Does anyone know this old gem? Some of the lyrics:

...she wouldn't look at the stage at all,
to me she seemed so glum
she wanted to sit in the front of the pit
with the fella that played the drum.

MATILDA HIGGINS was recorded by Yodelin' Slim Clark; it is on the album "Yodelin' Slim Clark," Old Homestead CD 4015.

Also recorded by Smiley Burnette in 1934.

MATILDA HIGGINS

Matilda Higgins was a girl I used to admire.
Every time I looked at her, it set my heart afire.
I went to see her Friday night just for to spoon.
I spent my wages all on her on a Sunday afternoon.

I took her to the show one day. Oh, what a dreadful hour!
I took her into the music hall to keep her out of the shower.
She wouldn't look at the stage at all. To me she seemed so glum;
Just wanted to sit in the front of the pit with the fella who played the drum.

She wouldn't go into the gallery or into the sinner's hall.
She wouldn't go into the balcony for fear that she might fall.
She wouldn't look at the stage at all. To me she seemed so glum;
Just wanted to sit the front of the pit with the fella who played the drum.

I took her home that evening and we parted at the gate.
She looked at me and sweetly said, "My dear, you should not wait."
I knew it was all over and I quickly took the boot,
So I went back to the music hall to take another look.

I asked the drummer if he'd take a glass of wine with me.
I found he was a married man possessed of children three.
Matilda Higgins she was there. Each evening she would come.
She never took her eyes away from the fella who played the drum.

She wouldn't go into the gallery or into the sinner's hall.
She wouldn't go into the balcony for fear that she might fall.
She wouldn't look at the stage at all. To me she seemed so glum;
Just wanted to sit the front of the pit with the fella who played the drum.

Maybe it will end up in the DT someday, but who cares? It can always be found here.

Thanks, Kendall.

Matilda Higgins was a girl I used to admire
Every time she looked at me, she set my heart on fire

She wouldn't go to the --- or into the sitters hall
She wouldn't go to the balcony for fear that she might fall
She wouldn't look at the stage at all, to me she seemed so glum
Just wanted to sit in the front of the pit
With the fellow who played the drums

He had a beer with me
he said he had a handsome wife, and possessed of children three

That is all I can remember!

"The sinners hall"
I asked the drummer if he would have a glass of WINE with me, not beer.

That's correct, Kendall. And the truth is, Matilda was infatuated with the man who played the banjo, not the fella who played the drum. However it's much harder to make things rhyme with banjo, so they changed it.
