Batman's War On Terror

Holy terror, Batman! The Caped Crusader is set to take on his biggest fight yet - against Osama bin Laden's less than cartoonish al Qaeda.

Graphic book writer Frank Miller has told a comic book convention in San Francisco he wants Batman to ''kick al Qaada's ass.''

Miller, best known for his darker version of Batman and for Sin City, said it was silly to have his hero chase made-up baddies like the Riddler when there were real-life villains to deal with.

''It is a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we're up against," he said.

The story is based on DC Comics' famed superhero defending his hometown of Gotham City against a terrorist attack.

It is not the first time real people has appeared in the world of superheroes, he added.

"Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That's one of the things they're there for," Miller said.

The graphic novel, half of which has been finished by Miller, is expected to appear next year.

Gee Whiz!

I remember those good old Superman cartoons (got some on DVD!) about the nazis!

And those war comics 'fighting the commies'!!!!

Yeah. I remember them too. Also the war comics with the subhuman German Nazis and even more subhuman "Japs" (complete with buck teeth and thick glasses). Boy, were they ever stupid! They made me sick even as a kid.

Oh, this is going to get me back into regualarilkly buying Batman comic books...

Yeah, I can almost see the big puffy cloud shaped caption over the illustration of Batman swoopin' down on a bent over bearded guy in the desert pulling a dialysis machine on a golf cart... "SWAAAAAP! Take that creep!"...

Personally??? I think the Joker could use another good butt whup...

Superheroes should not prostitute themselves as propaganda icons for contemporary political disputes, in my opinion. They lose their legitimate fantasy credentials in so doing. Same with cartoon characters.

Picked up a couple of Liberty Meadows compilations and Sandman graph-nov (hey, I just made that abbreve up, doesn't it sound stupid?) today at the library. Got some deep reading to do this weekend (since Dibbs can't make it).

Bugs and Elmer did War Bonds promos back during WWII. They didn't play those on the Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Hour when I was a kid, though.
