A little bit of local weirdness. After all of the black giggles it gave us in the office yesterday, I think it's probably fertile ground for song challenge. So...CHALLENGE!

Fast-food franchise owner dies on I-90

By Peyton Whitely

Seattle Times Eastside bureau

A man who died along Interstate 90 near North Bend after being struck by an oncoming pickup Wednesday was a well-known Ellensburg businessman, according to State Patrol reports.

The victim was identified by the Patrol as Brett Arnes, 34. Arnes and his wife own McDonald's restaurants in Ellensburg, Ephrata and Quincy, Grant County.

He was driving west about 4 a.m. when his pickup cut across the median barrier and crossed three eastbound lanes before coming to rest on a guardrail along the eastbound lanes, the Patrol reported.

Arnes then got out of his truck, removed his clothes and stood in the middle of the eastbound lanes, the Patrol said.

A 60-year-old man driving a 1995 Ford pickup then struck Arnes. The driver told the State Patrol that when he saw the naked man standing in the dark in the lane in front of his truck, he swerved to avoid him, but the man seemed to jump in front of his truck. Arnes died at the scene.

Trooper Kelly Spangler, Patrol public-information officer, said investigators have no idea why Arnes removed his clothing.

Adding to the mystery, a dead dog was found near the truck. The dog's carcass straddled two eastbound lanes, Spangler said. Authorities did not know if the dog belonged to Arnes.

Spangler said no charges were pending against the driver of the Ford pickup, Erick Hanson of Wilkeson, Pierce County, who was on his way to work. Hanson was not injured but was very upset, she said.

Arnes had been a franchise-holder since 1996, said McDonald's spokeswoman Cheryl Lewis in Kirkland.

Homeward Bound Again

I'm standing in the east-bound lane
With traffic driving me insane
Ooohooooooo
My pickup's truck's a total wreck,
Lucky I didn't break my neck
But no-one driving through the night
Will stop to see if I'm all right!

Butt naked, I wish I weeeere
Butt naked, I'd cause a stir!
But! It would make 'em talk
But! Think of all the shock!
But! What about Joan Kroc?
But....no-one stops for me....

The traffic is an endless stream
OF SUV's with undimmed beams
Ohh---oooooo
I think I'll open up my shirt
And drop my pants -- it wouldn't hurt
I'll moon these bastards in my pain
Before they make me go insaaane!

Butt naked, I wish I weeeere
Butt naked, I'd cause a stir!
But! It would make 'em talk
But! Think of all the shock!
But! What about Joan Kroc?
But....no-one stops for me....

The night is getting mighty cold
And still the endless traffic rolls
Hmmmm-mmmmm
And here's a likely laddy buck
In an ancient 1-ton pick-up truck
I'll jump right out and make him stop
I need someone to call a cop!

Butt naked, it didn't work
Butt naked, that f***ing jerk!
But! No more Ronald gibes
But! No more French-fried vibes!
But! Joan can go catch hives...?
FInally I'm free....
FInally, I'm freee.....

(Fade humming and pickin')

Phew! Strange one, indeed. Good ta see ya around these parts, Jendarlin'!!

I've had it with the Big Macs
Think I'll go insane,
I'm driving up the highway,
Crossing the wrong lanes.

I'll show them all I hate it;
Clothes and all will go
I'll find my own Big Mack truck
Prove that life does suck!

(oh, well, a start, maybe...it's been awhile!)

Who did you say it was brother,
Who was it fell by the way,
When the found the nude on the highway,
Did you hear anyone pray?

CH..
I didn't hear nobody pray, dear brother,
I didn't hear nobody pray,
I saw the wreck on the highway,
But I didn't hear nobody pray.

Brett Arnes was an Ellenberg fellar,
On Interstate 90 one day,
He took off his clothes in the fast lane,
But I didn't hear nobody pray,

CH

Now Brett sold Big Macs for a decade,
'Til his brain cells had melted away,
With holding the fries and the mayo,
And telling folks, 'Have a Nice Day'

CH

Brett was driving back home in the evening.
When he finally flipped so they say,
Crossed three lanes an crashed into the guard-rail
But I didn't hear nobody pray.

