I know this thread isn't above the line, but I just checked some online websites for the lyrics to this "Negro" spiritual and I'm not finding the same words that I remember my church choir singing. Here's one version: "SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE A MOTHERLESS CHILD" from « American Negro Spirituals by J. W. Johnson, J. R. Johnson, 1926 Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Sometimes I feel like a motherless child A long ways from home A long ways from home True believer A long ways from home Along ways from home Sometimes I feel like I'm almos' gone Sometimes I feel like I'm almos' gone Sometimes I feel like I'm almos' gone Way up in de heab'nly land Way up in de heab'nly land True believer Way up in de heab'nly land Way up in de heab'nly land Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Sometimes I feel like a motherless child A long ways from home There's praying everywhere Source: Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child **** Then there's this version: Melody - Harry Thacker Burleigh, 191? (1866-1949) Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child A Long Way From Home True Believer A Long Way From Home Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child Sometimes I wish I could fly, Like a bird up in the sky Sometimes I wish I could fly, Like a bird in the sky Little closer to home Motherless children Have a real hard time Motherless children Have a such a real hard time So long so long so long Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child Sometimes I feel Like a motherless child So far away Sometimes I feel Like freedom is near Sometimes I feel Like freedom is near But we're so far away Sometimes I feel Like it's close at hand Sometimes I feel Like the freedom is near But we're so far from home Sometimes, sometimes, Sometimes So far, so far, so far, So far Mama from you, so far Source: Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child version 2 **** But I remember being taught that song this way: Sometimes I feel like a motherless child. Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Sometimes I feel like a motherless child [True believer] * A long way from home. A long way from home Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone. Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone. Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone. [True believer] * A long way from home. A long way from home Sometimes I feel like an eagle in the air Sometimes I feel like an eagle in the air Sometimes I feel like an eagle in the air A long way from home [True believer]* A long way from home * optional phrase. I'm curious which version of this song is most familiar to folks here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: bobad Date: 15 Jan 06 - 05:31 PM Azizi, it's a Leonard Cohen song : Bird on the Wire Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free. Like a worm on a hook, like a knight from some old fashioned book I have saved all my ribbons for thee. If I, if I have been unkind, I hope that you can just let it go by. If I, if I have been untrue I hope you know it was never to you. Like a baby, stillborn, like a beast with his horn I have torn everyone who reached out for me. But I swear by this song and by all that I have done wrong I will make it all up to thee. I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch, he said to me, "You must not ask for so much." And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door, she cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?" Oh like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Azizi Date: 16 Jan 06 - 07:35 AM Bobad, thanks for identifying that Leonard Cohen "Bird on the Wire" song. Guest, thanks for the great list of "Sometimes I feel" songs. Our list of songs and sayings and feelings keeps growing. I'm lovin it. And, speaking of loving, here's another song to add to this list {though it doesn't include the word "sometimes": I FEEL PRETTY I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity Any girl who isn't me tonight. I feel charming, Oh, so charming It's alarming how charming I feel! And so pretty That I hardly can believe I'm real. See the pretty girl in that mirror there: Who can that attractive girl be? Such a pretty face, Such a pretty dress, Such a pretty smile, Such a pretty me! I feel stunning And entrancing, Feel like running and dancing for joy, For I'm loved By a pretty wonderful boy! -snip- [Of course, I'd change "boy" to "man"] Source: The Official West Side Story Lyrics Site |
Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Severn Date: 16 Jan 06 - 09:41 AM Actually, if the police were to shadow a few of these people who constantly sing "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" to themselves and find out where they go when they feel like one, they might finally be able to locate some of those missing children displayed on the milk cartons and junk mail and find out where they've been kept all this time, and lock up a responsible party or two. (Without infringing on the rights of the majority of us who merely love one of the more beautiful Spirituals in both word and tune in existance,of course!) ....And remember, if you see a picture of an adult obviously over 21 in the upper left hand corner of one of those pieces of junk mail who is not accompanied by a juvenile, don't worry, as they're only real estate agents. And despite the coincidince, my friends in real estate, whose real families I've known since childhood, assure me there is no connection whatsoever, even though they'd obviously have more access to places to hide the kids than anyome else. I don't know what they'd be doing with them or training them for anyway, but still I always wondered..... So with my one major try at being a legitimate Conspiricy Theorist being a total failure, you can understand why I leave the political threads to the rest of you. Sometimes I feel...... it's probably better that way..... