Can anyone tell me where I could purchase a video or dvd of the documentry called "Mise Eire", by Sean O'Riada. I have found the cd online but would love to view the documentry again, I saw it some years ago while visiting Ireland on holiday and it made a deep impression. Thanks for any help - regards - jimmy

Jimmy – You could try contacting the Irish Traditional Music Archive, whose website is www.itma.ie    I couldn't get the big bad blue clickifier to work, so if the link fails, just type in the URL www.itma.ie

The curator who runs the Archive is very knowledgeable about resources that touch on anything with trad music content, and if he doesn't know, he may be able to put you onto someone who does. There's bound to be a copy floating around Dublin SOMEwhere.

O'Riada was also connected with University College Cork, so someone in their music department library may be able to help you (Music Department, UCC, Sunday's Well Road, Cork, Ireland).

Here's some bumf from ITMA's website:

WAYS TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE ARCHIVE
To make contact with the Irish Traditional Music Archive, you can
•        Visit the Archive at its premises at 63 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, from 10-1 pm and 2-5 pm, Monday to Friday inclusive, throughout the year. We are closed only on Irish bank holidays and from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day inclusive.
A visit is naturally the best option for benefiting from our collections and information resources. An appointment is not necessary, but if you have special requirements or wish to talk to a particular member of staff it is advisable to phone before travelling.
•        Write to the Archive at 63 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. We try to answer brief reasonable questions if we can, but like every other library or archive we do not have the resources to read books for you or do your research for you.
•        Fax the Archive at +353-1-6624585.
•        Phone the Archive at +353-1-6619699. Again we will try to answer brief reasonable questions if we can.
•        E-mail the Archive at info@itma.ie

While I think of it: the archive is due to move soon - but only across the square! So don't panic if its gone when you get to No. 63!

Regards

The move sounds like a much-deserved step upwards. This from the website:

"The Irish Traditional Music Archive is moving to new premises in 2006 in order to improve and expand its public services and archival facilities.

It has been allocated no 73 Merrion Square, a 200-year-old listed heritage building ten doors from its present premises in the centre of Georgian Dublin, by the Office of Public Works which is responsible for Government and historic buildings in the Republic of Ireland. The OPW is currently carrying out high-grade conservation and restoration works on the building, and fitting it out to the requirements of the Archive.

When the work is finished, which is expected to be within the next few weeks, the Archive will be moving its many large collections to the new premises and setting up permanent home there. This will necessarily entail a period of closure, which will be kept as brief as possible. Advance notice of the closure will be given as soon as a completion date for the building works is known.

For further information check this website for updates or ring the Archive at +353-1-6619699."

Just thought I'd mention that the movie was made by George Morrison, who also made Saoirse. Sean O'Riada did the score. The score is available from Amazon and other sources. I have not been able to find a source for the movie yet.

cujimmy, Mudcatters supplied me with both the video and the DVD and I'd be happy to pass on the favour while you're waiting for that Gael Linn re-release. I could send a VHS now - the quality's not great, but you can follow it OK. Or I could get you a copy of the DVD, but that might take a few days as I don't have a DVD writer. Anyway, send me a pm if interested. I'm in the UK.

I like that handle, by the way.

DVDs have been published of Mise Éire and Saoirse?, two historical films for which Seán Ó Riada wrote the score. There is also a new CD of the full Mise Éire score, while a CD is included with Saoirse? DVD. These items may be purchased on-line at www.gael-linn.ie
