Jan 7: Distaff (or St. Distaff's) Day in England.

This is when the women return to their work (spinning) after the Christmas festival season. Wild games were once played on this day, with men setting fire to the distaffs of flax or wool, and women dousing the men (and, presumably, the fire) with buckets of water.

CHANT FOR WINDING YARN ON THE NIDDY-NODDY
           (From New England)

        Niddy-noddy, niddy-noddy,
        Two arms, one body.
Here's one, 'tain't one, 'twill be one bye and bye,
Here's two, 'tain't two, 'twill be two bye and bye,
Here's three, 'tain't three, 'twill be three bye and bye,
Here's four, 'tain't four, 'twill be four bye and bye,

And so on until 40 is reached, then you have a skein.   [thanx Sam Hinton]

It's also Christmas Day for those who follow the Orthodox faith.

A picture of a niddy-noddy can be found with a Google search.