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Azizi Date: 16 Jan 06 - 06:29 PM Hope you feel better soon, number 6. **** Writing this it just occurs to me that there sure are alot of meanings for the word "feel". Here's what I found online at http://www.answers.com/topic/feel: verb: "feel": To be physically aware of through the senses: experience, have. See knowledge/ignorance. To bring the hands or fingers, for example, into contact with so as to give or receive a physical sensation: finger, handle, palpate, touch. See touch/not touch. To reach about or search blindly or uncertainly: fumble, grabble, grope, poke. See seek/avoid, touch/not touch. To participate in or partake of personally: experience, go through, have, know, meet1 (with), see, suffer, taste (of), undergo. Archaic prove. Idioms: run up against. See participate/abstain. To be intuitively aware of: apprehend, intuit, perceive, sense. Idioms: feel in one's bones, get vibrations. See knowledge/ignorance. To undergo an emotional reaction: experience, have, know, savor, taste. See feelings. To experience or express compassion: ache, commiserate, compassionate, pity, sympathize, yearn. Idioms: be sorry, havetakepity. See pity. To view in a certain way: believe, hold, sense, think. See opinion. -snip- And there's more where these came from... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Jan 06 - 07:59 PM MIDDLE AGE Sometimes I feel; I mostly don't. Mostly I kneel - but sometimes won't. I live the day as best I can, without a thought, without a plan. If there's a chance, I mostly miss. I rarely love, I mainly kiss. With absent mind most of the time, I more or less still find the line. A bumbling fool, one day to next, not even angry - just mildly vexed. Sometimes in time, but mostly late life doesn't rhyme, can't concentrate. No will to fight, no time for fun; from day till night I'm on the run. Little to mark my whole life through. You think you're better? then more fool you! |
Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Jan 06 - 08:14 PM I hasten to add that the above is not autobiographical, but rather a collage. Me, I have a life of course! Every waking moment is spent creatively. My receptors are open to all the stimuli the world has to offer. And I feel great. All the time. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Azizi Date: 17 Jan 06 - 09:36 PM So El Greco, did you write that? Great! But I'm glad that it's not a true description of you- all the time anyway. Sorry, but I can't join you in saying that "Every waking moment is spent creatively. My receptors are open to all the stimuli the world has to offer. And I feel great. All the time." But since you added a smile to the end of your comment, maybe you really didn't mean that you were a superman. All the time. I guess sometimes it's okay to feel human. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Jan 06 - 03:49 AM It's OK to feel humen - precisely my point, Azizi. Even the most alert amongst us have flat moments or even periods. Even Casenova must have kissed absedmindedly (without "love"). No, of course I am not superhuman, except in my dreams - but don't tell Nessie and spoil it for me! :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Jan 06 - 04:59 AM Very likely; but I can't help what thoughts are triggered by a phrase... |
Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Azizi Date: 18 Jan 06 - 07:22 AM When I started this thread, I was thinking of songs or sayings that started with the phrase "Sometimes I feel". But I love how threads evolve, and I love exploring the different meanings words have, and the different ways words are used {maybe those two mean the same thing, but maybe not}. **** I just realized that I did what Peace did even before Peace did it: See Alba's 15 Jan 06 - 10:14 AM "I feel pretty post" and my 16 Jan 06 - 07:35 AM post that includes the song "I feel pretty." I know I read Alba's post, but I forgot that I read it. Oopsie daisy! **** Here's another way the word "feel" is used. "I feel you" {as in "I feel, you man" or "I'm feelin you" or "Are you feelin me on this one?} are sayings that come from hip-hop culture. "Feelin" in these contexts means being empathetic, and understanding the person's point of view, or approving of what the person said, or does. It's interesting to me that "I feel you" took the place of "I hear you" {maybe because Verizon's cell phone company co-opted the saying and changed it to "Can you hear me now?". Though I'm not a fan of hip-hop music, I love the creativity of hip-hop language practices. I'm really feelin it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sometimes I feel From: Azizi Date: 19 Jan 06 - 08:14 PM Yeah but the lingo keeps on changin -which is a sign of its vitality. That's why I keep checkin out Hip-Hop magazines like The Source and Vibe-to see what's new in "languaging" much more [very much more] than for the music. I tend top mix and matching-a little bit of hip-hop, a little bit of 60s soul talk, and mostly mainstream American talk {which has incorporated alot of the other anyway.. It's all good .
