Subject: celtic waltzes
From: Musicman

I am creating a CD of celtic waltzes (medatative CD, slow waltzes) to be dedicated to my wife who passed away unexpectedly this month (she was only 44!). I am interested in you favorites that I could include. I know the standard O'Carolin tunes (Fanny Powers, Hewlitt), Dark Island etc. If anyone has some favorites you think might be appropriate, I'd love to hear them. Send me a midi file or Noteworthy score of the melody. The money that we raise will go towards a scholarship for voice students (she was a voice teacher).

Thanks for you help.

"Give Me Your Hand". Don't know read music never mind send it, sorry, but I did think this a very beatuiful old time waltz. My deepest condolences for your loss, I hope in some of these waltzes you'll find a bit of comfort. Barry

Sorry to hear about your wife, Musicman. I think what you are trying to put together is a wonderful idea. I'm sure many of your friends here will want to help.

Barry,

I have just e-mailed "Give me your hand", "The Arran Boat", "Carolan's ramble to Cashel," and "Carolan's Welcome."

If we post here what we have sent off then hopefully Musicman won't be innundated with lots of copies of the same tune.

Slainte

alison

Thanks for the support. I had forgotten about "give me your hand". Appropriate title too, don't you think?

While not "celtic" per se, Margaret's Waltz by an Englishman named Shaw is very nice and quite appropriate, because he wrote it in memory of his wife.

Natalie MacMaster plays it in concert, but I don't know if she has recorded it.

I believe that there are waltzes from Newfoundland but someone from there would have to help you. IIRC "Now I'm 64" is a waltz.

Anybody got a recording/midi/music of Margaret's Waltz? Just so happens that her mom's name is Margaret. Would be nice to include. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dear Musicman, I am so sorry you have lost your wife...please know my heart is with you...How are the rest of your family members managing? Roxanna's Waltz is very beautiful but I'm not sure it is Celtic. A version of it is in the Fiddler's Fakebook. Maybe Alison could send you a Midi...my deepest sympathy...harpgirl

Musicman, I think that your idea of producing a CD in memory of your wife, is beautiful.

I have the sheet music of Margaret's Waltz and I will write it into Noteworthy (programme) and send you the Midi file. Our session group also plays Farewell to Devon with Margaret's Waltz as a medley. I'll send you that as well.

Also Rosbif Waltz is lovely. Alison started a thread about it a while back and got an answer (from me) and I started a thread about a year ago and got no answer. Ah well... I will send you the Midi file of that too.

Kind regards Helen

Condolences, Paul. There are three tunes I'd suggest. None are "waltzes" per se, but they may be suitable for your purposes:

Duncan Bàn MacIntyre's Màiri Bhàn Òg
This song was written by him when he married his wife. They apparently lived a long and happy time. This was back in the late 17th century or 18th. It's timeless and been both sung, and just as an instrumental. On a number of recordings from Cape Breton, most recently Jackie Dunn's Dunn to a T

Maurice Leemon's If Ever You Were Mine
This has been only around for about 20 years, but is a very popular tune to dance to in the Nova Scotia area, among the Cape Bretoners. It's an Irish tune, and a CFA, Silver Donald Cameron wrote a wonderful song to it for his wife, Lulu. She recently passed away too. It was sung on Scott MacMillan's Minnie Sessions' Volume 1. The tune by itself is on Natalie MacMaster's Fit as a Fiddle.

Niel Gow's Lament For His Second Wife
This is somewhat of a standard here in the Maritimes since almost EVERYONE plays it. My current favourite version is by a young lady, Màiri Rankin of Mabou. She's only 18, but is a phenomenom with this tune.

Thanks George for the additions. Any chance of a midi file of the melody? If anybody sends me music, I would appreciate any information regarding the song that I could include on the album (composer, trad. or not, etc.)

Waltzes not required, by the way, we are including Sally Gardens in the album and a few homegrown melodies as well.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. It's wonderful to be able to cast a wider net in search of great music.

Musicman

Subject: Tune Add: JANUARY WALLS
From: Barbara Shaw
Date: 02 Feb 99 - 09:41 PM

Paul (Musicman), That's such a nice thing you are doing for your wife. My sincere condolences on your loss.

I wrote a waltz called "JANUARY WALLS" on 1/10/99, which I will try to post here using the miditext software. (My first time posting a song). I have a midi file which I can send you in an e-mail if the translation doesn't work, but here goes, in case you might like this. The lyrics are written but not necessarily finished.

Dear Paul,

May I please add my name to those wishing you my best thoughts at this time.

In a recent thread Bob Bolton posted the tune to A Starry Night For A Ramble. To echo Helen's sentiments at that time, I believe it to be an elegantly simple and enchanting tune, and one that I would be proud to commend.

