Long before they wrote the book referred to above - and it really is at least as great a treasure as previous posts have indicated - Graeme and Robin put together three (I think) slide shows of Robin's pictures illustrating Graeme's recordings of selections of his songs. They take them out when invited and a very fine evening is had by all. It is very well worthwhile club organisers arranging one of these evenings as a brilliant addition to the club programme.

Incidentally, despite being born in Kent and living in Yorkshire (at least historically before Cleveland was thought up), Graham is a dedicated supporter of Durham County Cricket and was a regular attender at the Riverside the last time we saw him.

A lot of Graeme's songs are available from Peter Kennedy's site, but I think there's been some dispute between them about revenue. The quality of the recordings is really rough, and to be frank a fair proportion of the songs aren't that great, but they're still worth hearing for anyone interested in the Cleveland area. One song in particular, the Cleveland Grouse Shoot is fine and funny stuff

The only time I spoke to Graeme he was very pleasant, and Robin's a decent bloke too

I've got it!

I think it's "Horumarye" which is the title of one of the songs. The one I like best is "Yarm Fair", a story of love, swindling and candyfloss. Cracking songwriter - up there with the late lamented Keith Marsden & Cyril Tawney.

I hope some of you, if not all, are familiar with the splendid recording of Graeme's songs by the Wilson Family -- five brothers and a sister. I'm not able to check the spelling of the title right now, but it's something like "Ho-Roo-Ma-Rye.) nor do I know if it has been made available as a CD. It should be, and I'd put it out as a Folk-Legacy release in an instant, if I had the rights. A wonderful album!

Yes the Songscapes book is still available, and not only is it worth every penny for the songs alone but also worth it all over again for the exceptionally fine photographs by Robin Dale. It's a treasure indeed, a real work of art, and anyone interested should snap up a copy while it's still in print. It has been said that Graeme's songs are among the finest written in the modern, living tradition - a statement with which I would heartily agree.

From my own experience of late, Graeme doesn't tend to "sing out" all that often nowadays, and from my recollection rarely ventures outside of his own area, so I'm most surprised to hear of him being sighted (and heard) in, say, Barnsley and Leeds.
Robin, on the other hand, often visits clubs outwith the north-east, and his singing is always justly well applauded (whether he sings Graeme Miles songs or contemporary classics by John Gorka or Bob Dylan). (Could it just be that sightings have been confused between the two gents, I wonder?)

Graeme sang Waiting for the Ferry a few weeks ago at The Grove Leeds.

I wondered initially why he had picked that song. However the atmosphere and imagery he created were wonderful. So wrong again Routledge.

The one time I heard Graeme sing was at Whitby, about 7 years ago, in one of Rod Shearman's evening singarounds at the Sailing Club, and he was singing a Bob Dylan song, but I can't remember which one!

Graeme was also at the carols in Sheffield with Sam and Edna.

There was a full scale article about Graham in the "Living Tradition" Dec 1999 - but unfortunately it is not one of those reproduced on the website.

Grame wrote over 500 hundred songs, his first one around 1950 (!!) He consciously left his work as a museum curator and went to an iron foundry, dredger and stone breaking in order to give himself a background in local industry and to experience the things he might write about.

He wrote the finest two lines in a song that I know. In the "Young Engineer" describing the buiding of the Forth Road Bridge by people from all over the country he finishes the song with the lines:

"When the men from the south and the men from the north
Will meet and complete the bridge over the Forth."

Turned up at Barnsley Folk club Monday night with Sam and Edna from the Leeds Grove ~ I wasnt there due to heavy cold, nor was John Booker who missed our 'gig' at the Shoddy Doggy previous Sat (b***er)so Barnsley lads down to 3 on the night!

Can't remember having heard him sing, met him first time at Holmfirth FF, although I have heard Robin sing on a number of occasions

Graeme must have changed a lot recently if he's singing 'cos I was led to believe he's a bit of a recluse or has been for years. I met him many years ago at Stockton Folk club, not that I suppose he remembers!
His songs and Robin Dale's photographs are in a book called Songscapes, published in 2001 by Red Scarecrow, POBox 539, Billingham,TS23 3XS and if memory serves me right it cost £25 but worth every penny - it doesn't contain all of Graeme's songs just over 50 of them!! I don't think he's published any songs since 1972.
