"Doctors say 1 in 5 women diagnosed with the disease (lung cancer) never lit a cigarette."

That's something to remember.

Mike's Mum and her sister both came into that category. Difference was, they'd both lived a long life by then.

Yes, but at 44 you should have half your life still to go.

I think one of the greatest fears a parent faces is what will happen to their children if they die while their children are young. Her work as a parent wasn't finished, Clinton, and that is heartbreaking.

" Her work as a parent wasn't finished"

Apparently someone thought differently (If you believe in that sort of thing....)

It may be a strange thought but sometimes it seems to me that people's deaths are connected in beneficial ways that we don't necessarily recognize.

For instance, my brother, as his lymphoma came ever closer to taking him, was worried about what his wife would do after he was gone. She was too young for medicare and she had a bad back and wasn't able to work fulltime; their savings were long gone. Then her mother died and his wife found herself literally a millionaire (she knew her mother had money from a chain of florist and landscape shops but she had no idea of how much); her financial worries were over. Her mother died in July, my brother died in September.

Dana Reeve was the stalwart advocate for and main support of her husband for many years. Had she died before he did, he would have not only been bereft but his whole life and care would have changed.

Their children, sad as their loss is, have been given a better grounding than most children in the world ever do.

God be good to this wonderful woman. I prefer the half full approach. Her children learned about what true love and decency is all about. They watched a Father deal with incredible adversity with grace, courage, and dignity. The watched their Mother demonstrate loyalty and love, true love, in the face of that adversity. They watched two people as they confronted this thing, and embraced the challenge of finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. They know that their Mother, and their Father, made a difference in the world, that because of them others will live better. And these children, once past their grief, will go on, and make a difference in the world as well.

I repeat, God be good to her.

Clinton, I think the world of you, but sometimes.......

Mick

Mick, you said what I wanted to best. Thank you.

Here's another person who shared their feelings on the loss of Dana Reeve's well:

"It is impossible to overstate the goodness of this beautiful young woman, and the challenge to faith that is involved in trying to understand her death. Every minute of her life for the past decade and more has been spent doing everything she could for other people. Even the moments she took for herself, to sing, were about giving us joy. Chris was my friend; I only got to know Dana later. But I came to see her as perhaps the most extraordinary person I'd ever met. Her radiance as a woman was fueled by her love. Her love was immeasurable and generously, tirelessly given. We will miss her so, so much."— Meryl Streep

This is just another example for me to remember when I think life should be fair that it isn't and that deserving people sometimes don't get what they should (and that undeserving sometimes do).

I can't help but wonder why the very good are so often the ones we lose too soon. Why so we never hear that the famously corrupt Senator Doo-Bad has been diagnosed with (fatal disease of your choice)? The sad deaths of Dana and Christopher Reeve have left their one son, a young teenager, orphaned -- although he's surrounded by relatives and people who love him, and is reportedly an extraordinary young man. (I think that Christopher Reeve also had an older child or two by an earlier relationship.) They packed a tremendous amount of good into the times they had.

Deda, At least their son has the knowledge of woh his parents were and what they achieved. Hopefully that will provide a firm and stable foundation for him to build his own life on.

But it doesn't make Dana Reeve's pain any less at dying while her child is young. As good as she was in the world in which she lived, I think she still would have wanted to be the one to raise her son and would regret not being there for him. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. I put myself in her shoes and see a woman who wasn't old, who wouldn't feel she'd accomplished everything she could in that area.
