Subject: BS 'Mother of all BS threads'??
From: Anonny Mouse
Date: 30 Jan 06 - 05:03 PM

Sorry to bring this up, but try as I might, my computer simply times out on this "Mother" thread...and I have DSL/broadband. I can't imagine 10k posts to ANYTHING, so I'm making assumptions that it really has nothing to do with much of anything-except posting.

I'm a "noob" here-and I don't have RoadRunner or something that won't stall my laptop. Somebody wanna tell me what that thread is all about (if it's about ANYTHING?). It just sits out there beckoning like the forbidden fruit which I cannot take a bite of. Thanks in advance for any more clarity.

'nony -

If you click the "number of posts" to the right of the thread title, you'll get only the first 50 posts, so that much of it will download fairly quickly. From there, you can "page through" taking 50 posts at a time.

If you click the little "d" to the right of the number of posts, it will give you only the last 50 posts in descending order (last post at the top), so if you've followed a thread it's the quickest way to see what's been posted since you last looked.

In most threads, it's a good idea to actually read what's been posted before adding your own, but in that thread the topic(s) drift enough that the last few (or few hundred) will give you all you need to know (or so I'm told).

John

The thread is an accumulation of conversations that would have otherwise started a whole bunch of little short-lived threads. It is a point of pride that it has run as long as it has, but with the crash a while back the beginning is scrambled so it makes less sense than usual. It was started by Khandu several years ago.

Don't try to load the entire thing. Instead of clicking on the thread title, click on the number to the right and you'll get the thread arranged in clumps of 50. Click on the "d" beside that number (what most of us do unless the 'Cat isn't loading properly) and you'll get it in descending order, most recent at the top.

There is a lot of witty nonsense, a lot of interesting links, and a lot of running gags. If you read along for a while you'll catch on.

Clicking on the little "d" will eventually load it, if anything can be loaded that is. I've had one or two item threads take minutes to load, and had Mother load in a few seconds. I'm on broadband at work and at home.

For whatever it's worth, I've taken to running a "ping -t www.mudcat.org" from the "RUN" command before even attempting to access Mudcat. If that works, I'll try loading the 'Cat.

It was started as a joke. The idea was as Stilly describes. It succeeded beyond its wildest dreams. For awhile it attracted a lot of silly people and generated some very funny stuff. Eventually it ended up as sort of a private club for about 7 or so people who became addicted to it on a daily basis. Thus it endures.

It has less charisma than William Shatner, but more than Jerry Lewis. It is the world's longest running joke.

Now you're trying to temp long-thread wannabe immitators, Little Hawk. And dragging Shatner in, do you want to scare the lad?

Another tip:   As Stilly says, ". . . with the crash a while back the beginning is scrambled so it makes less sense than usual." This holds true for a lot of the threads that were there before the crash.   The posts are out of sequence. If you try to read them in the normal order, it can be kind of confusing, because answers come before questions, that sort of thing.

There is a way to put them into the correct sequence. Go to the very tippy-top of the page. Under "The Mudcat Café" mast head (I guess that's what you'd call it), there are four links. Click on the one that says "Printer Friendly," then wait for a moment or two. The thread will reappear. It will look a little different, but everything should be in its original order. You don't have to print it out, you can just read it as is on the screen.

There are a heap of older threads (mostly scrambled) that are really worth reading.

Happy hunting!

Don Firth

ExCYOOOOZE meee, Little Hack, but as far as Charisma, Karma, Cardiopulmonary Endurance and Cardamom Flavor, the MOAB has Shat-wit eating dust with his wee little doors blown off. And you KNOW this perfectly well. You're just being wormoid about it.

Fah! The MOABS is a pale and feeble attempt to rival the grandeur that is Shatner. It maunders on and on pointlessly, consuming bandwidth to no useful purpose. It is a gulag, a cesspool, a finrag, a slapwilly, a diddlesworth on the nose of a nightmare.

MOAB has great HTML tricks to distract readers from Shatner!

...all of which places it several notches of excellence above what you so laughingly refer to as grandeur. Linking "grandeur" with Shatwit is like linking "empathy" with Martin Gibson or "insight" with W. Puhleeze, my good man. Stick to metaphysics.

Humph. Claptrap. Stuff and nonsense. Balderdash. Horse puckey. Utter twaddle. Shatner will outlive the MOAB in the hearts and minds of all truly sentient beings.

William Shatner is dead. That which continues and proclaims itself to be William Shatner is actually the re-animated body of what was a fine actor. Yes -- "William Shatner" is actually a zombie!! He was transformed into that by a Mama-loi when he stumbled into her voodoo ceremonies in a basement on Bloor Street in 1997. Feed him salt and watch him go to his eternal rest.

I believe we who have posted to MOAB can be of great help to Anonny by very simple doing the following. Repost our first 50-100 posts to MOAB here on this thread!! My GAWD, that is an excellent idea!!
That way, Anonny, and others, could easily catch the seeds that eventually blossomed into the intimidating beautiful hulk that MOAB is today!!!

Okay...here is the first post of MOAB. (Note: Included in brown font is a "postscript" added to the opening post by Joe Offer, thus giving MOAB the official blessing from the Mudcat Hierarchy!!!)

From: khandu

Another brainstorm of mine, inspired by Tweed, Spaw, Carol the Sailor and their ilk.

We can save time which we spend searching through all the BS threads very easily. Henceforth, post all BS here in this thread. Soon there will be only one BS thread. We won't have to look for particular threads as this will be the only one and it will contain all the BS we have to offer.

My Gawd!! Why has this not been thought of earlier? It is so obvious!

I swear, sometimes I even amaze myself!

Once again, for those of you who are slow in understanding...hear me, Tweed! Post all BS in this thread from now on!

Pene Azul and Joe Offer will thank me for making their job so much easier! My fellow 'Catters will also thank me when they realize the time my idea will save them! Maybe this will finally get me the coveted "Time/Life Man of the Year"!!

I swear, sometimes I even blow my own mind!!

King khandu

Thank you, khandu. I worship at your feet.

Between the Mudcat's current instability and some of my own connectivity problems I could rarely get the MOAB to load even in descending order with some browsers. I've had more success using Opera. It doesn't necessarilly load any quicker, it just doesn't seem to time-out as quickly.

Due to my own current instability, I have had no trouble getting loaded in any order. Sometimes, after getting fully loaded, I break into an unreasonable facsimile of Opera until the neighbors force a time-out upon me.

BeeDub...where is your first 50-100 posts??

The check is still being held as evidence in an on going investigation. Therefore, I cannot at this time return the money as the check was never cashed. However, even if the check had been cashed & I had the money in my hand, I would not feel any leanings toward returning it to you as it was freely given, without compulsion or coercion, and is considered a gift.

We at the Etereal Kingdom of Mississippi glady receive such gifts & would be willing to take more off your hands in order that you may be blessed as it is more blessed to give than receive. Sure, it is a sacrifice but that is just the kind of people we are.

No! NO No no! Ours isn't THAT kind of BS! It doesn't get people killed! It entertains and enlightens and confuses (well, it certainly serves as a barrier to various folks who sometimes come along and want to tell us what to do). Don't know what happened to the first few hundred. When I load chronologically on the numbers (but not the "d"), I see MMario's name, and below it that Poopcrapslinger name and I know 1) Little Hawk has been here and 2) it's still out of order.

BWL, you have a garden? My yard is so dry I count myself fortunate to find a single stalk of garlic popping up near the old compost pile. Hopefully it will grow and the dogs won't gnaw it to the ground post haste upon finding it.
