Subject: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:44 PM Where did all the snow go??? It has only snowed two times this fall/winter season in Pittsburgh, Pa. And both times the snow melted the next day. Has it snowed where you live? [unless you live in some area that never gets snow during this time that is] If it has not snowed, do you think that's because of global warming? And should we be thinking doom and gloom thoughts or what??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Peace Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:45 PM I was just wondering that, myself. I think it went to Florida. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:46 PM It is coming down outside my window as we speak... |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:49 PM Somewhat off topic: I just found out that Public Public schools have a two hour delay on Monday. These delays are usually reserved for snow days. But [though I don't believe anyone is officially saying this]its happening the day after the Steelers play [and win??] the Sueprbowl. I think its because the school district hasn't had any snow days yet this season, so they figured they'd use one for this momentous occasion. Its certainly kinda unusual. Like there being so little snow here so far is unusual. What's up with that??! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Peace Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:50 PM OK, then. The snow is fallin' in Ontario. We have had a whole cumulative total of maybe two inches of the 'fluffy white stuff' since winter started. That's fine with me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: gnu Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:52 PM Sunny, no wind, +10C this afternoon in the Banana Belt of New Brunswick... UNREAL!!! BBQ and beers and tunes. GO GLOBAL WARMING!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Rapparee Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:53 PM What is a Steeler? We have had snow on the ground most of the winter, although at times most of it has melted off. Up in the hills, say around 7,000 feet and higher, there's about 10 feet or more. I'm living at about 5,000 feet and we've had maybe a foot or 18 inches so far, total. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:54 PM oops Public Public Schools is a typo. I guess there are such things as private public schools, but I meant Pittsburgh Public schools. **** Peace, Seriously, has Florida gotten any snow this year or other places that usually doesn't get snow. And haven't I read that it usually snows a lot where you live {in Canada, if I recall}? And Little Hawk: If it's snowing where you are now, has it snowed as much where you are [again in Canada-I believe?] as it usually does? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Susan A-R Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:54 PM I went out in fleece and street shoes last night (Montpelier Vermont in early February???) some folks have made maple syrup, about a month early, and my buddy who runs a cros country ski center and sugaring operation is gloomy, which is mighty rare. Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Peace Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:54 PM S'far's I'm concerned, it will be too soon if I see snow this winter. We've had sone serious falls in the Rockies nearby, but none to speak of in the town. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Sorcha Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:57 PM We have at least had snow in the high country....'might' help the water situation this summer.....darn little here tho. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: artbrooks Date: 04 Feb 06 - 04:57 PM No snow in Albuquerque at all. We don't get much, but there are usually 3 or 4 falls of a couple of inches each and a good snow cap on the Sandia Mountains immediately to our East. But don't worry...King George says there is no such thing as global warming. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: beetle cat Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:00 PM Yeah warm here in Newfoundland too, but we just got two days off university for our first big blizzard of the winter. YAY. mary. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:00 PM Azizi - No. Much less than usual, but we did have one really big storm. You said "It has only snowed two times" where you live. What happened to "twice"? And did you know that they still say "thrice" in Pakistan for "three times"? They got it from old English school texts, I guess. Almost no one says "thrice" in Canada anymore. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:02 PM Really off topic: Rapaire, you were probably being facetious, but in case you or others don't know, here is Official Site of the Pittsburgh Steelers **** Having said that, I'm not a football fan. But one day this past week I even wore a gold and black Steelers tee shirt to work {along with black pants, mind you}. Steelermania is infectious. So let me take this opportunity to say, Go, Steelers, Go. **** I suppose it won't snow in Detroit tomorrow, but if it did, the Steelers used to be used to playing in that kinda weather. And what's that other team's name anyway! {HA!} |

Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: gnu Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:05 PM Azizi... I am in New Brunswick. I forget the year, in the early '90's, but it was right around this time of the year, we had 1.62m of snow in less than 24h. I have seen the same in Decmember and in April. Usually, in February, we have temperatures below -20C and weekly Nor'Easters that would blow the snow up yer ass. I REALLY enjoyed mu BBQ today. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:09 PM Twice. That word does nothing for me. And thrice is even worse Look at what these word rhyme with: mice lice **** Uggh! And then there's ice which is an okay word, but when it comes to winter driving, I actually don't mind the snow. It's the driving on the ice that scares me. So since I'm a drive-around-the-neighborhood kinda driver, and since I have a new job that is challenging me to go to neighborhoods and towns that I never driven to before, I guess I should be glad that there's been so little snow-and so little ice on the streets. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Rapparee Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:20 PM I shall say thrice twice: thrice thrice. That is thrice as nice as twice thrice: twice twice twice. But they both equal the same number. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Peace Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:22 PM "And thrice is even worse Look at what these word rhyme with: mice lice" OK. Mice can be bad, but what's wrong with lice? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:24 PM The last several years the snow has been less and less here. Chicago winters were almost always 35 inches of snow per year---sometimes more -- with huge totals in at least 3 big storms. But now---we've hardly had 6 inches this year in Peru, IL 100 miles S.W. of Chi-town. It's very unreal. What's more, all of the dogs in town here are having terrible gastric problems. And I've heard it is spreading outward to neighboring counties and states. Every canine in this town had to be wormed and re-hydrated. Could this be what global wOrming is all about? Art |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:33 PM Peace. What's wrong with lice????!!!! Besides being yucky and ikky and germy and dirty and Lord knows what all else, you mean? Thank goodness neither my children nor I [how's that for good English?!} have had lice. But I bet you're going to say you have, eh? [how's that for a Canadian expression?] **** Art, I read in a recent thread that you wrote you live in Peru, and I thought you meant the country Peru. Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: bobad Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:40 PM Eastern Ontario is also having an unusually mild and snowless winter this year, we've had more rain than snow and temperatures above freezing for long stretches. There is snow cover throughout but a lot of ice as well due to the rainfall. Have been seeing a lot of deer and wild turkeys gleaning the corn fields. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Feb 06 - 05:46 PM Here at 2,300 feet in the Sierra Foothills, we're lucky to get a storm with two or three inches of snow, maybe once a year. Otherwise, it melts before it hits the ground. We have some magnificent, clear winter days when we can see mountains capped with heavy coats of snow. Tomorrow afternoon, our stretch of Interstate 80 will have chunks of snow all over it, dropped from the vehicles of skiers going "back down the hill." We've had lots of runoff in the rivers, too. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Rapparee Date: 04 Feb 06 - 07:46 PM It's snowing. The grass on the golf course, which was sticking up brown and sere throught a faint dusting of snow, is now covered with the stuff and it's still coming down. I went out this morning and went to the store. I'm not going out tonight. The roads are quickly getting slick and icy and right now there's no reason to leave the house. I shall continue working on the repainted rooms, and later I'll make myself a bourbon and branch before toddling off to bed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Bobert Date: 04 Feb 06 - 08:01 PM Now you gone and done it, MiziAzizi!!! (Better go gas up the tractor, Bobert...) Well, I, fir one, was much liking this somewhat snowless winter... Yeah we've had a couple 4 inchers but nuthin' bad but even they take about 3 hours work on the tractor to clear out my sraight down/straight up, 3/10 miles drive way... But now that MizaAzizi has awakened the snow gods, I reckon the rst of the winter will, ahhhh, winter, snow, ice...... Brrrrrrrr!!!! Thanks, Miz.... Bob,ob,ob,ob,ob,obert, brrrrrrrrr....... |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 08:15 PM Hey Bobert, Awakening the snow gods-is that like burnin bread? Sorry. I didn't mean to do it. So don't blame me if it snows and snows and snows up a storm. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Peace Date: 04 Feb 06 - 08:17 PM Well, if the snow keeps up it won't come down. