I conducted an interview with Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio on January 11 that will be broadcast on radio station WHRV 89.5 FM in Eastern VA at 8:00 PM Eastern Sunday, Feb 19, 2006. Those outside Eastern VA will be able to listen thru the internet at that time at www.whrv.org.

That will make a few Kingston Trio fans around here (and there aren't alot I dont think-but a few) happy. I heard he had to give up performing 'cause of some health problems (?)...and was the last of the originals

Good little "tune" foolestroupe--but after many a year with scotch and sodas and ciggies rumor has it he has entirely cleaned up his "old ways" (being on oxygen 24/7 will do that to ya!). He's quite the temperate soul these days I guess. Im hoping to be able to catch the interview via the net. It's easy to forget how big those guys were or the company they traveled in--hell, even Sinatra said he wouldn't "cover" Scotch and Soda. I bet the man has alot of great anecdotes and somebody oughtta get 'em on tape before another legend passes like so many did this past year; jest my 4 cents or so.

Does Shane comment on these tunes in between them...notice you got some Bud & Travis and Stan Wilson too. Friends of Bob's? Didn't Stan pass away some time ago or am I mixing him up with someone else?

A few songs are played alone, but most are sets. Two are from the Weavers repertoire (Corey, COrey, based on Darling Corey, and the first Christmas song), the next two are Tahitian Polynesian songs (Shane and Guard learned them in Hawaii years before the KT), then two Bob Shane solo spots (S&S/Good Year), Low Bridge thru Coast of CA make up a Westbound trip across the US. Bob has comments on some of these, and there is some other conversaion between sets. Bob Shane credits Stan Wilson and Travis Edmonson as major influences once he got to California, hence spotlighting them (Wilson also wrote A Rollin' Stone and Jane, Jane, Jane). Note that I deliberately avoided the KT's biggest hit singles - saving them for a future part 2). Wilson passed on a few years ago. Edmonson lives in Arizona near Bob, and Bob sees him occasionally. They performed as a duo in 1968.

My US friends on Bloodlines, the John Stewart board, have mentioned a that Travis Edmundson has turned up a few times in recent years around the KT Fantasy Camp in Scottsdale [and sung a song once or twice]. There has been a bit of discussion about him and Bud on the list [though I have never actuially heard their songs myself].

A lot of folks here consider the KT a "joke" vis-a-vis folk music, but for us "folks" who cut our musical teeth on them, they deserve a lot more credit than they get. I LOVE this old stuff...actual interaction between the icons, and what's this "fantasy camp" bit? Time to hang out with the "originals" or what? Is this like the baseball version of this..where you hang with major leaguers of yore? You gotta link to "Bloodliners"? Many think John Stewart is the Woody Guthrie of today. I ain't gonna argue it.

Fantasy camp is an annual fest held in recent years by John Stewart and Nick Reynolds, where attendees (campers) get to rehearse and sing a song or two as the third member of the Fantasy trio, and hear all the others. Bob Shane showed up not too long ago. It costs somewhere around $2000 for the weekend.

These men were in German with records during the late end of the time as a big USA act singing a song in German but it never was popular here. I recall my older brother bought thier German song and liked them very much.

The KT single in German was "Rocky"/"Old Kentucky Home", It's on the Capitol Years 4CD box set as well as one of the Bear Family Boxes, plus a couple of the KT releases at www.folkera.com.

Nice to see your post here Ken Brock.

Annony Mouse is right. The KT don't get a lot of the credit they deserve here from the purists who want their folkies to bray, have beards or no teeth to be authentic.

I'd much rather have tight harmonies, fine musicianship, and a feel good entertaining attitude.

Bob Shane was the glue that held a once great group together. The only problem I have is that today's group, of which Shane holds the rights to the name and are good musicians notwithstanding, are an authorized tribute band taking bows for the accomplishments (repertoire & arrangements, the "act") of others.

It took me several years (when I was a kid) to realize how much of a vocal foundation Mr. Shane was to the KT...like a lot, I figgered once Dave Guard left, it was going to be very different sounding. It was then I realized how critical Shane's vocals were to that KT sound--and Nick Reynolds on the higher parts. Shane, Reynolds and George Grove toured not that many years back as the KT. I guess as MG said, todays group is original-less. I Googled them back when we were having the "most influencial album" debate and I guess the current Trio HAS recorded a relatively recent CD-then I read they changed another member again, who went solo or something.

Bob Haworth was fired by Bob Shane. The album you mention was just a rehash of all the old material to mostly sell at concerts instead of the original recordings. The mostly nostalgic and clueless audience would ask less questions and realize the hits were not made by the group they just shelled out $40 for.
