Awwwww. Lovely voice.

Grammy-Winning Singer Lou Rawls Dies
From Associated Press
January 06, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Lou Rawls, the velvet-voiced singer who started as a church choir boy and went on to sell more than 40 million albums has died at age 72. He won three Grammy Awards in a career that spanned nearly five decades and a range of genres.

Rawls died early Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was hospitalized last month for treatment of lung and brain cancer, his publicist Paul Shefrin said. His wife Nina was at his bedside when he died, Shefrin said.

The family and Shefrin said Rawls was 72, although other records indicate he was 70.

Well, I don't listen much to pop radio anymore (what I do hear and know a bit about I get through osmosis from our childen - a fourteen y/o singing lass into Kelly Clarkston; and, a seventeen y/o little drummer boy into heavy metal) but Lou will be missed. A great voice
with a wonderful presentation. He was in town here in Fort Worth at
the Bass Hall a short time ago doing a split show - the first half being a tribute to Sinatra and the second half doing his own thing.
I wish it could be said that I was there, but unfortunately it would be untrue.

Since I don't listen to pop radio anymore I don't know if there are any young, real R & B singers out there who will carry the torch; if not, we can only bemoan the loss of those that are slowly going away one-by-one. Like folk music - the only way it stays alive is for us to keep on playing it like there's no tomorrow - or someday it won't have a tomorrow. We'll miss ya' here in Texas, Lou - RIP.

Absolutely right, Mariner. His harmony with Sam Cooke is wonderful. Tomorrow I shall play my wife's Blue Note CD. RIP Mr. Rawls.

As fB implies, Lou provided the second vocal on many of Sam Cooke's hit records. He wasn't publicly credited (at least, not on the record labels), so many folks are unaware of this important part of his recorded legacy.

What I didn't know before reading some recent obits was that Lou and Sam grew up together in Chicago as elementary school classmates. There must have been some sweet sweet singing in that schoolyard!

He sang at a public interfaith memorial service for the 9/11 victims about a week after the attack, at San Francisco's civic auditorium. A true soul singer as well as pop singer, as the above mentioned work with Sam Cooke testifies to. R.I.P.
