Subject: celtic waltzes From: Musicman Date: 29 Jan 99 - 08:32 PM I am creating a CD of celtic waltzes (medatative CD, slow waltzes) to be dedicated to my wife who passed away unexpectedly this month (she was only 44!). I am interested in you favorites that I could include. I know the standard O'Carolin tunes (Fanny Powers, Hewlitt), Dark Island etc. If anyone has some favorites you think might be appropriate, I'd love to hear them. Send me a midi file or Noteworthy score of the melody. The money that we raise will go towards a scholarship for voice students (she was a voice teacher). Thanks for you help. Natalie MacMaster plays it in concert, but I don't know if she has recorded it. I believe that there are waltzes from Newfoundland but someone from there would have to help you. IIRC "Now I'm 64" is a waltz. |

I have the sheet music of Margaret's Waltz and I will write it into Noteworthy (programme) and send you the Midi file. Our session group also plays Farewell to Devon with Margaret's Waltz as a medley. I'll send you that as well. Also Rosbif Waltz is lovely. Alison started a thread about it a while back and got an answer (from me) and I started a thread about a year ago and got no answer. Ah well... I will send you the Midi file of that too. This song was written by him when he married his wife. They apparently lived a long and happy time. This was back in the late 17th century or 18th. It's timeless and been both sung, and just as an instrumental. On a number of recordings from Cape Breton, most recently Jackie Dunn's Dunn to a T Maurice Leemon's If Ever You Were Mine This has been only around for about 20 years, but is a very popular tune to dance to in the Nova Scotia area, among the Cape Bretoners. It's an Irish tune, and a CFA, Silver Donald Cameron wrote a wonderful song to it for his wife, Lulu. She recently passed away too. It was sung on Scott MacMillan's Minnie Sessions' Volume 1. The tune by itself is on Natalie MacMaster's Fit as a Fiddle. Niel Gow's Lament For His Second Wife This is somewhat of a standard here in the Maritimes since almost EVERYONE plays it. My current favourite version is by a young lady, Màiri Rankin of Mabou. She's only 18, but is a phenomenom with this tune. |

If anybody sends me music, I would appreciate any information regarding the song that I could include on the album (composer, trad. or not, etc.) Waltzes not required, by the way, we are including Sally Gardens in the album and a few homegrown melodies as well. I have literally tried to add to this thread at least 6 or 7 times, but everything I tried to say seemed trite, considering your loss. I am searching through my collection, and will add to the suggestions as I come upon them. But I just had to tell you that you have taken our community to another level, and I feel as though we are all in your debt for it. You see, you have shared your loss with us and allowed us to be a part of your working through it. I cannot think of a greater expression of friendship for us, and I cannot think of a finer expression of the love, respect, friendship and partnership you have had with your wife. I bet if you lived in the Vancouver area I'd have plenty of offers to play as well. Such is the spirit one finds here. I have a wonderful selection of music now to use, some of which were donated here. I will try to post an RA file of one of the tracks when we get the CD completed. I have a wonderful resource in the recording in my brother-in-law who is a professional musician, studio in the garage and is a master on the guitar, mandolin (actually uses a laudin), and many other fretted instruments. There are two traditional Irish tunes that that I have always found to be quite beautiful.The first is called "Baidin Fheidlimi" and I have only heard it sung in Irish,and so I am ignorant of the meaning of the words. It is a lovely melody, like a lullaby.The other is "The Nightingale".Unfortunately,I have neither song sheets nor lyrics,but perhaps you or some other Mudcatter has knowledge of them....Ernie |

I don't have a midi file, but it is on Natalie MacMaster's album "Fit as a fiddle", already mentioned in this thread. She notes the tune's composer is Chris Romaine of Washington D.C. This goes back to the first personal contact I had with Alison because I sent her the sheet music back in July 1998 and she made it into a midi file. Then she played it on HearMe and sent the GIF to Mbo and then it came full circle because I heard him play it on guitar - beautiful. So I thought it might make it easier to post it on the MIDI page rather than everyone e-mailing it around individually. I can find out the details of a book of tunes by the Rosbif band which has the waltz in it. The book is called Massif Central and is available from Celtic Southern Cross in Tasmania. Alterios' Waltz by John Whelan (sp?)...I think it's been printed in Sing Out Magazine The Buttermere Waltz by Simon Mayor...appears on the Second Mandolin Album and in his instructional video/book The Canadian Waltz... not sure of its origin but there been discussion of it lately here on Mudcat The New Canadian Waltz by Pierre Schryer...on the cd of the same name Peace, Mooh.
