Subject: happy? – Jan 7 (Distaff Day) From: Abby Sale Date: 07 Jan 06 - 09:13 AM Jan 7: Distaff (or St. Distaff's) Day in England. This is when the women return to their work (spinning) after the Christmas festival season. Wild games were once played on this day, with men setting fire to the distaffs of flax or wool, and women dousing the men (and, presumably, the fire) with buckets of water.
And so on until 40 is reached, then you have a skein. [thanx Sam Hinton] Copyright © 2005, Abby Sale - all rights reserved What are Happy's all about? See Clicky |
