A big thank you to all the artists who took part in this years fringe! I know some of you meet here on Mudcat, but I will try and get round to thanking you all personally. It will probably take 'till next year to get round you all!! The feedback from committee is that it has been our most successful festival to date, dust will settle and we will have time off before planning the next one!!

Yes thanks to all at the festival for having us back again. Particular thanks must go to that very nice man Kevin Farell who lent us the use of his PA for our spot in the Narrowboat on Sunday. The pub was very busy and noisey so we needed a bit of back up.
Tried buying him a pint as part of thanks to him and he said it was okay and glad to help out. Cheers Kevin we will repay you somehow!

The Boar's Head session was indeed excellent. I was particularly pleased to see an old friend from many years ago, Richard Peach, among the fiddle players.
His virtuoso performance of 'Molly Malone' (instigated by Ian Murfit who also led the vocals) was astonishing.
My own contribution was limited to smiling inanely at everyone and drinking copious amounts of beer. So no change there.

Well Saturday what a day .Lets see if I can remeber it through the haze.
Had lunch outside the Marquue then on to the White Lion for a session with Tim Mundy.
Back to Marquee to catch the end of Tom Doughty and all of Karine Polwart ,SUPERB!
Next Beeze and Wilson in the Narrow boat. Why oh why are they not on the main programme?
A bite to eat then the Boars head for Keith Donnelly, and Kirsty Magee.
Finishing with a great session downstairs.
Not sure how I got home.

So far so good . Friday night and I only got as far as the Boars Head.

Got a bit of Keith Donnelly, some excellent floor spots and of course I have to mention my band (the one Im roadie for) Anne Taggart and Angie Wright. They did two great songs to much applause. Even Keith Donnelly liked them.

Then of course there was someone called Johnathan Kelly suffering badly from laryngitis and no doubt the heat put on a good performance.I would realy liked to have seen more of him in good form.
Loved the Mrs Gilbert song.

Then the heat upstairs got the better of me and down to the roaring session in the bar for more from Taggart and Wright and others; Trevor and Vicki Williams, Rosie, Jim John and Babs, fantastic knot tying by Ken (Father Christmas), and Alison Parker and the Third Man.

Then home to bed.

Back on Saturday for more? OH YES!

You're right. It is a blow, but we're at pains to make it clear that it's not of our doing. The decision was made by the Folk Festival when Nick Burbridge had to pull out.

But, with all due respect to Nick and Dom Collins too Breakfast With Barker is Breakfast with Barker and I'm sure Les will not take offence when I remark that there's no show without Punch.

I spoke to Les when he did a gig for us here at Easter. He too was disappointed not to be here this weekend for what,as you rightly say, has become something of an institution.

We very much hope that 2007 will see a return to the status quo. You may make up your own jokes based on the last sentence.

Well we're not on the actual festival bill, but the Boat Band played last night(Thursday) for the hotpot supper for the boaties who had arrived, so we feel things are now off to a good start. Have a nice weekend everyone.

The loss of the Salt Town Poets Breakfast with--, is a blow, First we lose Les Barker and now the whole thing is a non starter. It means one of the Festival's institutions has dissapeared, I hope not forever????

Better mention the daughter, Jannena ( think I spelt in correctly)who will be dancing at all the celidighs (????) and is a wizz on flute and John "Dixie" Taggart a superb pianist who fiddles with an accordian if you know what I mean.

Do not miss the wild women of folk. For those who do not know they are Taggart and Wright. They are on at the Narrow Boat on Sunday at 3.00 til 4.30.
They are women of an age who should know better.
They should have learned after their appearance last month at the Chester Folk festival but they just never learn.
Watch out they may be next to you in one of the sessions or sing-arounds.
Fortunately they will be easy to spot. Just watch out for the T-Shirts!

Yes sadly as it is not our policy to cancel events unless we absolutely have to. Nick Burbridge is unwell and resourses short for making an alternative happen, unfortunately as the front man for McDermotts 2 Hours they too have had to pull out, but you can still find Dominic and The Salt Town Poets very busy on the Fringe - did I just see Keith Donnelly walk past??? I do believe it was....

Sorry one and all for claiming in another thread that this, the original M-FAB 2006 thread, had somehow mysteriously disappeared.
It hasn't, of course.
But what has disappeared, albeit not mysteriously, is the planned Sunday morning Boar's Head concert with the Salt Town Poets, Nick Burbridge and Dominic Collins.
This is due to circumstances beyond the festival's control.

