Ate Stephanie Piro's wonderful haggis (piped in by Pat Boyle) last Saturday night at an early Burns' Night celebration (The Rabbie Burns Appreciation Society of Farmington, NH).

Tom and I will be on your doorstep on the 28th-- in need of a bed, of course.

Sorry folks- we are presenting our own Burns tribute in Newcastle Maine (7:30), also have to play a welding in the afternoon.
Have a great time- glad to see you are serving haggis. The Maine St Andrews folks are serving the traditional Italian meat balls.. (at noon on the 21st, should anyone ask)

You can, even today, go to Gretna Green, as errant English couples did in days of yore (yore what?) and be married by a "blacksmith" It's like a wedding factory. All they need is an Elvis impersonator (Elvis in a kilt?)
We spoke to a piper there who said he had played for 23 weddings one Saturday in the summer

Count me in, I need something fun in my life at the moment. But I am NOT eating any haggis! Between my neighbor practicing for the Olympic Stair Diving competition and breaking her leg and Clancy having intestinal issues, I'm not having a very good week.

Gott in Himmel! A haggis is just a meatloaf made with oatmeal instead of bread crumbs. I've even had small individual ones made on a grill and served on a bun with ketchup and a pickle.

It's not like it's SEAFOOD, Tami!

And it's not like the vegetarian haggises (haggi?) in plastic that, I've heard, are sold (legally?!?) in Scotland. (I wonder if anyone in Scotland actually BUYS them?)

Alas, I'm going to have to back out (again). I have had the flu since last Friday, and still have a fever and a horrible cough. I need to stick close to home and try to beat this bug (and make sure I don't share it with my friends). I will miss you all but, like Tami, won't miss the haggis. Liver, tongue, kidneys, trips and any of the other offal stuff classified as "organ meats" (which as a child I elegantly referred to as "guts") are on my do not eat list. (And Tami, don't let any of those evil people try to foist it off on my darlin' Clancy.)

Well...the house has not had a proper cleaning since New Year's. But I can guarantee clean sheets and towels. I will try to remember to turn the cushions on the furniture. Look before you leap. And I have a fresh supply of sticky rollers to de-hair anyone who needs it.

I should talk -- until I got the gig last year at the Real Estate Guide, I spent 4 years constantly seeking the new part-time, temp or freelance gig -- because at the time there just weren't any full time jobs available in my field. And the short term ones including part time just don't last. Ach! I'm still tired thinking about it!

I just got permission to read Stacy Lynch's Burns' style poem, "To A Spied-On Library Book" at tonight's gathering. It took the prize bottle of single malt at John Nolan's ""Umpteenth Annual Burns Supper" of the Rabbie Burns Appreciation Society of Farmington, NH a couple weeks ago.

Tom and Linn, Jeri and Tami just left. What a fun night and morning. Kendall sang "Sir Patrick Spence" and "Henry Martin" just like old times.
Mark, a first timer, knew the lyrics and chords to everything - amazing. He has a beautiful voice and a dry sense of humor. Hope he comes back again. Last night I invited him to sign his name in the closet - a tradition explained elsewhere. He went into the closet and made a series of hand gestures, turned to me and said "There. I signed my name." Mark will fit in nicely.
I don't remember all of who sang what. The group included Tom, Linn, Jeri, Tami, Kendall, Jacqui, Eli, Nor, Bobbi and me. Am I missing anyone?
Great food - venison haggis, crab quiche and spinach quiche, baked apples, Waldorf Salad, and lots more. Seamus is making up for lost sleep and I think I will do the same.
No February Song Circle but John Roberts on March 4th.

Really fantastic hearing Kendall singing before breakfast this morning!

AND last night.

Nice bunch of music -- and really nice to have Mark added to the group. New songs!!! Especially liked the Dillon Bustin song about the maritime rescue "Humane Society" on Martha's Vinyard.

What I love about this singaround (besides being with good friends) is being able to sing things that I can't at either our Friday Press Room sessions (too quiet or no chorus, etc.) or at the sea music sessions.

We only learned that it was venison when Kendall refused to eat it unless I read out the Ingredient Statement. No entrails or kidneys or guts or...just venison and oatmeal. Nothing like the homemade haggis I have enjoyed. The kind that bursts open at the touch of a knife.

Charlie, Mark and his wife have been regulars (as listeners) at The Press Room Friday sessions for about a year. Just discovered recently that he has a wonderful voice, strong grounding in the tradition and knows a lot of songs. He thinks his repertoire is too quiet for the Friday melee, but we're trying to get him to the monthly sea music singarounds, too.

Charmion almost made a non-guts haggis for our little Burns night dinner, but we opted for leg of lamb instead. We didn't have too much singing, since most of our guests aren't musical, but one of my friends from work who used to be an opera singer gave us a few Scottish songs, and Charmion did a few tunes on the mandolin.

Where did you get the casing for the haggis?

Re: Haggis Casings -- I suppose you could a nice German blood sausage from Usinger's, scrape out the blood sausage and chunks of tongue, etc. (fry up with eggs -- yum!) and insert yer haggis.

At the Burns' night celebration we usually are a part of, the haggis is served in a pastry crust -- sort of haggis Wellington without the pate