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: ragdall Date: 04 Feb 06 - 08:46 PM We have snow. Not a lot, but it's been covering the ugliness since early January. We've even had to run the snowblower three times in the past two weeks to keep the driveway useable. I enjoy being able to step out the door, click the boots into the bindings on my skis and go out for a little loop through the nearby greenbelt, which is now a whitebelt. We do have much less snow than we used to have, though. We've had 13 to 16 feet fall during a winter. I couldn't find any statistics online about the snowfall to date, this winter. I'm guessing it's been less than 4 feet. rags |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 04 Feb 06 - 08:47 PM ok. so don't blame me if it snows down a storm. blame the snow gods whoever they may be. **** Btw- I tried to find reference on the Internet that would define "burnin bread" for those who are unfamiliar with the saying. But I've not had any luck so far. I've heard the sayin "Don't burn bread on me" among urban Black youth/adultsat least since the 1990s . When someone talks about something bad that might happen to a person in the future, the first person might say "Don't burn bread on me". For instance, I might say to a teen "If you keep hangin around that wild crowd, you're going to land up in jail". The teen could say to his friend "She just burnt bread on me". The implication is that there is power in words, Just the act of verbalizing something bad might cause it to happen. I guess the bread that was burned was bread made out of flour and not "bread"=money. However, IMO, this is just an excuse for accepting personal responsibility for the consequences of one's actions. BUT- if it snows where you're living, don't blame me-cause I ain't burned no bread on you. |

From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Feb 06 - 05:35 AM We in the UK were promised snow and frost and freezing weather.... it was forecast as the coldest winter on record.... still waiting for it! OK, I admit, it has been pretty chilly... I even wore socks in the house the other day, but we've had no snow to speak of, and very little rain. Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 05 Feb 06 - 08:41 AM Well I woke up this mornin to a very very light dusting of snow in Pittsburgh. Just a teeny bit of white powder on the cars, and an even smaller amount on the grass. Plus it rainy/snowing as I type this but it will amount to nothing-I think. But in Detroit-site of the Superbowl XL, , it's a different story. Check this out: "DETROIT (Feb. 4, 2006) -- With strong wind and 4 to 7 inches of snow forecast, snow removal crews girded for a winter storm as thousands of fans headed downtown on Super Bowl eve... The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Detroit through noon Feb. 5, predicting 5 to 8 inches of snow before the storm passes. The heaviest amounts were to fall tonight, with gusts up to 40 mph. "I would definitely say that road conditions are going to deteriorate quickly," said Karen Kahl, a meteorologist with the weather service office in suburban Oakland County. The snow comes after the third-warmest January on record in Detroit, with high temperatures in the 40s most of the month..." -snip- Source: http://www.superbowl.com/news/story/9208803 Well, it's not my fault. Blame it on those snow gods that Bobert wrote about earlier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 05 Feb 06 - 08:45 AM Hey Bobert, is Loki one of the snow gods you mentioned? Maybe. Maybe not. See this info on Loki: "Loki is one of the major deities in the Norse pantheon. He is a son of the giant Farbauti ("cruel striker") and the giantess Laufey. He is regarded as one of Aesir, but is on occasion their enemy. He is connected with fire and magic, and can assume many different shapes (horse, falcon, fly). He is crafty and malicious, but is also heroic: in that aspect he can be compared with the trickster from North American myths. The ambivalent god grows progressively more unpleasent, and is directly responsible for the death of Balder, the god of light" -snip- For more information on Loki, click: http://www.pantheon.org/articles/l/loki.html |
Subject: RE: BS: Where did all the snow go? From: Azizi Date: 05 Feb 06 - 08:57 AM BTW, in some ways the Norse god Loki sounds like the West African/Caribbean/South American trickster god Esu {Elegba; Eleggua; Papa Legba} who originated among the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria. See this information on Esu: "Eleggua The owner of the roads and opportunities. He is the messenger between human beings and the other orishas. He is always the first one to be honored during any ceremony because without his approval, nothing can be accomplished. Also a healer and master magician, he can be extremely generous as well as cruel. That's why he is associated with the devil in the Brazilian Candomble tradition. However, in the Yoruba tradition he is not seen as evil. His tricks are simply opportunities to learn lessons. He is the trickster. In Santeria, Eleggua is the one who protects the home against dangers. Most santeros keep him in the house close to the front door. They give him offerings every Monday and on the third day of the month. His favorite gifts are candies, candles, toys, rum and cigars." -snip- Source: http://www.afrikaworld.net/afrel/sevenorishas.htm |

Snow, you yahoos! Usually, it's been 3-4" and lasted a couple of days. I don't mind not shovelling or not driving in it or not worrying about the roof caving in, but I worry that the lack of snow cover will cause problems in the long run. For one thing, the amount of snow and the cold help determine how many mosquito eggs survive to hatch in spring, and there's probably other things that are either kept alive or killed by an insulating blanket of snow or a solid freeze. I know I'm having abandonment issues because the birds don't seem to come to my feeder anymore. Speaking of which: Here's another new African proverb I just made up {well, actually I admit that I'm paraphrasing the Ghanaian Sankofa proverb}: "It is never to late to give credit where credit is due."
