Help please, and as before in easy to understand lingo!

I am going to sell some items on ebay. A friend has photographed them for me and sent them to me as BMP files. But ebay only accept JPEG files. Can I convert them at my end?

Thanks in advance.

There is a free image editor with windows. I think it will do it. Open the picture and select 'save as'. When the box opens, choose the format you want. If the built in app won't do it, you may have to find a friend with PhotoShop.

You also need to keep the size fairly small. Depending on what you choose at eBay as far as the photos, 800px (pixels) across is plenty wide enough. Find a place where you can view the image size and (with the proportional protection on) resize the photo if you need to. It'll load much faster.

Why invent the wheel? MS Paintbrous, that ships with Windows ME and XP will open files in several formats, .bmp,.jpg,.jpeg,.gif, and .tif, and save the file back in any of these formats.

My version of paintbrush for W98SE will open almost anything - but will only save in several differing BMP formats.

Whether you have Paintbrush depends on what version of Windows you have. It does not generally come with WinXP, in versions I've seen; although I believe there are/were at least seven different WinXP versions available. I don't have it on my WinXP, but "she who drives a Win2K" does. The "Microsoft Picture Viewer" that's the normal default "looker" with WinXP doesn't allow you to change the filetype of a picture.

If your friend took pictures and got them into .bmp format, it's quite likely friend has some sort of image editing program. Your simplest solution might be to ask friend to send them again in .jpg format. Friends sometimes will do that sort of thing.

You might also have another friend you could send the .bmp files to (email?) who could convert them for you and send them back.

With either of the above options, be sure to tell them what eBay says you need, so that you only have to do it once.

You can use one of the programs suggested, and conversions of this kind are pretty simple with almost any of the available programs; but you will have to learn at least a few buttons to click to be able to do it yourself. It can be a lot of fun, but you may not want to get into it just for this one minor fix.

The basic answer is that it's a simple thing to do, if you have, or a friend has, a program that's able to do it.

Thanks one and all. I do not have paintbrush on my windows XP and was loathe to download something to fix the problem, because every time I do I end up with massive problems. I usually then press restore and generally panic for a couple of hours.

I adopted the john from Kansas approach and my very understanding friend has messed around at his end and sent them to me as jpegs.

They are happily sited in ebay and I await to make my fortune.

Thanks again. Until then the next time!
