Subject: RE: Tech: Mother of toilet seat From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 28 Feb 06 - 09:48 AM maybe a email or phone call to Brandoni might be useful.. They sell custom pearloid re-finishes for guitars, and might provide a source of materials from Italy for a DIY project ??? http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/index2.html |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mother of toilet seat From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Feb 06 - 12:02 PM There are numerous places one can go for materials and parts for luthiery. In the US I have ordered a few items, with good service and friendly treatment from Luthiers Mercantile. Using their Quick Search for "inlay" goes to: Inlay materials, tools, and instructions While I havent' had occasion to buy anything from them, quite a few people have recommended Stewart MacDonald inlay, with similar selections. If you want "authentic," Home Depot, any builders supply or hardware shop, or many home decorating shops have real toilet seats… some somewhat similar to the previously suggested accordians. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mother of toilet seat From: Jon W. Date: 28 Feb 06 - 03:06 PM You might try inquiring over at the Musical Instrument Makers Forum. They might have sources on their links page. The suggestion of Formica isn't a bad one if you can find the type of pattern you're after. There are a couple of other manufacturers of the stuff (technical name is High Pressure Laminate or HPL) also. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mother of toilet seat From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 28 Feb 06 - 10:41 PM Check with luthiers and instrument repair-people in your area. They may have an old electric guitar pick-guard that you could salvage a big enough piece from. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mother of toilet seat From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Mar 06 - 02:44 AM At Luthier's Mercantile Faux Turquoise Inlay Material "This great new product idea came from Northern California luthier, Rick Micheletti. You can see it in some of Rick's guitars at the upcoming Healdsburg Guitar Festival. Nearly indistinguishable from real turquoise stone, this material is far easier to cut. It can also be easily sanded or filed and it looks great under finish. Each piece measures approximately 1 7/8" x 6" x .060": In stock, $26 each." Ten other colors/patterns While you don't necessarily need the standard .060 inch thick stuff, to do a decent inlay job you probably do need something that's flat and with uniform thickness. You probably could work a piece of pick guard down, but you'll likely burn up the difference in purchase price in sandpaper. I think the plain "white" or the "green heart" at the second link would be just about the right accordion flash…although the Turquoise isn't to dull. John |
