Greetings:

To me Sis was not only an inspiration; she was also a friend and an active encourager. She and Gordon published several of my songs in Broadside when I was just a young whippersnapper, and they even invited me to perform at some of the informal hoots they had at their apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

After a long absence from the organized folk scene, I was very proud to be asked to perform in a Sis Cunningham tribute concert held in New York City in November 1997. I was also proud to be asked to appear in A Song for Sis, the Sis Cunningham memorial concert that took place in October 1994.

Thanks for honoring Sis Cunningham. She was also an occasional member of the Almanac Singers with Pete seeger and Woody Guthrie in the early 1940's.

She certainly was an inspiration to many young topical singers.

UNC library, where the Broadside Collection archives reside (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) says: "Agnes (Sis) Cunningham, musician and magazine publisher of New York, N.Y., founded Broadside, a magazine devoted to topical songs, with her husband, Gordon Friesen, in the early 1960s. They recorded and published many of the leading folksingers of the folk revival Smithsonian Folkways Recordings
