Subject: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids
From: GUEST,Paul S

Hey kids,

A couple months ago I started a thread asking for song suggestions to teach my son's beaver group (I know, I heard all the jokes last time!), and got some great suggestions. They were so great in fact, that the other leaders have put me in charge of all things musical -- I'm also the only 30-something male they know who isn't afraid to sing in public.

So we have an event coming up that the kids (aged 5 to 7) need to sing a pirate song for. I searched for pirate songs here and in google and didn't come up with much. Then I tried sailor songs and ended up with many in the "The Good Ship Venus" strain.

I decided to write my own, but was hoping to expedite the folk process and see if y'all could help me write some more verses than the two I've come up with. I used the melody of Pete Seeger's "A Hayseed Like Me".

Here's what I have so far:

My ship flies a black skull and crossbones
It sails on the shiny blue sea
My parrot, it sits on my shoulder
It's the life of a pirate for me.

The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee
The life of a pirate for me
My parrot, it sits on my shoulder
It's the life of a pirate for me.

An eye patch covers my left eye
My right eye, it can't hardly see
I lost my left leg in a battle
It's the life of a pirate for me

The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee
The life of a pirate for me
I lost my left leg in a battle
It's the life of a pirate for me

I even have actions for everything, but I'm at a loss for more lyrics.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Paul

Looks like it would also fit to ROSIN THE BEAU.

I'm searching for gold and for plunder
Across the wild blue sea
From the north pole to 'down Under'
It's the life of a pirate for me!

The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee
The life of a pirate for me
From the north pole to 'down Under'
It's the life of a pirate for me.

You might work with a variant of "Drunken sailor" for lyrics. Once Charley O'Hegarty asked the kids in his audience for suggestions and they came up with "Drag him cross the deck til he's full of splinters."

From this thread Children's Street Songs 11 Jun 04 - 08:26 AM

When I was one, I had some fun
the day I went to sea.
I jumped aboard a pirate ship
and the captain said to me,
We're going this way that way, forwards backwards
Over the Irish sea
a bottle of rum to warm my tum
And that's the life for me.

When I was two, I lost my shoe
the day I went to sea etc

Make up your own rhymes - clean for adults, lavatorial for kids! Up to ten is easy but 13 upwards gets harder.

If you leave out all the rapine and butchery, the blood in the scuppers and the lost eyeballs, the hanging by outraged citizens, the smelly bilge-water personal hygiene and the loss of teeth at age 29, you are going to give these tykes the wrong impression!! :D

Amos,

You forgot the foul language, scurvy, walkin' the plank, being seasick, storms at sea, sea monsters, fallin' off the edge of the earth, scullery wenches, sea shanties, bein' shanghaied, crow's nests, and Davy Jones' locker. Though, what one of the Monkees' lockers has to do with being a pirate is beyond me. ;o)

Veggietales Lyrics - The Pirates Who Dont Do Anything

From A Very Silly Sing-Along CD

Narrator: "Joining Larry are Pa Grape and Mr. Lunt, who together make up
the infamous gang of scalliwags, the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything!"

"We are the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just
stay home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just
tell you ...
We don't do anything!

Well, I've never been Greenland and I've never been to Denver, and
I've never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul, and I've never been
to Moscow and I've never been to Tampa, and I've never been to Boston in
the fall.

All: 'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay home
and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you
..

We don't do anything. And I never hoist the mainstay and I
never swab the poop deck, and I never veer to starboard 'cuz I never
sail at all, and I've never walked the gang plank and I've never owned a
parrot, and I've never been to Boston in the fall.

All: 'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay at home
and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you
.. We don't do anything!

Well, I've never plucked a rooster and I'm not too good at
ping-pong, and I've never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall,
and I've never kissed a chipmunk and I've never gotten head lice, and
I've never been to Boston in the fall!

Pa:
"Huh? What are you talking about? What's a rooster and mashed
potatoes have to do with being a pirate??"

Mr. Lunt: "Hey, that's right! We're supposed to sing about pirate-y
things!"
Larry: "Oh ..."

Pa: "And who ever kissed a chipmunk? That's just nonsense! Why even
bring it up? Am I right? What do you think?"

Mr. Lunt: "I think you look like Cap'n Crunch!"
Pa: "Huh? No I don't!"

Mr. Lunt: "Do too."

Pa: "Do not!"

Mr. Lunt: "You're making me hungry."

Pa: "That's it, you're walkin' the plank!"

Mr. Lunt: "Says who?"

a: "Says the captain, that's who!"

Mr. Lunt: "Oh, yeah? Aye aye, Cap'n Crunch!"

"And I've never licked a spark plug and I've never sniffed a
stink bug, and I've never painted daisies on a big red rubber ball, and
I've never bathed in yogurt and I don't look good in leggings ..."

Pa: "You just don't get it!"

All: "And we've never been to Boston in the fall!"

What about a pirate's tale me hearty? Could you do with tale o' the salty seas, a treasonous crew, a stupendous storm, and a scary serpent? Aye, it's insane oceanic scuttlebutt to be sure and may need some editing for the wee ones. Here ya go me bucko.

The One What Bitsed Me Washboard's Leg Off!

Thar she blows!

Subject: Lyr Add: PACK O' PIRATES (John Warner)
From: Sandra in Sydney
Date: 14 Feb 06 - 07:05 AM

John Warner (occasional Mudcatter Jack Halyard) has a beauty -

John is a childcare worker & sings this song at work & on any occasion he works with kids. I don't know the tune, but you could PM JennyO to get the answer.

Pack of Pirates c. 11/10/96 from his 1998 CD of the same name

We're a pack of pirates, what are we?
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Rattling aroud on a rolling sea,
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Patches on our eyes, big black hats
Cannon, cutlasses and yellow-eyed cats
Heave her up and away we go!
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!

We've a great, fat ship with room in the hold
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
For plunder, prisoners, silver and gold
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
If there's no gold in the loot we take,
We'll have lemonade and a chololate cake
Heave her up and away we go!
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!

Under the Harbour Bridge we sail
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
The Skull and Crossbones at our tail
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
We'll bombard a ferry or two
With water bombs full of paint and glue
Heaver her up and away we go!
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!

Out through the Heads in our pirate barque
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Followed by a string of hungry shark
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Mean black fins follow in our wake
I wonder if sharks like chocolate cake?
Heave her up and away we go!
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!

Don't we look such a scurvy crew?
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Covered in chocolate, paint and glue
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
Didn't we have such a lovely day?
Won't Mum have a few things to say?
Heave her up and away wew go!
Pirates, Pirates, yo ho ho!
