Some of the finest versions of one or two of Memphis Minnie's songs - almost up to the level of the originals - were by the great British blues singer Jo-Ann Kelly. I saw her in London in the late '60s many times. She had a superb voice and was a good slide guitar player. Sister to the blues musician Dave Kelly. Alas, Jo-Ann dies from a brain tumour in, I think, 1987. A great loss.

I've recently noticed a MEMPHIS MINNIE Tribute CD issued in 2012 by
STONY PLAIN (Canada) SPCD 1358 "....First Came Memphis Minnie".
Produced by Maria Muldaur. Performances by Maria Muldaur, ROry Block,
Ruthie Foster, Bonnie Raitt, Phoebe Snow, Koko Taylor, and accompanying musicians.
TRACKS:

1.Me And My Chauffeur Blues   3:13
    by Maria Muldaur/Roy Rogers/Roly Salley
2.Ain't Nothin' In Ramblin'   3:43
    by Bonnie Raitt/Steve Freund
3 I'm Goin' Back Home         2:57
    by Maria Muldaur/Alvin Youngblood Hart
4.I'm Sailin'                3:44
    by Maria Muldaur
5.When You Love Me            3:20
    by Rory Block
6.Long As I Can See You Smile 2:48
    by Maria Muldaur/Del Rey/Steve James
7.Lookin' The World Over      2:49
    by Maria Muldaur
8.In My Girlish Days          4:48
    by Phoebe Snow
9.She Put Me Outdoors         3:04
    by Maria Muldaur/Del Rey/Steve James
10.Keep Your Big Mouth Closed 3:14
    by Ruthie Foster, Steve Freund
11.Tricks Ain't Walkin'       4:33
    by Maria Muldaur/Del Rey/Steve James
12.Crazy Cryin' Blues          3:05
    by Maria Muldaur/Alvin Youngblood Hart
13.Black Rat Swing             5:08
    by Koko Taylor

Anyone know this recording ? Please let us know
what you think of the performances and if the disc is
worth acquiring???
Much as I like the work of Maria Muldaur, I think the only white person I've heard who captured the essence of African-American
blues VOCAL performance (particularly Memphis Minnie) was Jo Ann Kelly. The instrumental work of many blues revival performers of
all ethnicities is equal.
Other opinions welcome!
Best wishes, Thomas.

You might try Camsco. I think that might be where I bought my Memphis Minnie CD.

Typing "Memphis Minnie" into Amazon.com gave me 43 CD entries (including 5CD box set 1929-37", $26+postage). Amazon.co.uk gives   entries too, including the box set. So there are two sources. (All published sides also available as box set).