The Salt Town Poets' contributions to M-FAB 2006 have now been sorted out. Middlewich Open Mike returns to its traditional 5pm spot on Saturday afternoon at the Boar's Head (where the winner of this year's John Brunker Trophy will be announced).
We have a Sunday morning (11am)concert (upstairs at the Boar's Head) with Nick Burbridge and Dominic Collins.
Then, following last year's successful event, we'll be back at the Golden Lion on Sunday evening with 'Poetry & Pints' starting at 8pm, with guests including Richard Faulkner and Mark Bailey (The Trent Vale Poet).
Guest performers are, as always, welcome at both Open Mike Night and 'Poetry & Pints'- and we're talking about performers of all kinds; poets, singers, musicians,jugglers, acrobats (subject to space limitations)rogues, vagabonds, wandering minstrels and ne'er do wells.

I've heard it's first come first served, does that mean if I don't get there early I won't have anywhere to moor? Is there a fee? Is that true? Because I've always enjoyed tyhe atmosphere in the marquee there and think it'd be a shame if they changed it.

Hope they have the regular appearance of Taggart and Wright. A duo not to be missed . Beautiful voices and very funny with it.
Saw them in concert with the Mac Calmams at Loch Lomond the other year when they did a 50 minute spot Great stuff.

I am reliably informed that I had a nice time at Middlewich last year. First one I've ever attended, but I've been to most of them..Work that one out... There are some interesting things happening in the interim, just to keep the fingers supple... I'm reliably informed that I enjoy them too....Come and have some finger suppling fun too!!!!!!

I went to Sidmouth once, My informants had as much fun as me , we think, so we have never been able to verify the fact that any of us had a good time...However the bank manager suggests that I probably did... I set up an informal camp out side sidmouth, near Beer Donkey Sanctuary... Noisy little things at 5am... Not recommended.

When you come to Middlewich, go to Wardle Lock and purchase a cream tea, in aid of charity, and you might feel a bit like your are in Sidmouth... I think I like cream tea Toooo.

Had a great time last year despite ending up at the hospital on saturday night with seriously bad insect bites to my ankles & poor old hubby having to do all of the locks on Heartbreak Hill all on his ownesome as I couldn't walk!

We plan to be out boating at the time of the festival, so might just convince him indoors to moor up for a few days at Middlewich.

Incidentally, since last year's festival the 'Narrowboat' has been re-furbished. This should not cause the sinking feeling in the stomach which such rejigging of pubs brought about at one time. In my opinion it's a lot nicer now than it was before. It's still very session-friendly too.
Of course I can remember when it used to be the 'Crown Hotel'...

Guest Phil, please don't stop posting because of the replies; it's just that Sidmouth is a really raw nerve on here, and some intemperate things have been said by others on both sides of the arguments in the past. Not your fault at all. By the way, Greg is a nice and very funny bloke, and I'm sure he wasn't being nasty, just having a little fun. I don't have an axe to grind as I haven't been to Sidmouth; but I agree that Middlewich last year was superb. Hope to see you there!

I do occasionally view the BBC messageboard but came across mudcat almost by accident.

After the hammering I've received for stating my honest opinion that Middlewich is great but Sidmouth isn't so great anymore I think I'll return to being a silent observer rather than risk having my head shot off when opening my mouth.

Phil Edwards: so sorry if you are not a regular criticiser of Sidmouth. But,just for interest, I see you have never posted to Mudcat before, or at least not under the name of Phil Edwards. Do you perhaps occasionally use other names?

Surely I'm entitled to my opinion that Sidmouth is not worth attending now there are no 'international' dance sides and no arena shows?

I'm not one of those who continually criticise. This is the first time I've expressed an opinion on this site or any other and I've as much right to my views as you have to yours.

Anyway. The reason I posted was primarily to praise Middlewich.

I thoroughly enjoyed 2005 and will be back in 2006.

Sorry if I upset anyone by saying that.

I thought mudcat was an open forum where we could all express our views without a torrent of abuse raining down on us from on high.

Folk fans can be very intolerant at times!

Bit of thread creep here? I could have sworn the thread title said 'Middlewich'??? Webfolk and I are looking forward to Middlewich. We had a great time last year running a session with Trefor and Vicki Williams in the Narrow Boat. Hoping to have a performance slot this time, but we'll still be playing until all hours in the sessions. See you there!

Aha, the first sign of spring. I am sure this is the first GUEST I've seen attacking Sidmouth this year. perhaps a letter to the Guardian is called for.

As Sidmouth is no longer worth attending I tried Middlewich instead last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'll be back again this year.
