an old thread and refreshes it without noticing the dates! |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: puck Date: 19 Oct 06 - 03:49 PM We have a Dyson. They are brilliant. If they break down they come and take it away and it is back the day after, fixed free for nothing!! I have had dyson for the last - seems like - ten years at home, but also worked as steward at Salisbury Rugby Club where we had one. It was always a major hoovering job on a Saturday evening following a match, with mud everywhere after the supporters all trekked thru to get there beers at the bar. Was it a problem for the Dyson..... not at all. That was hoovering on an industrial scale!! P |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: number 6 Date: 19 Oct 06 - 04:03 PM No problem if a 'newbie' pops in and refreshes a post, or a vetran catter at that ... why not recycle a post if it concerns a topic of interest. Vacumn cleaners are an appliance that cost a considerable amount ... if someone wants other opinions from catters before going out to purchase .. creating a post, refreshing it or whatever is a good idea. sIx |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: GUEST,lox Date: 19 Oct 06 - 04:21 PM Builders and plasterers tend to go with a HENRY. They should know. I got rid of my dyson and bought a brand new henry. It is wicked! V. powerful! There are two power settings. I keep it on 70% so the rugs dont get hoovered up. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Vacuum Cleaner From: bobad Date: 19 Oct 06 - 04:56 PM I just purchased a new vac yesterday - a Eureka - $79.00 and it comes with a headlight. My wife loves it. |
