Subject: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 18 Mar 06 - 02:39 AM Just discovered these, bought their latest CD - A Major Third. Don't know what to say really, great tunes, graet arrangments, really exciting music. Sort of doing for English music what a number of bands have done for Irish music. Who else are as good as 422? |

Subject: 422 What is in a name? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 18 Mar 06 - 08:10 AM I think this band are brilliant best thing around but does this name do them justice or even grab your attention? |

Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 20 Mar 06 - 02:20 PM Am I alone in thinking this band are good or am I simply alone in knowing about them? Sorry I bored you guest - have you heard them at all? |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Seaking Date: 20 Mar 06 - 02:27 PM Les, I've seen 422 and agree that they are good. If it's the same 422 I think they formed the nucleus of 'The Pack' who I saw I couple of times during the 2004 festival season. Young, talented, enthusiastic and entertaining. If nothing else, hope it makes you feel better that you're not the only one to have heard of them... |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: MMario Date: 20 Mar 06 - 02:31 PM That's the group Ian and Sam are part of, yes? Have heard only good things about them - and if the sum of the parts is greater then the whole - well - the parts are pretty phenomeonal to start with! |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: sapper82 Date: 20 Mar 06 - 03:31 PM A bit of useless information. 422's first album was called No.1. Apropriate in more ways than one as No.1, the old Great Northern Railway Stirling 8' Single preserved as part of the National Collection at York has the wheel arrangement 4-2-2. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 20 Mar 06 - 04:10 PM So, that's where the name comes from! I searched for a website but they don't seem to have one. Has this thread staggered into life? This band are very, very good. Much better than Man City, as I return to the scond half in the vain hope that they will pull 2 back against West Ham, some hope. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: MMario Date: 20 Mar 06 - 04:13 PM try Sam Pirt's page It seems to be the closest thing to a web-page they have. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 20 Mar 06 - 05:06 PM thanks a lot Mario, they certainly travel with some interesting company |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 21 Mar 06 - 11:42 AM If you are ever fortunate enough to play a session with Sam Pirt, you will understand how a consummate musician can also be great fun to play with, I've also seen him teaching younger people, and he is truly inspirational. Also a thoroughly nice bloke who loves traditional music. And this side of Phil Cunningham you will seek long and hard to find anyone who plays better accordion than him - anywhere. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Morticia Date: 21 Mar 06 - 12:34 PM Pity Sam doesn't hang out here anymore.....I spect we all miss him. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: GUEST Date: 21 Mar 06 - 12:58 PM Sam is a very busy young man with his Ethno England project and has recently bought a house and is trying to build a recording studio and is chasing about teaching all soughts of kids things so I suspect he has not got much time 422 came fron a car number plate |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Barry Finn Date: 21 Mar 06 - 01:24 PM So that's who this fuss is about. Never heard 422 but I did get to hear Sam over hear in NH when he came this way with another young one & Bill Sables (sorry Bill, can't include you as a young one) a good few years ago. Really, really nice player & a great kid (probably a kid no longer) to boot. It'd be great to hear him & his buds. Maybe they'll make it over this side soon. Barry |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 21 Mar 06 - 02:18 PM Look, I know I sound (read?) like some geek going on about some strange minority interest that only me a dog have heard, but this group make great music and the fact that so few people have responded, (and when of them was so bored......)suggests to me that a lot of people have a treat in store. 422 - Major Third Ref: FECD191 The winners of the 1999 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award present their third album. Since their inception they have juggled University courses with gigging and have emerged as a highly accomplished, tight unit with wonderfully intricate arrangements, but without having lost sight of the drive and 'soul' of the music. Folk On Tap magazine said "[their] playing is excellent, the arrangements inventive, the choice of tunes interesting and the whole imbued with the drive and energy of youth". This new CD sees them more experienced both in terms of live performance and music, but without losing sight of the essential qualities which made them stand out from other groups of young musicians. The mix is as eclectic as before taking its sources from Britain, Europe and beyond. Each CD has out-sold the previous one and this one should consolidate their position as one of the best on the UK scene. 1. Finska Polka 2. Paddy's Leather Britches/The Breakdown/The Stool of Repentance 3. Del Caro's Hornpipe/Peveril Castle 4. McDermot's Polka 5. Lopez Hornpipe/Rosewood Jig 6. Levantine's Barrel/I Married a Wife Yet I Did Not/Doctor Morrison's Seven Thistles 7. The Golden Rooster/East Winds 8. Trip to Scarborough/Himlen's Polska 9. The Culfadda/Mary Clare/Archie Menzies 10. Ost og brød/Sounds Of The Underground 11. Young Scottie/Freeland's Jig #2/Jim Anderson's Favourite 12. Return from Helsinki/Schottis efter Magnus |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: GUEST Date: 21 Mar 06 - 06:44 PM The name 422 came from the fox hunters jig being tune number 422 in o'neills 1001 gems which the band was apparently playing while trying to think of a name!! |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Cod Fiddler Date: 22 Mar 06 - 04:25 AM 422 are fabulous. All of their CDs are packed with original sets arranged with consumate wit, intelligence and innovation and performed with style. With a very distinctive sound, all of their own, they stand out in the music world, particularly given their youth. I think we can expect even greater things to come. If you haven't heard them, make the effort! |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 22 Mar 06 - 06:33 AM To Barry Finn - the other "youngster" who did the US trip with Bill Sables and Sam Pirt was Ian Stephenson. Ian was also one of the members of 422, playing guitar. Ian is currently playing guitar with the Kathryn Tickell band. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: mooman Date: 22 Mar 06 - 07:00 AM No... they are not good. They are quite excellent! Have played with Sam and Ian (and possibly others of 422 whose names I can't remember) who are both consumate musicians. And that was a few years ago. Peace moo |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: GUEST Date: 23 Mar 06 - 04:52 AM I belive that the name 422 was chosen for the band after Joey the bands whistle player was playing at a celidh. He won the raffle with ticket number 422 and the same night they were trying to think of a name of the band, so he suggested the number, as a joke, and it stuck!! |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: GUEST Date: 23 Mar 06 - 08:07 AM So, a railway engine wheel arrangement, a car number plate or a raffle ticket. Of such things myths are made. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Linda Kelly Date: 23 Mar 06 - 02:27 PM Not only are 422 excellent but they metamorphose into other groups including The Pack who appeared at Cambridge a while back -too much talent for me -they make me feel old! |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 23 Mar 06 - 02:55 PM I was thinking of metamorphosing into the Chieftain's or pssibly the whole of the Morris Ring but so far I have cause to look at wigs and I keep hearing bells |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: GUEST Date: 24 Mar 06 - 02:50 PM I had heard that they were trying to think up a name at a festival and at the festival they were in a session which finished at 4.22 in the morning, and so they had their name. |
Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: Barry Finn Date: 24 Mar 06 - 03:27 PM Thanks Geoff for the reminder. Ian, exceptional on the guitar but not suprising looking at the company he was keeping & another nice lad, too. Barry |

Subject: RE: 422 Quite good then? From: MMario Date: 20 Apr 06 - 10:33 AM Brand spanking new site - judging by the dates on the pages - and they even have a section where people can submit theories regarding the name!!!! (But you have to submit a photo as well) |
