Subject: RE: International lyrics server closed From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Feb 99 - 01:36 PM Well, it's open, Wolfgang, but you can't access lyrics. All you can get to is the titles of songs that used to be available. Darn. It appears that the guy who operates the International Lyrics Server is negotiating with the Copyright Cops for some sort of licensing agreement. I sure hope they come through with an agreement. That would really be a breakthrough. It would be wonderful if we would work out a system that allows free exchange of information but still protects the rights of the songwriters. There oughta be a way - it would be to everyone's advantage. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: International lyrics server closed From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Apr 99 - 09:00 PM Hmmmm. Looks like maybe there are signs of hope. Take a look at the latest message at The International Lyrics Server (click here). Shutting down lyrics sites doesn't help anybody - I hope they've come to a workable compromise. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: International lyrics server closed From: gargoyle Date: 24 Apr 99 - 12:52 AM type in "intellectual property" in the DT database box in the upper right-hand corner of this page and you will get several good leads and a couple hours worth of reading. |

Subject: RE: International lyrics server closed From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 24 Apr 99 - 06:27 AM Tucker. I suspect a LOT of people don't understand copyright. What I understand is that people who create things can be encouraged to do so, if they are encouraged by the incentive of making money. Now if ANYONE who wanted to was free to copy without paying for it, then these people who could, won't create new things. Now this idea of copyright is important in the field of "intellectual properties", or in common terms, books, stories, music, songs, etc. There is the term public domain, where someone is able to use without having to pay the author. Most Western countries subscribe to the idea of copyright because it encourages the free flow of ideas and such. Anyway, copyright is protection for the author, songwriter and playright of their property so they can make money from their ideas and material. Other people may make use of this material, if they pay the originator. This protection has been extended to the authors of computer software and creators of videos with limited success. |
