"Well, yes, I see what you mean....I'll try EVER so hard to zip my virtual lip...but temptation..."

"It's good for you to resist temptation...builds character!"

"Aren't I enough of a character already?"

"Now you're equivocating! Shame!...Go read some music threads and quit annoying the denizens down here in the basement!"

meekly..."Yes, sir..."

in the play, he only does it for his own amusement. He doesn't set up a speaker system and broadcast all his tapes out the window...

but, who am I to stretch a metaphor too far? ☺

It is right that he too should have his little chronicle, his memories, his reason, and be able to recognize the good in the bad, the bad in the worst, and so grow gently old down all the unchanging days, and die one day like any other day, only shorter.

Samuel Beckett

Did anyone ever see the play "Krapp's Last Tape" by Samuel Beckett?

"Krapp's Last Tape may strike the first-time viewer as odd and unsettling: there is a minimal set, no dramatic lighting cues, nothing that a theatergoer would call a traditional ''plot,'' and only one character, a character whose only conversations are with a tape recording of himself that he made thirty years ago. "

I see a parallel developing as all these circular, redundant, self-referential threads are archived.

Here is the entire play ...during it, Krapp eats bananas. I have no metaphor for the bananas yet...

(I actually saw this performed once....an amazing vision of a man consumed with his own flashbacks, desires, internal reviews of life expressed in rambling monologues with himself.)

You may disagree with what I or any other poster has to say and I don't expect you to defend to the death our right to say it.

But is it really too much to expect you to just ignore it?

The key word here is 'debate'. IMHO these threads are no longer a debate, merely a rehashing of your own personal gripes with the people who manage this site, with Max's blessing.

Those who you describe as managing the site - I have no gripe with at all.

Would you not accept that there is a difference between the site proper and the forum open for contributions from the public?

As our forum is simply that - what 'management' does it require?

If I do have a gripe it is with certain of my fellow posters who do not understand such a simple concept and who have constantly tried to shape our forum to reflect their personal taste and requirements by imposing them on their fellow posters. And who feel they have some right to publicly judge the worth of any poster who may express a different view, to subject them to abuse and encourage others to follow this example.

You may think that threads of over 100 posts would be a debate - but the majority of posts are simply results of an 'official' policy that encourages posting only of personal judgements of the worth of certain fellow posters or sad attempts to intentionally divert the thread's subject to something else and posted encouragements of such attempts.

Why not simply ignore any thread that is not to your taste?

Some new sayings for our time...

"I may disagree with what you say...but that doesn't mean I have to listen to it with any great attention while I am composing my devastating response to it." ;-)

"I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it...at least until my next post...)

"I may disagree with what you say, but that doesn't mean I have to be nice about it."

"I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it unless I have to admit you might have a worthwhile point."

"I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it to....the point of suffering mild inconvenience. Beyond that? Screw you!"

In your position I woud have stayed with PMs to those you consider responsible. If that didn't work I would then make a decision as to whether I wanted to continue to access the site, given the status quo, or to leave for good.

The relevance Roger? I can't see that the lyrics to which I responded could cause offence?????? I certainly don't think that a good old fashioned Anglo-Saxon word, used in the context it was here, could be considered to be a personal attack on anybody.

If you will resurrect old threads then you must expect a reaction from others. If you don't like the reaction then don't bring the threads up again.

Do you spend the whole of your time checking back on previous postings to try and trip the rest of us up Roger? Just curious.

I don't like to see gratuitous rudeness and aggressiveness both of which have been evident in the last few months. I find it difficult to see why, if one person doesn't agree with another's view, there should be such animosity.

I'm no prude - I've done bar work in London pubs and do not get easily offended by ripe language. What does offend me is the unwarranted personal attack that has resulted from my putting my own point of view on a thread. As a very good friend of mine has said - there are no wrong opinions - and I resent anyone else using bullying tactics of any kind when they don't agree with me. This puts me off of contributing to threads, particularly when I can see that certain names are regularly coming up on that thread.

I would hate to see any form of censorship and I do my best to overlook any personal attacks on me, but it does get difficult to stay quiet sometimes.

I just wonder why these posters have so much difficulty in joining in a civilised debate!

HOW HAPPY IS THE MAN!

How happy is the man that is free from all care,
That loves to make merry o'er a pot of strong beer;
With his pipe and his friend passing hours away
Singing song after song, till he hail the new day!

How happy the this isle, that is doubly blest
With meat that's delightful and drink of the best!
We live free from control, and are blest with great store,
For we have what we want. What can mortals have more?

Our soldiers are bold, they fear not the foe;
Our sailors are valiant, which our enemies know;
They are feared in each clime, they're the dread of each shore
When the trumpets shall sound and the loud cannons roar.

But since we enjoy such blessings divine,
We'll throw off all discord and to mirth incline;
We'll drink and we'll sing, passing hours away
And sing song after song, till we hail the new say.

HAPPY ARE WE ALL TOGETHER

Round this bright and social table,
Seated with a merry crew,
Not one on earth could be more happy
Than the times I've spent with you.