CH

He jumped from his car in an instant,
And threw all his clothing away,
Then walked under 'Ric Hanson's Pickup,
But I didn't hear nobody pray

CH

Now the end of the story is tragic,
Brett's passing killed others that day,
A dawg drawn by the smell of the burgers,
Was flattened as well so they say

CH

So come all you fast food aficionados,
Beware lest you go the same way,
If the mad-cows are still in the burgers,
You'll never hear nobody pray

With apologies to Roy Acuff and others.

I just got a call from someone who apparently knows this person quite well, and she simply wanted to file a complaint. She did not threaten, and was quite polite, but she did not like the fact that my site was providing humorous parodies concerning the death of her friend. I tried to explain how this site works, who we are, and what we do as well as the practice of songwriters getting material from current events. She was unmoved and argued that we are making things that are very personal to some, a very impersonal practice. Perhaps she is right, but her final argument was: What if that were someone I knew? I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, cause I think its important artistically and historically.

Just thought I'd pass it along...

Well, thanks, Max. My song was not sensitive, and if I had known the person it would have been a very different song. But I wish to hell she had added some explanation of what happened out there. She might be able to understand how paradoxical, not to say ludicrous it appears.

I am sorry a friend of hers got lost and I applaud her for making her voice heard, which took some effort.

But in the final analysis I think we are all half hero and half laughable Pagliacci; and if we cannot see the humor in all phases of being human, we shouldn't be driving meat-bodies around planet Earth.

I can't give you an explanation of why he chose to do this and that will always be a question to everyone. Perhaps he read some of your creative lyrics and got a great idea. No-one can ever know what goes on in the head of another person, I know that from bitter family experience!
My own, maybe unfortunate, way of dealing with it has always been to look at our human state as being slightly ridiculous. I truly think that the Good Lord has a sense of humour, otherwise he woudn't have made us in the fragile, ungainly form that he did.
I suspect that your friend has been welcomed with smiles, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
Go in peace.

Man laying on I-90 hit by three vehicles

A 34-year-old North Bend man was critically injured early yesterday after lying down on Interstate 90 and being struck by three vehicles, according to the State Patrol.

The incident happened about 6:20 a.m. near the Preston interchange, about 21 miles east of Seattle. Several motorists called 911 to report a pickup being driven erratically along High Point Way, which runs parallel to I-90 on the north side of the freeway, said Trooper Kelly Spangler.

The truck driver crashed into a utility pole and then got out, climbed over a guardrail, went down an embankment and crossed the freeway's westbound lanes, Spangler said. He then crossed the median and lay down in an eastbound lane, where he was hit by the three vehicles, she said.

This website is for people with no imagination. You people have to read the headlines for lyrics. Get a life of your own and quit dragging out a terrible tragity. Have you ever lost someone. If you have you know the grieving process and should realize that the last thing someone needs is to watch or hear there loved ones name or life drug through the dirt. Its a disrespectful and cruel thing. I realize me writing this won't do a damm thing but make you people laugh because your getting a reaction and thats what you want. Just know it is not a good reaction your getting. If you really want to influence go out and write about your own stories, dont take people's lives and make fun, especially when they cant be here to say differently. Get your own material, and leave the dead to rest. Let the families and friends heal, dont cause more pain.

Apologies are all well and good, Amos. (that is, if you've done something that justifies apology) It does get a little tedious when you consider first that EVERYBODY knows somebody, second that Ellensburg/Cle Elum is a small town and everbody 'knows' everyone else, and third that you are apologizing to a person who chooses to express their grief not with the aforementioned friends and family, but in trolling the internet. I'd rather not.

The 'black hole of I-90' is fertile songwriting ground (I know 'bermuda triangle' probably expresses better, but what the hell rhymes with triangle anyway...), but rather than posting here and getting my ass chewed by a guest, I'll save them for the next Camp Runamuck, thanks.

Is not my bracelet my bangle?

What's the angle of thy dangle?
If I chase cows then I wrangle.
Juries hear alibi tangle.

