Subject: Question: Chimney Smoke
From: Andy in NE
Date: 27 Jan 99 - 01:58 PM

Hello all,

I'm searching for some additional verses to an old mid-western folk song I heard long ago. The chorus goes like this in 3/4 time:

Chimney smoke, Chimney Smoke
A wind'n and a whirl'n
climb'n and a twirl'n
chimney smoke, chimney smoke
chimney smoke take me home

Couldn't find anything in the database and I'm wondering if there are any additional verses.

Thanks much,

Andy

CHIMNEY SMOKE
Larry Coleman, Norman Gimbel

...But I got restless and said my goodbye.
Now I'm roamin' the hills and I'm searchin' the sky
For that chimney smoke, chimney smoke,
A-windin' and a-whirlin', a-climbin' and a-twirlin'.
Chimney smoke, why did I roam?
Chimney smoke, lead me home.

Had an acre of land and a sky full of sun....

[Sung by Harry Belafonte on "Greatest Hits," 2000; "Island in the Sun" [Bear Family Box Set], 2002; "Hold 'Em Joe," 2005; and "Only One like Me," 2006.

[Throughout, Belafonte pronounces it as 3 syllables: "chim-i-nee"]

Might's well have the whole package.

CHIMNEY SMOKE
Carry Coleman & Norman Gimbel
(Harry Belafonte)

Chimney smoke, chimney smoke
A winding and a whirling
A climbing and a twirling
Chimney smoke, why did did I roam
Chimney smoke lead me home.

There's a house on a hill by an old willow tree
Where the fire-place is burning for my love and me
But I got restless and said my goodbye
Now I'm roaming the hills and I'm searching the sky, for that

Chimney smoke, chimney smoke etc.

Half an acre of land and a sky full o' sun
And a woman who loved me and no other one
But like a sparrow one night I took flight
Now I long to be home and I pray for the sight of that

Chimney smoke, chimney smoke etc.

Now I'm riding the rails and I'm making my way
To the house on the hill where I'll settle and stay
And love my love who loved me in return
By the heart of the house where the fire-place burns, blowing

Chimney smoke, chimney smoke etc.
