What will it take to get the ol' Mudcat to run better? I know it frustrates everyone. Will money help? Is there something I can do to my computer? I'm sure if there's a solution a lot of folks will be willing to help out.

MOney never hurts - If Max has *EVER* had so much as 50% of the annualoperating costs covered I would be very surprised (let alone his own time)

It requires money, and time, in the hands of Max and Jeff, I think. In point of fact, it is running faster than it has in years past, and handling much more traffic.

Max is the strategy-setter and high-level design dude for the site. He really is the only one who can provide full answers.

After reading a recent post of Dounels' and a couple others, what about the consideration of posts backed by fact, not feeling. Is it possible the the 'Cat' is ashamed of displaying those baseless posts and is reluctant to do so. thus slowing down the operation?

I don't think the 'cat has become anthropomorphic to that extent yet. I might be wrong. After all, the vote is still out on whether or Not Joe Offer is just an AI sub-routine

Which only means that he's an Intelligence. Personally, I think he's a minor subroutine, albeit a very intelligent one and his coder should be congratulated.

I ran this statement:

SELECT FROM clones WHERE lastname = "Offer" AND WHERE dna = "1"

and got the response

NULL SET RETURNED.

Ergo, Joe Offer is a subroutine, not a flesh-and-blood person.

Making it mandatory to register and having to 'sign in' to post. No more GUEST posting.

That would make it better.

not 'register'...but CHOOSE a name, even if you don't accept a cookie...no just 'plain' guests. There ARE reasons to allow posts by those who are new, scared, or who have real reasons for not using a registered name....I KNOW of a couple of forums where you can't post without adopting SOME name.

Yeah; but I don't think anonymity, while it is the most irritating thing about guttersniping, is the cause of any woes. The individuals who forsake all manners, all etiquette and all courtesy in order to dramatize their mis-attributed angers are the core of the problem, and the steadiest long term answer I know to that is continued and steadfast courtesy and peer pressure.

I am realizing that even though food fights in the lunch room are fun, they don't amuse the janitor, or the teachers, or the other students.... :D Grant me the grace to remember this under provocation, next time.

What real reason do you need not to register ... if your shy, scared take your time before you post .... it's a shame why one has to be scared anyway, I noticed people here do accomdate and welcome new members .... and usually it's the GUESTs who exhibit malicious attacks.

I also know of some forums where you have to register before posting .. and it works very well.

I find this forum exceptional ... I also appreciate the different views and appreciate opposing arguments ... but eliminating the GUESTS would get rid of a lot of excess garbage posts and inhibit malicious attacks.

I will admit I have posted under GUEST (I'm the Ghost of) and I'm sure a number of others here have also, let's face it it can be fun at times ... but I can see that in doing so you it can contribute to abuse and sinister deceit.

I'd like to know whether threads like the MOAB have a noticable effect on performance, bandwidth, etc, etc. I don't like the idea that single careless or malicious click puts (a guess here) a 0.5Mb load on the network for everyone.

As long as there has been a Mudcat, there have been "issues" which Max, Joe, et al ALWAYS claim can only be fixed by them, and no one else can help. Except by sending money. And the problems never get fixed.

And Clinton, Max certainly knows how to block an ISP--he has blocked mine for saying what I just said in the above paragraph. You see, that is the only TRUE sin you can commit here--pointing out the fact that Max collects the money, does whatever the fuck he wants with it, never so much as acknowledges, much less thanks the people who donate, and then never resolves the reliability problems that have plagued this site for years.

And before all of you claim "how would you know guest, you probably never donated a dime"--I have. That is how I know whereof I speak.

Clinton is right. Money donated here is as good as flushing it, but it makes a few people here feel better about themselves, so they do it. What is needed is a new site owner who is dedicated to bringing the site up to snuff. Max is not that person.

I'm in total agreement with you gnu. Those that feel that they ain't getting a fair shake for their money should a) go elsewhere or b)start their own site.

In comparison to the cost of cable, a paperback book or a night out the enjoyment quotient from the 'Cat is very good value for the contribution that Kendall and I have made.

We will continue to support the Mudact and say thankyou to the likes of Max, Pene, Joe et al for their voluntary and unpaid work in keeping it rolling along.

I will be putting another shawl in the auction before too long and all proceeds will go to the fund.

One of the things that may help would be for all members to look at there PM's and delete all the ones that are no longer useful.
Then copy and paste all other pm messages to a word document and save it.
Then delete the remaining PM's.

I have to admit to being very lazy with deleting my pm's and they sure do mount up.
I am now going through them little by little to remove them all.

The other thing, is how long are normal threads kept by Mudcat?
Most threads are worthless after a certain time and must be taking up a huge amount of unescesary storage, which must affect processing as well.
Deleting or archiving personal messages might make your personal page load a bit quicker, but that's about it. Deleted messages stay in the Mudcat database, but they are accessible only by certain administrative people - not by the regular Clones. All the personal and Forum messages posted over the 9-year history of Mudcat are still there, and they take up only a few gigabytes of space - almost every hard drive on the market today can hold the entire Mudcat database.
But yes, I have to say that we aren't satisfied with the reliability of Mudcat, either. We're doing what we can; but so far, that hasn't been enough. Still, somehow we've survived for 9 years - I think that's a pretty good accomplishment.
    -Joe Offer-

I donated a few bob a while ago.

A receipt would have been nice, but unfortunately it didn't happen.

I'll probably donate again sometime.

Maybe I'll get a receipt then. Just for my own peace of mind about the transaction.
