Subject: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: GUEST,Paul S Date: 13 Feb 06 - 01:40 PM Hey kids, A couple months ago I started a thread asking for song suggestions to teach my son's beaver group (I know, I heard all the jokes last time!), and got some great suggestions. They were so great in fact, that the other leaders have put me in charge of all things musical -- I'm also the only 30-something male they know who isn't afraid to sing in public. So we have an event coming up that the kids (aged 5 to 7) need to sing a pirate song for. I searched for pirate songs here and in google and didn't come up with much. Then I tried sailor songs and ended up with many in the "The Good Ship Venus" strain. I decided to write my own, but was hoping to expedite the folk process and see if y'all could help me write some more verses than the two I've come up with. I used the melody of Pete Seeger's "A Hayseed Like Me". Here's what I have so far: My ship flies a black skull and crossbones It sails on the shiny blue sea My parrot, it sits on my shoulder It's the life of a pirate for me. The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee The life of a pirate for me My parrot, it sits on my shoulder It's the life of a pirate for me. An eye patch covers my left eye My right eye, it can't hardly see I lost my left leg in a battle It's the life of a pirate for me The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee The life of a pirate for me I lost my left leg in a battle It's the life of a pirate for me I even have actions for everything, but I'm at a loss for more lyrics. Can anyone help? Thanks, Paul |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: MMario Date: 13 Feb 06 - 03:27 PM I'm searching for gold and for plunder Across the wild blue sea From the north pole to 'down Under' It's the life of a pirate for me! The life of a pirate for me-ee-ee The life of a pirate for me From the north pole to 'down Under' It's the life of a pirate for me. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: EBarnacle Date: 13 Feb 06 - 03:29 PM You might work with a variant of "Drunken sailor" for lyrics. Once Charley O'Hegarty asked the kids in his audience for suggestions and they came up with "Drag him cross the deck til he's full of splinters." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: Snuffy Date: 13 Feb 06 - 07:07 PM From this thread Children's Street Songs 11 Jun 04 - 08:26 AM When I was one, I had some fun the day I went to sea. I jumped aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me, We're going this way that way, forwards backwards Over the Irish sea a bottle of rum to warm my tum And that's the life for me. When I was two, I lost my shoe the day I went to sea etc Make up your own rhymes - clean for adults, lavatorial for kids! Up to ten is easy but 13 upwards gets harder. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: GUEST,reggie miles Date: 13 Feb 06 - 10:16 PM Amos, You forgot the foul language, scurvy, walkin' the plank, being seasick, storms at sea, sea monsters, fallin' off the edge of the earth, scullery wenches, sea shanties, bein' shanghaied, crow's nests, and Davy Jones' locker. Though, what one of the Monkees' lockers has to do with being a pirate is beyond me. ;o) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: writing a pirate song for kids From: GUEST,the crimson pirate Date: 13 Feb 06 - 10:58 PM Veggietales Lyrics - The Pirates Who Dont Do Anything From A Very Silly Sing-Along CD Narrator: "Joining Larry are Pa Grape and Mr. Lunt, who together make up the infamous gang of scalliwags, the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything!" "We are the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you ... We don't do anything! Well, I've never been Greenland and I've never been to Denver, and I've never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul, and I've never been to Moscow and I've never been to Tampa, and I've never been to Boston in the fall. All: 'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you .. We don't do anything. And I never hoist the mainstay and I never swab the poop deck, and I never veer to starboard 'cuz I never sail at all, and I've never walked the gang plank and I've never owned a parrot, and I've never been to Boston in the fall. All: 'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay at home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you .. We don't do anything! Well, I've never plucked a rooster and I'm not too good at ping-pong, and I've never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall, and I've never kissed a chipmunk and I've never gotten head lice, and I've never been to Boston in the fall! Pa: "Huh? What are you talking about? What's a rooster and mashed potatoes have to do with being a pirate??" Mr. Lunt: "Hey, that's right! We're supposed to sing about pirate-y things!" Larry: "Oh ..." Pa: "And who ever kissed a chipmunk? That's just nonsense! Why even bring it up? Am I right? What do you think?" Mr. Lunt: "I think you look like Cap'n Crunch!" Pa: "Huh? No I don't!" Mr. Lunt: "Do too." Pa: "Do not!" Mr. Lunt: "You're making me hungry." Pa: "That's it, you're walkin' the plank!" Mr. Lunt: "Says who?" a: "Says the captain, that's who!" Mr. Lunt: "Oh, yeah? Aye aye, Cap'n Crunch!" "And I've never licked a spark plug and I've never sniffed a stink bug, and I've never painted daisies on a big red rubber ball, and I've never bathed in yogurt and I don't look good in leggings ..." Pa: "You just don't get it!" All: "And we've never been to Boston in the fall!" |
