Subject: RE: Folklore: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: Matthew Edwards Date: 01 Mar 06 - 07:52 PM The Topic LP of John Reilly's songs "The Bonny Green Tree" 12T359 seems to have been a fairly limited issue, and I haven't come across many second-hand copies, even on eBay. Having said that, a number of the songs from that LP have since been reissued by Topic:- In The Voice of the People series Vol 3 TSCD653 Track 13 The Well Below the Valley Vol 7 TSCD657 Track 19 The Rosin Box Vol 10 TSCD660 Track 8 Adieu Unto All True Lovers Vol 15 TSCD665 Track 7 Old Carathee Vol 17 TSCD667 Track 2 Lord Baker Track 13 Once There Lived A Captain and also on the Topic compilation Irish Voices TSCD702 Track 5 The Raggle Taggle Gypsy. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Mar 06 - 08:32 PM Try your local record library if you're anywhere near one; there's always a chance. I found the LP at the central library in Sheffield, and (because I couldn't find one to buy) made a tape copy for myself. I don't have the gear for copying tapes at the moment, but if you need the sleevenotes (they are good) that wouldn't be too difficult to arrange. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: MartinRyan Date: 02 Mar 06 - 05:22 AM TG4 (the mostly Irish Language TV station in Ireland) has just started showing a series on the music of travellers/tinkers. The first program included archive material on John Reilly and the work done by Tom Munnelly, the collector. John Reilly was a wonderful singer. Regards |
Subject: RE: Folklore: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: GUEST,J C Date: 02 Mar 06 - 02:29 PM Martin is right; John Reilly was a wonderful singer. Comhaltas refused to give him a booking because he wasn't 'Sean Nós'! He died of malnutrition after being found collapsed in the derelict house he was living in in Boyle. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: GUEST,J C Date: 03 Mar 06 - 05:39 AM Well it wasn't actually. It was deprivation and neglect brought about by the same bigotry that is fuelling the present day ethnic cleansing that is taking place in Ireland today – helped along by those who are happy to look the other way – and those who find the plight of travellers funny! |
Subject: RE: Seek album: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 24 Sep 10 - 11:40 AM If anyone is still looking, there's a copy on ebay at the moment. I am not the seller, don't know him/her either. |
Subject: RE: Seek album: The Bonny Green Tree, John Reilly From: Matthew Edwards Date: 24 Sep 10 - 03:35 PM Thanks Peter for that link. I finally managed to get hold of a copy of the John Reilly LP a while ago, but there are a lot of interesting available LPs from the same seller (I don't know who it is either), some of which I've never seen on sale before; they obviously belonged to a serious collector.