Sincerest Regards John

Paul,

Your love for your wife has touched me deeply. I have literally tried to add to this thread at least 6 or 7 times, but everything I tried to say seemed trite, considering your loss. I am searching through my collection, and will add to the suggestions as I come upon them. But I just had to tell you that you have taken our community to another level, and I feel as though we are all in your debt for it. You see, you have shared your loss with us and allowed us to be a part of your working through it. I cannot think of a greater expression of friendship for us, and I cannot think of a finer expression of the love, respect, friendship and partnership you have had with your wife. Thank you for this, it is another of the reasons that I think we have a remarkable social experience going on here. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, and that we will all do our part to help make this idea work.

All the very best,

Mick Lane

I want to thank everyone for your kind interest and participation in this project. I bet if you lived in the Vancouver area I'd have plenty of offers to play as well. Such is the spirit one finds here. I have a wonderful selection of music now to use, some of which were donated here. I will try to post an RA file of one of the tracks when we get the CD completed.

I have a wonderful resource in the recording in my brother-in-law who is a professional musician, studio in the garage and is a master on the guitar, mandolin (actually uses a laudin), and many other fretted instruments. (He plays currently for Sarah McLaughlin).

Thank you all again for your kind sentiments and support.

Paul Evenden Vancouver, BC, Canada Musicman

Try to listen to 'Midwinter's Waltz' by Boys of the Lough. It is the most beautiful tune I've heard!!

Ah, Paul, what a lovely idea. I just now found this thread. Have you thought of using Ravel's "Pavanne pour un enfante defunte"? Not celtic, but a lovely waltz just the same.
Be well, my friend. All of us hold you in our hearts.
Blessings,
Barbara

You might try The Radio Sweethearts Waltz. While she didn't write the tune or the words, Kate Rusby does a nice version on her CD "Hourglass".

Of course, you also must know (I'm going to butcher the spelling) "Shebeg Shamore" and "Samradh, Samradh"? I know the Cheiftains have done them both. I am as poor with words as I am with spelling, but Mick Lane expresses my thoughts exactly. I wish we could all come help make this cd in person. Let us know how it goes, and take care.

Paul...my heart goes out to you and your family. There are two traditional Irish tunes that that I have always found to be quite beautiful. The first is called "Baidin Fheidlimi" and I have only heard it sung in Irish, and so I am ignorant of the meaning of the words. It is a lovely melody, like a lullaby. The other is "The Nightingale".Unfortunately,I have neither song sheets nor lyrics, but perhaps you or some other Mudcatter has knowledge of them....Ernie

"If you post it, they will come!"

You folks are amazing! I might have to do a double album if this keeps up.

Again, thank you for all the support. You're not making this any easier. I keep getting to much good music and have to figure a way to include the next 'beautiful melody' that comes my way. *grin*

What would happen if we were all able to meet somewhere and spend time playing great music?

Keep smiling everybody.

One that is played a lot in our sessions is the Bottine Souriante waltz Hommage a Phillipe Bruneau. It's on the Traversee de'l Atlantique CD, but I haven't transcribed it yet. Jonathan.

Paul-- my condolences.

The most strikingly lovely and celtic-sounding waltz I have heard in many years is "Nancy's Waltz". I don't have a midi file, but it is on Natalie MacMaster's album "Fit as a fiddle", already mentioned in this thread. She notes the tune's composer is Chris Romaine of Washington D.C.

Best wishes

Bill Cameron

I was on HearMe a couple of days ago and Mbo played Rosbif Waltz which he got from Alison. This goes back to the first personal contact I had with Alison because I sent her the sheet music back in July 1998 and she made it into a midi file. Then she played it on HearMe and sent the GIF to Mbo and then it came full circle because I heard him play it on guitar - beautiful.

So I thought it might make it easier to post it on the MIDI page rather than everyone e-mailing it around individually. I can find out the details of a book of tunes by the Rosbif band which has the waltz in it. The book is called Massif Central and is available from Celtic Southern Cross in Tasmania.

Rosbif Waltz, is by a band which I believe is called Rosbif, possibly a Canadian Band http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=8928#56524

Paul,

What you are doing here is a most good and decent thing, and I admire you for it. My sincerest condolences. Loss has a way of igniting creativity, may yours be an honour and tribute.

I might suggest that you write something yourself, and/or waltzefy something else. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Alterios' Waltz by John Whelan (sp?)...I think it's been printed in Sing Out Magazine

The Buttermere Waltz by Simon Mayor...appears on the Second Mandolin Album and in his instructional video/book

The Canadian Waltz... not sure of its origin but there been discussion of it lately here on Mudcat

The New Canadian Waltz by Pierre Schryer...on the cd of the same name

Peace, Mooh.