Cho: Happy are we all together.
Happy are we one and all.
May we lead a life of leisure,
And may we rise and never fall.

Many's the time we've left our stations.
Troubles we did have but few.
And earthly pride was all sensation.
Love was made for me and you.

Friendship brought us all together.
Friendship makes our hearts unite.
And friendship leads a life of pleasure.
'Twas friendship brought us here tonight.

Happy trails to you
Until we meet again;
Happy trails to you
Keep smilin' until then.

Who cares about the clouds if we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.

Happy Trails to you

GET HAPPY
(music: Harold Arlen words:Ted Koehler - 1930)

Pack up your troubles and just get happy
Ya better chase all your cares away
Sing Hallelujah, c'mon get happy
Get ready for the judgment day

The sun is shinin', c'mon get happy
The Lord is waiting to take your hand
Shout Hallelujah, c'mon get happy
We're goin' to the Promised Land

We're headin' 'cross the river
Gonna wash our sins in the tide
It's all so peaceful
On the other side

Forget your troubles and just get happy
Ya better chase all your cares away
Sing Hallelujah, c'mon get happy
Get ready for the judgment day

The sun is shinin', c'mon get happy
The Lord is waiting to take your hand
Shout Hallelujah, c'mon get happy
We're goin' to the Promised Land

We're headin' 'cross the river
Wash our sins away in the tide
It's all so peaceful
On the other side

We're headin' 'cross the river
Wash our sins away in the tide
It's all so peaceful
On the other side

Forget your troubles and just get happy
Ya better chase your cares away!!
Sing Hallelujah, c'mon get happy

OH, HAPPY DAY
(Edwin R. Hawkins)

Oh happy day, oh happy day; When Jesus washed, oh when He washed
When my Jesus washed, He washed my sins away; Oh happy day.
He taught me how to walk, fight and pray, fight and pray
And in rejoicing, in rejoicing every, every day, every day.

Oh happy day, oh happy day; When my Jesus washed, oh when He washed
When my Jesus washed all the sins away Oh happy day, yeah.
You see He taught me how to watch, fight and pray fight and pray
And in rejoicing, in rejoicing every day, every day

Oh happy, happy day, oh happy, happy day
Oh it felt so good when Jesus, when Jesus washed,
When my Jesus washed my sins away.

HAPPY HOUR
(Steve Gillette and David MacKechnie)

Welcome to happy hour, blinkin' on the neon sign
She won't mind if I stop for just one,
I can still make it home on time.

As my eyes grow accustomed to the smoky-dim lights
I see the jukebox by the door
And there she is in another man's arms
Slow dancin' across the floor.

So this is happy hour
Two drinks for the price of one
People laughin' and havin' fun,
What a great place to be.

Welcome to happy hour
They gather here every day
Cheatin's one of the games they play
And this time it's on me.

You're dancin' and your eyes are closed
I wonder what world you're in.
What will you tell me when you get home,
Where will you say you've been?

All the songs and laughter and his pretty words
Take away whatever made you blue
But when the fun is all over what will you do
When there's nothin' left of us but you?

So this is happy hour.
Two drinks for the price of one.
People laughin' and havin' fun,
What a great place to be.

Welcome to happy hour.
They gather here every day.
Cheatin's one of the games they play
And this time it's on me.

HAPPY DICK
(M. Wood Hill)

Whence comes it, neighbor Dick,
That you with youth uncommon,
Have served the girls this trick
And married an old woman?
Happy Dick!

Each belle condemns the choice
Of a youth so gay and sprightly;
But we, your friends, rejoice,
That you have judged so rightly;
Happy Dick!

Beauty, we know, will fade,
As doth the short liv'd hour;
Nor can the fairest maid
Insure her bloom an hour:
Happy Dick!

Then wisely you resign
For sixty, charms so transient;
As the curious value coin
The more for being ancient:
Happy Dick!

With joy your spouse shall see
The fading beauties round her,
And she herself still be
The same that first you found her:
Happy Dick!

Oft is the married state
With jealousies attended;
And hence through foul debate,
Are nuptial joys suspended:
Happy Dick!

But you with such a wife,
No jealous fears are under;
She's yours alone for life,
Or much we all shall wonder:
Happy Dick!

Her death would grieve you sore,
But let not that torment you;
My life, she'll see fourscore,
If that will but content you!
Happy Dick!

On this you may rely,
For the pains you took to win her,
She'll ne'er in childbed die,
Unless the d---l's in her:
Happy Dick!

Some have the name of hell,
to matrimony given;
How falsely you can tell,
Who found it such a heaven:
Happy Dick!

With you each day and night,
Is crown'd with joy and gladness;
While envious virgins bite
Their heated sheets for madness:
Happy Dick!

With spouse long share the bliss
Y'had miss'd in any other;
And when you've buried this,
May you have such another:
Happy Dick!

Observing hence, by you,
In marriage such decorum,
Our wiser youth shall do
As you have done before 'em
Happy Dick!

Just interpret it all subjectively as you go through the available evidence. Sift it into what you consider reasonable and what you don't. The conclusions you will come to will support your established view of the matter.
