Happy Birthday!

Paddy Tunney

was born

January 28, 1921
(d. Dec 6, 2002)

One of the legendary voices in traditional Irish music, Tunney was a seminal figure in traditional singing and influenced a host of performers. He had a unique and highly-decorated style of singing, acquired from his mother, Brigid. Ewan McColl described him as "the greatest lyrical folk singer in the English language." Born in Glasgow, he returned as a child to the family home in Co. Fermanagh on the borders of the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. In 1943 he was imprisoned for seven years in Belfast for IRA activities.    [thanx Ramblinghouse]

Yes, Sir Jimmy. (d. 2000)

A probably apochryphal, but still "true" story:

The frugal Mr Shand habitually booked his touring band into modest Bed & Breakfasts, always specifying that honey be provided at breakfast. On one occasion his parsimony was matched by a landlady who provided a single tiny portion in one of those little plastic containers. "Ah, Mrs McTaggart," said the great man, inspecting the item with exaggerated interest. "I see you keep a bee.")

Paddy Tunney's fine solo recording on Folk-Legacy is now available as a compact disc. It was recorded in Ireland by Diane Hamilton back in the early 60s.

Thanks Sandy, I'll order a copy.
(For Diane Hamilton, read Diane Guggenheim: see Liam Clancy's "Memoirs of an Irish Troubadour").

Good idea. I'll get one, too. Is Diane Hamilton the one that did her thesis collecting him on the Lark in the Morning LP (and other amazing Irish still-folk singers)? Or the one that wrote Mythology?

Paddy Tunney once told me that Folk Legacy was his favourite recording.
