I think Tam Lin (Child #39, "A") takes longer. Partly because I've collated in a couple of verses from "G" (7 & 10) to explain her pregnancy & what's been going on in the woods.

'The Little Jest of Sir Robin Hood' has over 240 verses. I've never sung it all the way through but we did have an idea a few years ago to do a 'serial' version of it between three of us, singing half a dozen verses at each festival we went to then telling the rest in a few sentences..

The version of Gil Morice posted here on the Digital Tradition has 46 4-line verses. Each pair of consecutive lines has 14 syllables and, in many cases, the two lines flow together, so the song is essentially 92 14-syllable lines.

On rare occasions, I sing "The True History of Mary Anne Talbot", a song I wrote that's almost twice as long: 168 14 syllable lines. Unaccompanied, it takes about 17 minutes to sing. If you look here, you will find links to a lead sheet (.pdf format) and corresponding MIDI files.

Years ago a man I played with on a very rare occasion, would do a number titled "Alice's Restauraunt" F**k me. was that a long one. I know absoulutly nothing about who wrote it, and requests to radio stations have been turned down on the grounds, although they have it, it is too long to play. Anyone any info on this number by any chance?

That I sing personally-The flying cloud, although Doing the Manch takes some singing-not a lot of verses but they're long and demanding especially after a few jars which is when the requests tend to come.

I remember a ballad session at Sidmouth when Bob Berry (who runs Chippenham folk festival) tried singing the Flying Cloud, which he'd just learned. He needed some help from the audience.

I used to sing a version of Little Musgrave when I was waiting for buses. It lasted about 11 minutes.

Willie's Lady lasts quite a while, and you have to remember how the spell went in the first place so you can reverse it in the correct order.

Probably "Mattie Groves." Twenty-seven verses of lust, adultery, blood, and gore, learned from an old John Jacob Niles recording (although I don't sing it quite the way he did!). I think "The Flying Cloud" runs a close second, but I've never acually timed them. Close.

A fellow named Chris Rawlings from Montreal put "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to music, memoroized it and performed it from time to time. Lasted about 45 minutes. He recorded it--I think on vinyl--and it took both sides of the record.

I used to be able to do Alices Restaurant but I can't do it now.
Chevy Chase (Northumbrian Border ballad) has about 67 verses but the tune is so boring no-one ever plays it more than twice and I've only ever heard Ray Fisher sing it and then only a couple of verses. I did consider learning it but.......

I worked for two weeks at the old Gaslight Cafe as the emcee for Arlo at the time he was working out "Alice's Restaurant". Heard it--in multiple variations--thrice a night for 12 days. That has held me until now, and figuring that I have only seven or so years left, I think I might last until then without hearing it again.

We once dragged out "What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor" for well over half an hour. With a dozen of us improvising verses and having to think up only one line before our turn came up again, it probably could have kept right on going. Fortunately, after a bit, cooler heads prevailed.

Got pretty damned raunchy toward the end!

There was another time in the early Sixties when I was singing in a coffeehouse and a guy offered me roughly five times what I was making per night at the coffeehouse to come and sing a few songs at a late party. Sure, says I. It turned out to be a gathering of salesmen who were (I think) in town for a convention. The party was in a big room in one of the nicer hotels in downtown Seattle. I sang for a while, then the guy who invited me asked If he could borrow my guitar. What followed was an open ended song made up of whatever limericks anyone could come up with, to the tune of—what?—the Mexican Hat Dance? Anyway, the chorus ran

"Aye aye aye aye
In China they never eat chili.
Let's have another one
Just like the other one,
And waltz me around again, Willie."

Anyway, people tossed in whatever limericks they could think of—and talk about raunchy!!—for also well over a half-hour, until finally the hotel night manager knocked on the door and asked us to keep it down.

The guy paid me in cash—more than he had initially offered—and sent me home in a cab.

I used to sing Tam Lin, which was about 8 minutes. At school, we used to sing "Goodbye horse, goodbye horse, I was saying goodbye to my horse, and as I was saying goodbye to my horse I was saying goodbye to my horse" (tune 'Bless 'em all'.) This is repeated ad lib and to infinity or until someone throws something at the singer.

The late Gordon Hall from Sussex was reknowned for having the longest versions of everything. I once took at tape recorder to him and he announced he was going to sing his version of Lord Bateman. As I had 21 minutes tapetime left, I was not worried .. at first that it ... but as the song progressed I kept glancing at the counter. Finally, 17 and a half minutes and 2 cigarettes later (his cigs, not mine), the song finished. Speach and movement slowly returned. His version of 'The leaves of life' was 'only' 14 minutes.

I suppose the longest I sing these days is the Devon song 'When mother and me joined in' but I've never timed it.

an interesting way to rate them is the size of an MP3 needed to digitize them.

There was a recent posting of many, many versions of Child Ballads in newsgroups, and where a common size was from 3 to 7MB, some ran 12-15-18-or 20MG, and a few...wow! (The list with lengths was also posted)

I don't know many long songs myself. The longest one I know of anybody singing in Scots or English is "Graysteil", which I think Andy Hunter has sung all the way through (probably the first person to do it since the reign of James IV).

The longest song to be orally performed complete by a single performer in any language is probably the Kirghiz epic "Manas" - look it up.

"The Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh" is a mere bagatelle at 45 minutes.

I was once at a singaround at which the 'worst' singer in the group announced that he was going to sing the ballad 'Chevy Chase'. He then proceeded to do so - I'm not sure how long it was because I lapsed into a coma ... several people died ...
Now, I have no basic objection to long songs, per se; I'm sure that there are a few singers around who could tackle 'Chevy Chase' and I'd listen to it with pleasure. Unfortunately, there appear to be far too many people around who learn long songs so that they can monopolise as much of a singaround as possible. Usually, in such cases, the length of the song tends to be inversely proportional to the quality of the singing.
In the example quoted above several people (those who were still standing) walked out - one of the few examples that I can think of where this has happened; it served the selfish git right!

I heard a friend of mine do a longish version of "The Ballad of the Rock Island" and I was suitably impressed. So, I decided to try my hand at this one and developed a compilation of several versions with plenty of my own verbal calisthenics thrown in for good measure.

I play this one bottleneck style and add harmonica for the train whistlin'. I've had an entire bluegrass style band working this one with me in the past. Now that was a great version!

If I hurry I can usually get through it in about 15 minutes but I enjoy stretching it for all it's worth. I love doing this one when I've got a lot of time to kill on stage. ;o) Folks have said that my version has an Arlo air to it.

I've always enjoyed Arlo's work and used to have his version of Alice's restaurant memorized so I could recite it. I've never worked up the guitar part though.

As in songwriter (and teacher) Adam McNaughton's Reader's Digest condensed version of Hamlet that he put together to try and get the little tykes interested in Shakespeare....

It was one of them progressive rock gods. It mighta been Rick Wakeman. They say he was, like, insane, eh? It was the longest flippin' album set ever, but didn't get releesed in stores. Too bad. You could get serious money for that puppy now, I bet.