I know its not exactly on topic, but some part of my brain always responds to any rhymeing challenge.

I think ya'll suck, think of something more fun to do. Sad that you all sit here and find things to bitch about, why don't you write songs about things that make people feel better not worse? Personally, I don't think that a naked man committing suicide on the freeway is gods way of being humorous. I think it may be his way of showing that there is a whole lot of pain and suffering in the world. Your way of trying to lighten up the mood does not make it any better. Do you also not realize that humor is not in a person's death, especially one that may have been mentally ill or on drugs? There is usually a reason a person feels so bad that they would even think of doing this. There is no humor is someone else's pain. Not even god would laugh at that. Think of this, if this man's child was to type in their father's name and this site came up, do you think that he would laugh and find the humor?

You're related to TK, right? Spouse or close? I think you will find if you look that no-one was finding things to bitch about on this thread until her complaint.

We also write songs about things that make people feel better, BTW.

I can't speak to the question of your hypothetical child using a browser. But I think his really serious questions would have surfaced well before he came here; and as we've mentioned above, we don't have answers for those question, except that humor sometimes makes things more bearable, not less, depending on your viewpoint.

in July 04, a famous transsexual was brutally attacked at a MacDonald's in Marianna, Fl by one of five men loudly screaming against same-sex marriage. Angela Douglas, 62, who was born male and had sex change su4rgery in the 1970's, said Leroy Mobley struck her in the head and face a dozen times with his fists while dozens of people and workers did nothing, not even call police. Douglas was not badly inmjured, went to police and they dissuaded Douglas from having him arrested, saying the judge wouldn't do anything and refused to record it as a hate crome. All media covered it up. The owners, Abby and John Biggers, refused to do anything about Mobley, became threatening and banned Douglas from the ones they own after Douglas threatened to sue them and MaCDonalds and called a boyucott of MacDonald's on the web. Mother Nature responded, destroying hundreds of MacDonalds from Sept 04 in Florida, other states, and a half mile wide tornado tore up marianna in Spet. 05 and almost hit the police station and where Mobley lives. Douglas was a roick singer-guitarist known as Doug Delain from 57 to 67, raised in, served in the Air Force, knew Hendrix, Arthur lee, Warren Zevon in LA and was with the original Euphoria rock band, began a sex change there in 69, got famous as an alternative press writer, had sex change surgery in 1977 and sdank into war with Hollyewood' dozens of films, Tv are thefts frtom Douglas' published life story, mixed with fiction such as Iron Eagle. It is unfortunate when this happens. One of the Mudcat Tavern threads picked up on an unusual name in an obit to apply to a character and since she had contributed a lot of scholarship on something or other her name easily came to the top in a Google search, and Mudcat with it. I have a whole thread of articles with sometimes uplifting, sometimes informational, many times the really oddball stuff that comes through reading various online papers. I suspect a few of those may have made it into the song challenge domain. Discussing the news is a fact of life anywhere in the world.

A Google search on "Brett Arnes" comes up with a lot of remarks, not just the Mudcat set.

Bizarre behavior foments comment. I suspect that in this instance, the heirs and friends probably need thick skin, because it's going to be talked about. Better to ignore it and let it go away than reviving threads and bringing it back to the top again.

The guy was presumably concussed from the crash, that could make you do anything.

But, there would be a lot less good songs if we all paid due attention to the truth and the subjects' feelings. Scrub Johnnie Cope and Lizzie Borden, and probably the guy who shot Jesse James wasn't a dirty little coward either. Heck, let's ban Shakespeare for libelling Richard III and Macbeth.

Let's be insensitive about somebody else, then. Early last year I was on a bus in Turkey and flipping through a borrowed newspaper came across a story about the proprietor of a clubwear and fetish clothes shop in Kadikoy (a suburb with a thriving alternative culture, across the Bosphorus from Istanbul) who had been found beaten to death. The background was that he'd been in the news a year or so before - for getting a transplant of pig genitals. I have never seen this story reported anywhere else. Somehow I imagine a song in which the pig gets its revenge.
