"You Raise Me Up

Started it's life as a slow air with fragments of a familiar Irish tune weaving its way into the melody. We tried to banish the piece but it would not go away. Maybe it wanted a different life-form…and so, we decided to pursue the idea of adding lyrics and asked Irish writer Brendan Graham to listen to it. His books "The Whitest Flower" and "The Element of Fire" - two best-selling novels about the life of Ellen Rua O' Malley during the Irish famine, had inspired us strongly. He immediately began to "hear a story" in the melody and by that same evening had shaped the first draft of You raise me up. The unaccompanied violin opening is Fionnuala's first and untouched guide recording for the original demo, while Uilleann pipes' grand master, Liam O Flynn carries the tune through its middle course. The soulful singing of Brian Kennedy and Tracey Campbell-Nation, together with the London Community Gospel Choir and Irish choral group, Anúna, gives full expression to the deep spiritual longing within the lyric.

Lyrics by Brendan Graham | Music by Rolf Lovland

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... to more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... to more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
And I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... to more than I can be.
You raise me up... to more than I can be.

Joe,

There is a beaut rendition by the Keane brothers on their 2002 album on Circin Rua Records: 'Citizens Keane'. The lead singer on 'You Raise Me Up' is Matt Keane. Their credit is as Eric gives above: Brendan Graham/Rolf Lovland (Lovland Rolf/Peer Music (UK) Ltd). The album is still available through Sean Keane's website: Click Here. It is a very enjoyable album which is worth the price alone for Sean's lovely recording of Alan Reid's 'The pleasure will be mine'.

Does any 'Catter know whether Matt Keane has released any albums under his own name? He has a fine voice.

--Stewie.

I went to a funeral last night and they played a Josh Groban recording at the end. I think these may be the lyrics, but I haven't been able to confirm it yet, and I haven't completely decided whether I should like the song or not. I generally don't like recorded music at funerals, that's for sure.

Could it be You raise me up? I was asked about this a few weeks ago by a niece [was it a hymn or had somebody written it?]. She played me a version by Westlife but I had never heard it before so had to do a search - this is what I found:
"You Raise Me Up" is a popular song in the inspirational mold, written by Brendan Graham (lyrics) and Secret Garden's Rolf Løvland (melody). The song has now been recorded more than 125 times around the world in different languages. Løvland approached Graham to write the lyrics to his melody, after reading songwriter Graham's epic first novel - The Whitest Flower(Harper Collins)

The song, which is said to be very similar to traditional Irish folk music, was originally just instrumental before Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham put words to it. It was originally recorded by Irish singer Brian Kennedy on the 2001 album Once in a Red Moon and sold well in both Ireland and Norway. The song was also commonly used for 9/11 attack commemorations even though it had not been released in America.

It was subsequently recorded by Daniel O'Donnell in 2003 and was a hit throughout Ireland and the UK. Later in 2003, after hearing Brian Kennedy's original version, American Josh Groban recorded the song which proved very popular in the US. His version made it to the top of the Billboard AC Charts and remained there for 6 weeks. Josh Groban also performed it at Superbowl 2004, in a special NASA commemoration for the crew of the space shuttle Columbia disaster. A special surprise performance by Groban, for Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday, also gave You Raise Me Up, massive international prominence. The Josh Groban recording also was nominated for a 2005 Grammy award.
And for good measure - ecret Garden won the Eurovision song contest around 1995 [though not with this song].

Eric

Here you go!
UP WHERE WE BELONG
Will Jennings, Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world, few hearts survive
All I know is the way i feel
When it's real, I keep it alive

The road is long, there are mountains in your way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the world
We know, up where the clear wind blow

Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives, loking behind

All we have is here and now
All our life, out there to find

The road is long, there are mountains in our way,
But we climb them a step ev'ry day

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the world
We know, up where the clear winds blow

Time goes by, no time to cry, life's you and I
A live today

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the wolrd
We know, where the clear winds blow

Joe Cocker and Jeniffer Warnes

You Lift Me Up listen
Words & Music by Chris Eaton and Cindy Morgan

Climbing on a cloud
Dancing on a day dream
I don't have a doubt
Just how good this life can be
You lift me up

Running in the rain
Singing in the sunshine
Telling all the world
Why I'm so in love with life
You lift me up

Chorus
You lift me up
And I'm touching the blue sky
You lift me up
I'm on top of the world
You lift me up
I'm getting closer to heaven
In every little thing I love
You lift me up
Headed for the stars
Riding on a moon beam
Taking me so far
Farther than I've ever been
You lift me up

Repeat Chorus

And it's so crystal clear
I'm in love
All I'll ever want
All I'll ever need
Is right here

Repeat Chorus

You can hear it here.

I'm guessing it's this one because it's catchy as a sonuvagun. Google
