Thanks but no - this is on a Martyn Wyndham-Read CD "Oceans In The Sky" but cannot make out one line. It must be me, no way it can be Martin!

Jacqued - if you PM me your e-mail address I'll pass it on to Mike with your request. Mike played fiddle in my group 'Heritage' in the late 1970s and early 80s and, some time later wound up playing regularly with Martin Wyndham-Read. He is now a very successful storyteller, fiddler and folk-arts organisation director based in Cornwall.

Jack

Check out another grand song from Mike O'Connor, The White Shepherd. It's great to hear that good songs with style are still being produced.

Thanks, Catters.   Anglo, line 6 verse 2.

GUEST Scotus (minus cookie)   Many thanks for your help but have done this.   Mike was a great help when I ran into translation trouble with the chorus of "Carrying Nelson Home".   It is on the same CD "Oceans In The Sky" and the emotional effect on us was staggering.   If you want your patriotic withers wrung, just listen to it.

Guest Auldtimer   The "White Shepherd" is on the above CD - a cracking collection.

It is well worth getting hold of books and CDs of Mike's songs - he really is a songwriter for all seasons! His song "Summon up the Sun" is the title of Craig;Morgan;Robson's Christmas show, and will also be on their new album. If you are looking for a brilliant song to sing on may day, you could do a lot worse than go for Mike's "Singing in the May"

Refresh. I too am puzzled. The latter part of the line is indecipherable as Martyn sings it. Hopefully, someone will enlighten us.

There is an earlier discussion in the thread Lyr Req: The Last Song (Mike O'Connor). Unfortunately it hasn't the lyrics either.

Reinhard is correct, "The Last Song" as sung by Martyn Wyndham-Read is by Mike O'Connor. If I have time in a day or so I will be glad to give it a try.

Here's my transcription.

There are a lot of phrases here that don't make sense to me; I'm hoping others will suggest corrections.

THE LAST SONG
As sung by Martyn Wyndham-Read & No Man's Band on "Oceans in the Sky" (2005)

I sang in golden autumn fields, sun will rise today.
I dreamed of stars that, shining down, were singing in another May.
I saw the white sail lower down in harbors made of dreams.
The mountain king forgot his crown where the snow's white shepherd gleams.

CHORUS: It may not be long, just a line or two.
If this should be the last song, it will be for you.

I wept for ev'ry star that fell, or silver wing laid down.
The songs unheard, once known so well, drew memories arise and groan.
Still buried deep within the soul is o'er the tinner's hand.
As much remains still yet to hear as ever graced this singing land. CHORUS

So if a wild persistent voice calls across the way,
Do not think a gift of choice is ever as to hold or say,
For sing we may and sing we must above this world of clay,
For music never turns to dust; harmony cannot decay. CHORUS

I hear in verse 2

The songs unheard, once known so well, drew memories, arise and grow.

and in verse 3

Do not think the gift of choice is ever as to hold or save,

Mike O'Connor posted to the Poldark thread about a year ago (having composed songs for that production), it must be possible to locate that thread and PM him.
