Hey all: Happy St. Patricks Day!

Fact of the Day; St. Patrick

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not actually Irish. He
was born on March 17 around AD 385 somewhere in Roman Britain, possibly near Dumbarton, Scotland. At 16, he was captured by Irish raiders looking for slaves and he was taken there to tend sheep. After six years of slavery, he ran away and ended up wandering through southern Gaul (France) and Italy. There, he had a vision from God which told him to return to Ireland and convert the pagans to Christianity. Returning to Ireland around 432, St. Patrick did missionary work until died in 464. The country of Ireland went into mourning. The first St. Patrick's Day celebration in the United States was in 1737 in Boston.

Green beer and chips along with lyrics from Pubster buddies.
ENJOY and PEACE.
DONT LET YANKESTY DANGER DO YA.
FOR MORE DWI ARREST ARE MADE ON THIS DAY THAN ANY OTHER.

Thanks for the post, kindaloupe. ;) The fact that Patrick "might" have been Italic is an endless source of amusement for my (Tuscan) boyfriend.

Some enlightening (and highly entertaining!) reading on Patrick's life and ministry, and its ripple effects not just on Ireland, but upon Western history:

How The Irish Saved Civilization -- by Thomas Cahill

One of those delightful history books that doesn't "read" like a history book (i.e., the author doesn't just recite facts, he comments on them with wit and humor to make them really come alive.)

:)

May it be a happy day for all-

It's Friday, I've danced a longer version of my "Yeah it's Friday!" jig and am looking forward to my Friday evening hot Irish Whiskey (extra lemon, no cloves, thanks!).

Don't know what's wrong with me-I never liked the taste of beer & have never imbibed of the green sort. Yes, I have Irish blood coursing through my veins.

That doesn't mean you have anything "wrong" with you, Kaleea. ;) It just means you have taste.

And for those who don't like beer there's always whiskey. (Or mead, if you go back far enough. I don't recommend Bunratty's though; it might be an import, but it tastes suspiciously like bad white wine that has honey added as an afterthought.)

Please Ireland spare a thought for England and let them win the Rugby to-morrow, the Irish won all of the major races at the Cheltenham meeting over the past four days, crowning it out to-day with the first three horses past the post in the Gold Cup.

Yes, a Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all. But let us remember that the oldest of all Saint Patrick's Day parades, the one in New York City, still bars Irish lesbians and gays from marching. Not so the parades in Boston, Chicago, Dublin, etc., where lesbians and gays have been welcome for years. I guess the AOH, which sponsors the parade in New York City never heard of Sir Roger Casement, or Oscar Wilde for that matter. This year Susan Quinn, the presiding leader of the New York City Council, refused on principle to accept an invitation to march in the parade. Quinn is a well known lesbian, but she is also a high ranking elected public official, so the AOH felt obligated to make an exception and extend her an invitation. The only other public official I recall taking a similar stand on principle is former Mayor David Dinkins.

Had a wonderful gig at the local nursing home - very responsive, and they picked up the chorus to 'Wild Rover' quickly. Then home for corned beef and cabbage with lashings of Guiness. All in all, not a bad day!!!!

Janice in NJ I agree with you, it´s a little difficult getting those guys into the 21st century. Never a problem here in Belfast or Dublin. Best wishes from this end.

With a last minute try Ireland beat England to win the triple crown, the game was a heart-stopper, and the Irish teams first try was gifted to them by the Scottish touch judge, sure us wee Celts have to stand together.
Yes, truly a great St Patricks week-end.

I went to one of my favorite local pubs for a short while. Trouble is the pubs here gouge it to the regulars in order to take advantage of all the "once a year patrons" on St. Patrick's Day, charging admission of as much as ten bucks. A half-pint of Guinness or Harp or other imported beer, $4.00. The pubs are always jam packed and I didn't stay much more than an hour. Just wanted to touch base with some of my fellow pub friends.

Went home and cooked a corned beef cabbage dinner with all the appropriate veggies and we were joined by two friends who attended our Wedding Blessing ceremony in Clifden, Connemara Ireland on September 5, 2003. After dinner we watched "The Quiet Man" for the umpteenth time.

Overall it was a good St. Patricks Day here.

It may sound strange to you Doug, but, in all my time living in my native Ireland I have yet to have a Cornbeef and Cabbage dinner, it is surely a US thing.
And I hope you gave those Firestone boys a spin.
