My group, The Brookwoods, is kicking off a benefit concert for the hurricane victims of Waveland, Mississippi, on Friday,January 26 at the Wink Theater in Dalton Georgia.

Our community has essentially "adopted" a town to concentrate our help efforts and Waveland Mississippi is our town. So far we have generated about $25000 in support along with an enormous outpouring of the business leaders of Dalton, Georgia to send materials, equipment and valuable human resources to aid and assist people of Waveland Mississippi to be retrained for skills related to the carpet and rug industry. Dalton, Georgia is the world's leading manufacturer of carpet and since many of the displaced people of Mississippi have no real opportunity for gainful employment, we are sending the resources to help the people there be able to help themselves with new trades that are much needed in the wake of the hurricane.

Having said all that, we have been asked to open the show along with 3 other acts for an evening of music. We will also close the show with audience singalongs of This Land is Your Land and God BLess the USA. So if anyone is in the area, or if you know anyone from Waveland, Mississippi, mention to them that we are all thinking of them and help is on the way.

I detect a touch of undeclared personal interest here jimmyt.
I wonder, could there be any connection between your own Thong & Mirkin enterprise and the retraining of a Missesyippee Rug Manufacturing base???
Enquiring minds wish to know!

Oh Jimmy, this is wonderful. Sometimes I feel that those communities are just being shoved under the rug, so to speak. Nice to know that at least one community will end up on top of the rugs!

[I really did start that sentence with no pun intended, but ... I can resist anything but temptation.)

Anyway, congratulations and I hope it is wildly successful and very heavily attended, and also that you get lots of gigs from it in the future as a nice fringe benefit. :-)

As much as I am concerned about my own beloved hometown of New Orleans, I am glad to see that the folks in Waveland and the whole Mississippi coast are not being forgotten.

Those coastal communities were much more badly damaged by Katrina's initial impact than was the city of New Orleans, which was flooded only a day or two later when the levees collapsed. If our levees had held, we would have been OK and the world's attention would have been focused on the Mississippi coast, which was totally devastated. However, the way things eventually played out, New Olreans has gotten most of the attention (but still not enough help to actually recover), and places like Waveland are in danger of being forgotten and neglected. So, it's great to see that Dalton GA has adopted one of the worst-hit areas.

Let me get this straight. Your town is planning to go to Waveland and train people in carpetmaking jobs that they will have to move to Georgia to pursue?

no. The Carpet and Rug Institute, an industry representative organisation will be sponsoring the training of people in Mississippi to learn the INSTALLATION of carpet. Carpet installers are always in short supply nationwide and the opportunity to learn a new tradw will do two things: first, provide gainful employment to a lot of folks, 2 provide the citizens of Mississippi with a supply of carpet installers from their own state.

also let me add that in addition to carpet, we are also the country's source of all floor covering, be it hardwood tile, marble, etc. SO installers will also be trained to install vinyl, laminate, hardwood, etc in addition to carpet.

We were the first act to open in this theater in 2002 when we opened for the Platters at the grand opening of the renovated theater. It was our first gig...ever. The group had performed in the sixties and had not been together for 39 years until getting back together for this gig and they needed a bass player, thus my inclusion. We played for 1200 folks that night and to my knowledge no one has filled the house since. We played there once since and had about 400 for another program and it was like playing an empty room. Hope we have a decent audience for this occasion for more than one reason.

Waveland happens to be the town selected by my area fire department
to send a crew of folks to in April. Those who are in the group plan
to help people prepare to move back into their homes. If you can get any insight into how we can best help, let me know! Laurel

I'm sure they'll cherish those old cross-ed rugs that, as trophies, again they'll lay down. You give carpetbaggers a good name!

Keep up the good work! We're all proud of you, Jimmy! Good luck to the show and the whole enterprise!

Here is the info in the fire dept. announcement:

Our destination will be Waveland, Mississippi, on the gulf coast
just east of New Orleans.

This community has been hit very hard and up until now, they have
been spending their entire time just cleaning up to get in a position to "rebuild".

We will be working for Chris Johnson, a city employee, who prior to the disaster was in charge of Parks and Recreation and is now in charge of getting people back into their homes.

Prior to our arrival, Chris will line up each project and have the necessary permits and materials available at the site. All skills
are needed; carpenters, painters, electricians, etc., so everyone
will be kept very busy.......
...The community of Waveland is very excited about the help that they will be receiving. Because they are a small community they have been overlooked by many of the efforts that have been offered. This will be a great opportunity to give help and support.

Is there some sort of an address to give out to any Catters inspired by these efforts to make a donation of money, supplies or materials of sorts to suppliment your good works?

I meant to report back about this benefit concert. It was a smashing success. Had about 700 folks attend, raised over $25000 foor the victoms of Katrina in Waveland, Mississippi, and generally a wonderful evening for all, audience and musicians alike.

Thanks to you and everybody. Waveland is the area which was largely taken down to slabs. The tax base is so destroyed they are pondering merging with the next town, also decimated, just to be able to get some rudimentary kind of government going again. You could pick no better place to lend a hand.

Hope by the time you get there that the building code issues are worked out, lots of building is on hold until some decisions are made. (not the big casinos, they are full steam ahead, but the little businesses and homes )
