Yes, I went to school in Canada, and I would have received the cassette around 1982-84. I can't say for sure, but the narration didn't sound like a radio program, more like it may have been from an album extolling the virtues of canadiana. I don't recall any pronounced accent. For a long time I had thought it might be Burton Cummings (which it is not), but that gives an idea of the type of voice. Maybe.

NytCrawlr, in what year did you receive this cassette? If we knew that it might narrow down the range of possibilities. Also, did you go to school in Canada? Does the commentary sound like it was part of a radio or TV broadcast? I believe the song first became widely known through Catherine MacKinnon circa 1960. What sort of accent does the singer have?

I have it on a CD called "The Sounds of Nova Scotia". It is produced by Atlantic Canada (1-800-461-3361), and sung by Catherine MacKinnon.

Gordon Bok recorded it but I don't remember which recording it was on. I think the Irish Rovers also did it many years ago.

Can be found in Edith Fowke's, Penguin Book of Canadian Folk Songs (1973) pp.56-57.
If you can't get a copy I'll happily post a text.

Hi. Don't know if you can help me or not, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I am trying to find a certain recording of the song "Farewell to Nova Scotia", and thought that perhaps someone there could point me towards who might have done it. I received a copy of it on cassette when I was young, given to me by my music teacher at the time. It's a very nice recording, by a male singer, prefaced by a narrator speaking about the song, and the feelings expressed in it. He talks of the feeling between a man and his country "whether it be the peaks of the rocky mountains, or the coast of Nova Scotia", and how "often a singer will express these feelings in a song" (these quotes may not be exact but they are very close).
