Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: katlaughing Date: 11 Mar 06 - 04:49 PM Don, I'll ask Night Owl when I talk with her next, which should be today or tomorrow. She would know, having lived there most of her life and having played in a band. (She's off-line until she gets a new computer.) I'll be back.:-) kat |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: MARINER Date: 11 Mar 06 - 06:12 PM Joe Dirrane is one of the finest accordian players alive, but I too, have never heard of any of the rest of the line up. |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: Barry Finn Date: 11 Mar 06 - 06:16 PM I'll have to plan this with a visit to my mother, she's right there in West Dennis & the kids won't mind a bit. Thanks for the link Kat, that time I got it. The line up is super. It doesn't look like you'll be getting any super groups but you will be hearing quite a few super stars. There's a bunch I don't know but here's my take on those that I'm fairly familiar with. One thing that caught my ear though is that there's a strong lack on the vocals, I hope they'll rectify this as planning continues. Seamus Connolly on fiddle is probably the foremost interpreter of O'Carolan's music alive today & one of the top 3 Irish fiddlers. I'd say the best alive but I don't want to get into a pissing contest over this. Joe Derrane on the button accordion was world famous 40 yrs ago when he stopped playing & recording. He started back up again some yrs back. He was part of the original legendary Dudley Street sessions (in the Roxbury, Dudley St area of Boston) back in the 40's. The Reynolds are the off spring of famous Boston Irish fiddler Larry Reynolds Sr. They've been playing since they were as small as my dog so that puts some of them past & some of them shy of half a century. Bill Black on tenor banjo is a local legend whose name is probably not as well known as it should be. I believe he been retired for a while now & doesn't play with a super group, probably doesn't roam to far, I don't think he's recorded much but there's not a Irish banjo player playing they he can't sit next to & not call his peer. Mance Grady is likely to be this country's most gifted maker & player of the bodhran. If you play a drum & get to hear him on one of his drums, bring your check book, you'll never hear a better drummer on a better drum. I believe, though I may be wrong here that the MacIsaacs, Rankin & MacNeil are all younger parts of the famous Cape Breton musical families of the same names. Don thanks for bringing this festival up. Barry |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 12 Mar 06 - 06:28 PM It's a good one. The fellow who started it started coming to Celtic Colours and has used that experience to help shape his festival. Lew is his name. Check it out. There is usually a variety of good Scottish, Irish, Cape Breton and AMerican talent who are featured. For a relatively new festival, it's pretty fantastic. |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: TheMuse Date: 14 Mar 06 - 10:20 AM I'm seriously considering going to this Festival. Thanks for all the info. One question though, and this could probably be answered by Barry. . . is there a place to stay real near where the Festival is? I've tried to research the area and it's difficult to tell exactly where everything is. Thanks for any help with this. TheMuse |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: katlaughing Date: 14 Mar 06 - 11:12 AM TheMuse, from their website: Need more help? Call Lew at 508-760-3236. WHERE TO STAY: There are great restaurants and places to stay right along Route 28 that are within 5-10 minutes of all venues. Check out our list of sponsors for a listing of other accommodations & places to eat while here on Cape Cod. Hope that helps. Barry, you're welcome. I hope you do make it. I have mentioned it to Night Owl. I really hope she is up for it when it comes time. Have fun, folks! kat |

Subject: RE: Cape Cod Celtic Festival, How good? From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 14 Mar 06 - 12:44 PM This is a great line up! The performers from Cape Breton are all very talented . Barry, some relationships: Wendy MacIsaac is a first cousin of Ashley. Mairi Rankin is a first cousin to The Rankin Family group. Ryan MacNeil is a nephew of Rita's. Dave MacIsaac's name can be found here in many threads discussing guitar players as he is one of the worlds best for Celtic music. I see that he is doing workshops as well. I have also seen Boston's Joe Derrane play a couple of times. On the button squeezebox he may have no equal. I hope this is of some help. Slainte, Sandy |
