Subject: Obit: June Nichols - 7th Feb 2006 From: rich-joy Date: 07 Feb 06 - 06:47 PM It really is with deep regret that we report the passing on, last night, of June Nichols - THE doyenne of the Folk Scene in Brisbane, Australia. Ex- Bahamian and a beautiful singer, June was also the Editor of the monthly essential "Folk Rag" magazine - and more - and she will be missed SO much by SO many. Hopefully her good friend Hrothgar, will soon feel able to write something here to do her Life justice. Our love to husband Don (fellow performer and, like June, a Champion Moreton Bay Band member) and daughter Fiona. Vale June. Richenda and Paul. ABOFOTS, Maleny We really appreciated your encouragement and friendship. |

Subject: RE: Obit: June Nichols (Bahamas/Australia) 7 Feb 06 From: GUEST,Si Date: 09 Feb 06 - 05:35 AM I just thought i'd put in my 2 bob's worth to keep this thread near the top of the list. June was all the things that have been remarked as to her, and a very straight-shooter. She was very determined, an unstoppable force at times. She had that ability to verbally wrongfoot me, and then break it up with a chuckle. Self-conscious is one word which I'm sure never dscribed June. And what a singer !! I'm glad I have her singing Ballymena ( the ship, not tha Ulster town) and Come Ye Lads on a locally made Brisbane compilation, on which several of us contributed. Don , If you're reading. my heartfelt sympathy, and what a support you've been the last couple of years. I hope to make the service and wake tomorrow, if i get away from work early. I'll bring a plate. If you like I'll play a fitting air. I'm sure we should have a sing. thats' what June would have wanted. |

Subject: RE: Obit: June Nichols (Bahamas/Australia) 7 Feb 06 From: rich-joy Date: 11 Feb 06 - 03:14 AM Well, June had a great send-off yesterday arvo! Huge crowd at both the crematorium chapel AND at the wake - which was held at the East Brisbane Bowls Club (where the Folk Rag fund-raising "Folkies Old & New" concerts have been held quarterly for some years now). The farewelling crowd included many Folkie faces that, from all accounts, hadn't been seen together for yonks! Naturally there was much session singing and playing - AND morris dancing (it's OK, my lips are sealed, Hrothgar!!!) I'm sure June was enjoying it all. Cheers! R-J |
Subject: RE: Obit: June Nichols (Bahamas/Australia) 7 Feb 06 From: rich-joy Date: 03 Mar 06 - 01:34 AM some memorium writings regarding June can now be found at the Folk Rag site : http://users.tpg.com.au/folkrag/folk_rag_frameset.htm there are also photos from the service and funeral in Brisbane, Australia - and also some from the Feb 13th service in The Bahamas, in the Trinity Methodist church in Nassau, in which June was both baptised and married. Cheers! R-J |
