Subject: RE: Tune/CHORDS: Harbo and Samuelson...? From: GUEST,Joe Maurer Date: 10 Jul 11 - 01:48 PM Don't know if anyone would still be looking for these 10 years on, but I was, so I thought I'd post them in case someone came across this thread. I got these by watching a video of Jerry Bryant playing the song (listen for yourself to get the tune & rhythm): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rdqQxlx9hI&feature=related He plays it in C with capo on 2nd fret (so, sounding in the key of D) Verse: C Am Dm Em C Am F G C Am Dm Em C Am F-G C For music theory folks/people trying to transcribe to another key: I vi ii iii I vi IV V I vi ii iii I vi IV-V I Chorus: F C G C F C G C F C G C F C G C Theory: IV I V I etc... Just to spice it up a little, I like to play the chorus: F C G C F C G Am F C G C F C G C Cheers, Joe Maurer |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: harbo & samuelson From: Charlie Baum Date: 18 Jun 01 - 12:21 AM Also on Rick Lee's album :There's Talk About a Fence" on the Waterbug label. Rick's notes follow: 3. "The Ballad of Harbo and Samuelsen," 6:38, © 1988, Jerry Bryant Jerry.Bryant@kp.org, Old Fashioned Music, BMI, 63 Hildreth Ave., S. Hadley, MA 01075 Rick Lee, vocal and keyboards; Andy May, guitar; recorded by Huck Bennert at Wellspring, Concord, MA Long before hearing Jerry Bryant, I learned this version in Norfolk, VA, from the Seattle-based duo, William Pint and Felicia Dale pintndale@aol.com "I had to write this song (1985) because it was astounding to me that these two men had accomplished such a feat over 100 years ago and NO ONE REMEMBERED. I am amazed at the perserverance, guts and stamina it took for them to cross the ocean in an 18 foot open boat, without the benefit of freeze-dried food, GPS navigation systems, radios, flashlights, nylon, aluminum, and everything else modern adventurers take for granted. My hope is that my song will allow an awareness of Harbo and Samuelsen's achievement to reach a wide audience, and will provide an inspiration for folks to keep trying no matter what obstacles confront them." -- JB --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: harbo & samuelson From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Jun 01 - 09:05 PM I seem to remember being in a bookstore not too long ago (probably in an airport) and noticing a book about the journey of Harbo and Samuelson. Apparently there was an attempt to put the boat on tour afterward but it was a flop. As I recall from skimming the book, neither of the men profited very much from their arduous adventure. It was also interesting to see that the boat was named "Fox" because that was the name of the man who put up the prize. Anybody know anything else about the story? Next time I'll buy the book! Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: harbo & samuelson From: Barry Finn Date: 16 Jun 01 - 10:52 PM You might try the CD by the guy who wrote it, Jerry Bryant, the song is the title of the CD. Jerry's also penned some other gems that are on it too. Barry |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: harbo & samuelson From: Mark Cohen Date: 16 Jun 01 - 09:16 PM There's also a wonderful version by William Pint and Felicia Dale, also Seattleites, on their album "Port of Dreams". It's also on one of the Waterbug anthology CDs. I highly recommend checking out this label; just about all of their artists are excellent. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Harbo and Samuelson...? From: Barry Finn Date: 31 Jan 99 - 12:35 AM Sorry that I can't write out music but Jerry Bryant who wrote this has it on tape, titled the same, Pint & Dale recorded this on their Port Of Dreams CD. Scotty, hearing it on WERS means you're local to Jerry (& myself), he's not far from the Springfield area. He'll be preforming at NEFFA in April if you want to grab him, if you'd like I have his e-mail, post me off forum for it if you'd like. Barry |
