I'm gonna have to miss this one but some old friends from Long Island, NY, Al and Barbara Cuenin, are planning to attend. They both love to sing.

Is there still the regular Fri night session on the night before or is St Pat's taking it over?

No regular Friday Press Room session on St. Patrick's Day. There will be live music and carousing downstairs for most of the day, then we (The Great Bay Company) go on upstairs (cover) at 8 p.m. (I think it's an 8 pm start -- Tom will correct me if I'm wrong.)

Have fun one and all.

Barry, there's usually a small group of designated instrumentalists who play downstairs until the upstairs show starts. Then, in the middle of the show, a bunch of guys with bagpipes show up and play slightly louder than a F-16 taking off, only they don't. Take off, that is. Those guys have to work up 'In The Mood'...

It's not you Mary, it's my daughter. She's got a La Crosse game she's in & wants me to watch & stay. I think it's early, maybe there'll be enough time to make the session afterwards, if Justine's up for the extra driving time.

I look foreward to your threats as monkeys do looking for a barrel of bananas. Ya just never know what a mix of animals & fruits might do.
NO, I'm not calling you a fruit, you $2 monkey.

Hey out there....been a strange two weeks since Portland. Screech, screech, screech....wow, the spring hawks are out or was that a booze cry from the Newfie? We are planning to hit Portsmouth about 3 to 3:30 pm for the Press Room sing. Heading out to a lecture for Adventure and our Wednesday evening chantey sing at Schooner's Pub in Gloucester.

Not sure about the 25th yet. Trying to get one of our kids into a vehicle by the end of next week and a board meeting to attend. If we can make it we will do an up and back on the 25th. Thanks again for the great time we had at your home. I had an especially good time at the back of the room while in my own mind....I think! John was absolutely a treat to talk to and have fun with. I was really glad to see everyone shy away from the keylime pie due to fear of retalliation......the three pieces I had were great. Must have been the long knives I had stuck under me belt....aarghh! See you soon. I'm off for the back yard and a full moon. I have to confess that I really did stop on the way home and bought a bottle of Newfie Screech.

My allergies are messing up my upper respiratory tract, but it's not a virus. I don't know how good I'll be, but I missed last night and I'm planning on being there today. I got my hopes up when it was in the 50's (Farenheit-wise) and now it's cold and my sinuses are pissed off. I need to go somewhere where somebody else is paying for the heat. I'm also looking forward to seeing the dorypersons again. One (or maybe it was both of them) had me laughing so hard at Typhoid MaryMonkey's house last time (get well soon) that I had tears coming out of my eyes, and I can't remember the last time that happened.

So y'all heal or have fun or whatever. Barry, you may have one of the few kids in this country that WANTS you at a game! Be proud, do something embarrassing, then come to Portsmouth.

It was a great session, long, hard & strong, close to 20 singers + a fair group of listeners a bunch joing in on choruses. The competition with the band upstairs was I bit trying. They did need to set up but they were trying to pass of a sound check as an afternoon practice, glad that came to a halt. Al & Barbara from NYC were there & heading for the Cambridge (MIT) shanty sing today on there way home, hopefully we'll heard about that one. There were a number of locals but the Maine-aics were missing. There was a good showing from Gloucester including an old friend & good singer I hadn't seen & sung with in over 20 years, Rose who was attending with her husband another real good singer. The Gloucester folk will benifit with there new singing residents for sure. Any way it was a great time, wish I could make it more often, such a good group to sing with.

There was at least one Maine resident, though not a Mudcatter -- Brian Marston, who has been missing from the sessions for quite awhile. He was celebrating his birthday at the Press Room St. Patrick's night, so we reminded him.

Really good session, but missed the Portland and north crowd.

Tom and I were fatigued and sleep deprived after the previous night and, since he and I were 99% of the vocals at the St. Patrick's Press Room gig (and we did only about 1% instrumental tunes) our voices were a bit fatigued, too. Glad we managed to sing right up until the end of the sea music session! (Also glad there was such a large turnout that we didn't have to sing that often!)

Really good selection of songs -- really nice to have Justine singing, too!

Let's see, I'm sure Charlie wants a head count -- maybe I can remember everyone (whose names I know) -- it could happen (but I doubt it -- apologies to those I forget):

Tom Hall, Linn Schulz, Barbara & Al Cuenin (from NY), Pete & Joanne Souza, Jeri Corlew, Gardi, Barry Finn & Justine, Mark Ryer, Martha Bower, Brian & Laura, Brian Marston & Lynn (from Maine), Bruce MacIntyre was there for a bit but didn't sing (because of the noise from upstairs), Steve Carrigan, Scott Bogle ... who was all in the back tables? Who didn't sing? And who have I forgotten?

Linn

Thanks for filling in some details. I hated to miss this one but we did have fun at my favorite brother-in-law's 50th birthday party. I do plan to make the next shanty sing in April and I'll see if I can Shanghai some of the others from Portland.

Yes, Saturday was a very good sing. Lotsa songs and some new faces. That's a good thing. I'm still trying to find some codfish to soak my "screech" in!!!!Lotsa booza but no fish. Just got in from a couple of Adventure meetings and wanted to acknowledge how well Saturday went. Tom and Linn, thanks again for your dedication and consistency in making these Saturday shanty sings at the Press Room happen. Hopefully we can say that these sessions will grow and flourish in the future. They are truly amazing. Jeri, apologies for my weird sense of humor and causing you potential distress from laughing so hard....there are products available over the counter that can help contain this sort of thing....and Barry, you will not be allowed to substitute any words in songs in the future. See you all soon.
The doryman.

Pete, there's not much difference between "my liver" & "donkey's liver" in either song or body. I was just choking on my 'gall',,,,bladder.

Lynn, you left out newbies, Rose & her husband. Both real good singers.

Ayuh, I was thinking about them but missed getting them into the list. (But they WERE mentioned earlier in the thread so not forgotten entirely.)

Ach! Names!

By the way, I'm really glad I don't have any singing commitments until Friday -- my voice is definitely in need of some R&R! (Or maybe some warm mixture of honey, lemon and brandy!)

We had a wonderful time at the sing in Portsmouth on Saturday. Of course, that's been true whenever we've made it up there. The sing on Sunday at MIT was also lot's of fun. Both sessions offered good people and good songs. I think that cross fertilization among chanteysings adds a measure of vitality. Hope to see you all soon at our Seaport chanteysing in New York.

Al and Barb (Spondrift)-

Well, Barry and I are heading down for the April 22 Chantey Sing at the Seamen's Church but you are off to Oz and some of the other regulars will be at NEFFA. So, I suppose, Barry and I will have the whole place to ourselves.

Cross fertilization in ALL types of singing is wonderful -- keeps us expanding our horizons, learning new songs and not getting so damned incestuous.

Linn-

But it's scary out there on the long road, even with the intrepid Barry Finn by my side. Suppose someone pulls a "bluebook" on us? Suppose someone demands to know the difference between a forebitter and a shanty/chanty/chantie/chantey? Suppose they want to know the names of the "Seven Seas"?

"The world is very wide and there's never any know,
The countries we'll be seeing, the ports wehere we'll be going.."

Especially when Barry will be doing most of the navigating.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
