All the attempts to definitively define (pun intended) folk singer and folk music remind me of a joke I once heard that I think is applicable (I'm expanding it some). Some visitors from Europe are seeing Disney World and tell some Floridians they came to America in part because they wanted to visit some Yankees. The Floridians tell them there's no Yankees at Disney World - you have to go to the North. The visitor take I-95 to _North_ Carolina, and learn there are no Yankees in _North_ Carolina, you have to go through Virginia to the North side of the Potomac River. The visitors arrive in Maryland and learn they have to go North of the Mason-Dixon line to see Yankees. Arriving in Pennsylvania, they learn there are fake Yankees in "Yankee Stadium" but to see real, authentic Yankees, they have to go through New York into New England to see some real Yankees. Arriving in Connecticut, they learn that "real" Yankees live in upstate Vermont. They find a home in Vermont right against the Canadian border, knock on the door, saying "We're so glad we've finally found some real Yankees." The owner replies, "Well, there used to be some real Yankees living here, but then we got indoor plumbing".
