One of our library's patrons wants information on this song-- recorded by Kali on his 2002 album Caribbean Blues.

It tells the story of a woman who is forced to marry the son of a wealthy merchant. She takes her wedding dress and runs off, and is found the next morning dead in the arms of her lover.

The patron would like an English translation of the lyrics:

She would also like to know if it's based on a true story.

I've googled it, searched Folk Song Index, checked our own song collection. While I don't know Creole French, I can understand a little of it.

Heres are the lyrics from the URL listed above, http://membres.lycos.fr/apapawolanle/textes/. Quite a collection of lyrics there. this is an intriguing song. I hope we can find something on it. Can anybody give us a translation?

Looks like it could be from Haiti.

Actually it's from Martinique; can anyone find me the tune? I'd like to learn it. Who doesn't like a bit of death and ill-fated love?
