The snow was pretty while it was falling and accumulating. I figured it wouldn't stay for long, so I took my camera and tripod out on my balcony around 2 AM on Sunday and took some photos. You can see them here.

The 8-10 inches of snow here didn't stay for long. It melted and shrunk. Roads were cleared rapidly. Winds knocked the snow off of the power lines and tree limbs. It was rather disappointing.

We're sufferin' here. The temperature just dropped to about 9 below C. No sign of snow. Just thought I'd mention that. Again.

I'm considering wearing shorts tomorrow. May doff the spring jacket.

In my driveways (two driveways between the houses). Two to almost five feet where it drifted. Over three hours of snowblowing and shovelling. But, it's purdy.

Fionn, where are ye roughly?<

North/central Jersey, close to Staten Island (much to my chagrin :P). Barring New England, the area which got hit hardest by the blizzard.

Don't get me wrong, I love snow---provided it falls in aesthetic, and non-lethal amounts.

After the last 24 hours, I am looking forward to crocuses and robins. (But will still probably photograph a few snowscapes while the stuff's still white and virginal...)

It did indeed.

Very pretty; would be even prettier if I'd stayed the (expletive) home. :P

Still nothing here... got 6 different flowers blooming in the garden (OK so I bought some primroses and planted them Saturday) but there are many little bulb spikes showing and new leaf buds formed..... still no snow. Bet you anything you like, if we put Limpit's sledge out for firewood, we'll get 8 inches that will last until May.

Well, it *is* February. What the **** do you expect?

The new Head Honcho in Canada is claiming that the Northwest Passage is Canadian because Canadian islands and land border it on both sides. The US is saying that it's an international waterway.

This is important, because the Passage could be ice-free all year around in 10 years. As a shipping route it could save LOTS of money for shippers, since much traffic could avoid the Panama canal (think of a Europe to Japan route, for instance). If the Passage is Canadian, Canada could cash in by charging shipping fees for sailing through Canadian waters. If it's international, fees couldn't be charged. The US is interested (obviously!) because it would be a logical way to move stuff from Alaska to the East Coast.

Not the mention that perhaps as much as a quarter of the undiscovered oil reserves of the World could lie under the Arctic ice....

i heard on the radio a news report about a town in Colorado
that usually thrives on skiing and river rafting (Vale? Aspen?)
passing a law called the Canary Law (or some such) because they
see a direct impact on their economy and the dropping snow and
river levels. The initiative is for reduction of green house
gasses, in order to slow global warming.

I swatted a mosquito today, and mid feb is usually when most
of the snow and rain in the entire year falls. It was in the
70's today and i got a sun burn last weekend while hiking.

According to presentations at the Alaska Forum on the Environment (still going on in Anchorage), it is expected that the Arctic will be ice-free by the end of the century. While increasing temperatures were predicted 25 years ago, no one expected it to be so fast.

Shipping will be able to use the Arctic Ocean year-round. However, the melt will go somewhere -- and areas like New Orleans will be where the water goes.

Crabs and other critters that need an ice cover during part of the year aren't thriving, while other species such a pink salmon are moving farther northward. Permafrost temperatures have increased two degrees at a depth of 20 meters. Arctic forests aren't growing as quickly as was predicted, while shrubs are doing very very well.

Global warming is a fact. What is in debate is the cause and what, if anything, we can do other than accept it.

Last word for me on this: do not (NOT!!) be lulled into complacency by a relative lack of snow! It will come--across the lakes, into your driveways and places of business; it WILL come. Wait until St. Paddy's day...only after then, can you even BEGIN to think of a respite and spring. Don't think that little snow in January means nothing. It really DOES mean nothing.

It's been a merciful winter so far in Boston, too -- some snowstorms, but not heavy ones, and all followed by complete thaws. However, the winter of (I think it was) 1996-1997 was almost snowless, but climaxed, with exquisite appropriateness, with a blizzard on the night of 31 March -- 1 April. So, you never know.

Sorry. It snowed in Pittsburgh, too. There was very little accumulation, but my hilly street was so icy this morning that
I walked to work about 1/2 hour away.

Because it wasn't that cold, I actually enjoyed the exercise. But I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy the walk home since it will be mostly an uphill climb. In the olden days people used to walk much more than 1/2 an hour uphill. But I guess I've become comfort corrupt.

I'll probably end up catching a bus and walking a block or so from the bus stop.

no snow? I am to blame. I bought TWO bags of ice-melting crystals in December!.........

actually, Our local weathercaster simply put up a map showing the Jet Stream had been doing weird things....some Winters the jet stream DOES weird things for awhile. Global warming is an general average, but individual Winters are just the result of strange combinations of conditions. I've live in this town (Wash DC area) for 27 years, and sometimes I shovel all Winter, and sometimes we barely see snow. But February is just getting started.

Snow? We don't have no stinkin' snow in San Diego--not that I wouldn't mind, having snow, though. I love the stuff! When I was able bodied, I didn't mind shoveling snow whilst I was in cold climes.
There is a definite drought in the Southwestern USA, and in San Diego we have had only trace rain for January-the rainy season didn't happen. This means worse wildfires this year.
My mother told me that they haven't had any rain in her spot in Eastern Oklahoma in months. Wildfires abound, & in Texas, too.

Try typing "global warming proof" into google and see what you get.

James Lovelock of Gaia fame said on the BBC this am that we're past the point of no return (just his opinion, of course) and they wondered in the studio if humans are haed-wired to self-destruct.

The snow we've had in Norwich,UK was brief and before Christmas. As a summer baby, I can hardly wait for warmth and sunshine to return, 'cos I'm a thrice-times selfish swine.

Strangely enough, as I pointed out to my father in law this afternoon, we've not had a decent proper snowfall in east London since he made Limpit a sledge when she was 5. It's still in the cellar, gently mouldering.

In Juneau, Alaska (southeastern part of state) we get an official average of 104 inches of snow. In the last ten years however an actually snowy winter has been kind of rare. We still get the snow but often rain comes two days later and washes it away.

This winter, though, is a snowy one and it's been beautiful. A big plus has been very little ice so it is great for walking and playing around in it.

They say that our weather is changing as of tomorrow- after more snow today it is supposed to reach 40 degrees tomorrow. With rain. It will be sloppy.

I live on a hill about 125 feet above sea level and I get more snow accumulation than they do even two blocks downhill. It has slumped since but I've had about 16 inches on my lawn for the last two weeks. I like to shovel out the sidewalks (pavement)making kind of a maze- the whole neighborhood cuts through my yard on my paths.

not that it really is important in the long run, but I just read another misstatement I made up thread, when I was going on about the folk sayin "burnin bread".

I should have written "However, IMO, this is just an excuse for NOT accepting personal responsibility for the consequences of one's actions"

Okay. now I feel better. If I made any other mistakes in this thread so far, somebody else can point them out to me and I'll say

Thanks.

What I meant by this is that nobody {including me} gave artbrooks credit for his joke and we should have.
