Just caught the tail-end of her on last night's prog (Radio 3)relating her mother's childhood reminiscences, sounded wonderful, hope they repeat it!

Late Junction on Beeb 3 is always worth a listen ! A wide variety of all sorts of World and Folk music of all types

A stunning and very moving performance I thought. Her performance on Channel 5(it's got a thread of its own going now), and on this recording, show that the northerners are quietly chugging on doing our their(our) own thing; while the journos and other media folk pursue a very different meropolitan Folk Britannia agenda. Time will tell whether the tortoises or the hares win this one, but I'll put a fiver on the Geordies, Lancashire or the Lake District any time. Not sure about those folk in Hull though!

The Robin's Hood Bay contingent are certainly the darlings of the media (and rightly so). But the people who actually run things are highly metropilitan. And actually, you know, the gentleman from Robin's Hood Bay is, let's face it, just the teeeeeeensiest bit metropolitan himself.

Gregg, as a resident of Lancashire I can't help but feel that, sadly, we are running well behind the Geordies. They have Folkworks and the Folk degree course at the University whilst over here in the North West the "powers thet be" seem to think that support for Folk is promoting a Houghton Weavers concert at the local civic hall........

Slightly unfair, Ruston. The NW also has good people arranging Folkus workshops and fairly participatory folk festivals like Four Fools and Fylde.

There aren't any "powers that be" - if you think something's missing in this region you could always start it off yourself. Folk activity comes from ordinary folk just like you. It isn't necessary to hang around waiting for it to be delivered by divine intervention.

Good grief, Andrew. I think the only divine intervention is the holier than thou eminating from your posting. Why do you assume that I've so far contributed nothing to the folk scene and need you to enlighten me? I've been contributing, participating and hopefully adding to it for years. My viewpoint is that some regions are much better funded than others when it comes to folk activity - based on years of observation. The "powers that be" that I refer to aren't the ordinary participants like us, I'm referring to the authorities and bodies who provide financial support to folk events. As such, some areas are much better funded than others.

Andrewq is a little naive if he thinks there are no powers that be. The Arts Council(NW section in Manchester) is a very powerful contoller of funding to folk music. And the decisions, inevitably given the administrative structure, are not in general made by people with knowledge of folk music. Then there are councils, lottery funds etc etc, all determing who get paid and promoted. And more crucially, they decide who doesnt get paid and promoted.
   This is not to say it is impossible for your average folkie to influence what goes on. Of course we can. But you can't stick your head in the sand and say "There aren't any powers that be". of course there are, you need to find out who and where they are.

What I meant to write was that most folk activity doesn't need much funding. It is mainly the glossy showbiz end - big stage mega events - and formal education that does. There is plenty of quality folk activity in the NW - much of it by ordinary folk just getting on with playing and singing but some is even produced in the very civic venues that Ruston was decrying. Characterising civic venues as only putting on the Houghton Weavers is a complete distortion and will hardly encourage them to keep up their good work. Here in "civic" Lancashire we've recently had (or are about to get) Waterson:Carthy, Chris Wood, Bellowhead, Karine Polwart, Eliza Carthy, June Tabor, Warsaw Village Band, and a whole host of other big names (if that's your poison). We've just had Folkus's Waddow Hall participatory weekend. There are lots of private individuals promoting clubs and one off events. The grass is certainly greener in the North East but the funding there didn't just appear from the ether - people chose to animate things themselves and then persuade others to come on board.

(There is another debate to be had elsewhere, of course, about whether an activity qualifies as folk at all if it can only be done with the imprimatur of state funding...)

As Leadfingers said, Late Junction is always worth catching. Infinitely better in my view than Mike Harding's folk show on BBC Radio 2 earlier on Wednesday evenings.

I saw Kathryn Tickell and Corinna Hewat at a village near Newark (UK) two weeks ago, and they included the reminiscence played on Late Junction. It's very effective - much more so than I thought it was going to be when she introduced it. It will be a while before Kathryn teams up with Corinna again - she's now off to Israel, then touring with her band . So if you want hear it, get the CD mentioned by Guest above, which is good value anyway.
