Out west in Washington where I learned to use the sauce we pronounced it "Wurster-sure" keeping the "shire" intact but slighly slurred.

I think it was probably a mistake to have faith in HP sauce to start off with.

An HP sauce apostate.......the chances of finding a support group are minimal.

Time to face future bravely: that means everything; the new label and the squeezy bottle.

Reminded me of a commercial for some sorta barbeque sauce: They used

Bar-bar-bar-bar-bar-be-que, bar-bar-bar-bar-bar-be-que--and all I could think was, "Is nothing sacred anymore?"

Incidentally, it's Worcestershire Sauce. There's no 'h' in it. Or 'p' either for that matter.

Just to help on this discussion I have copied and pasted this article from a Birmingham website.

Worcester Sauce

Worcestershire Sauce was brought back from India by Lord Marcus Sandys, ex-Governor of Bengal, who gave it to two local chemists, John Lea and William Perrins, with an order for a large batch to be made up from his recipe. A few weeks later he returned to pick up the sauce, only to proclaim upon sampling some that it tasted filthy and was nothing like how it should be, and left in disgust.

Nothing more was thought of this until the chemists discovered it at the back of their stores a few months later, and they decided to give it just one more try before tipping it down the drain. To their surprise, the foul-tasting anchovy broth, after being left to ferment, had matured into an interesting spicy condiment, and they immediately purchased the recipe from Lord Marcus. So thanks to this chance retasting,1838 saw the UK's best-known sauce launched, and the name of Worcestershire Sauce (originally called just Worcester Sauce), has spread to be mispronounced by many a foreigner in every corner of this spherical world.

In the UK, Worcestershire is pronounced 'woost-ur-shire' and Worcestershire Sauce is referred to as 'Worcester Sauce', pronounced 'woos-tah'. In many other parts of the world, however, it is referred to as 'War-sest-uh-shire' Sauce.

How dare people confuse Worcester Sauce with HP sauce.

As a Brummy, we were proud of our HP Sauce, M&B Mild, Ansells Bitter, Cadburys Chocolate, GEC, British Leyland, Aston Villa, The Rotunda (which my brothet heped to build), Spaghetti Junction, The Brummies Speedway Team, Birchfield Harriers (one of the finest athletic clubs - my father ran for them, and should have gone to the olympics, which his parents couldn't afford, so he didn't go (major diapointment for him), Warwickshire Cricket Club, Jasper Carrot (but not his crap B'ham City :-) ), The Bullring.

Ah those were the days when work was plenty and Brum was a thriving city. Get very dispondant when I go back now.

Better come back to reality at Market Rasen where the grass is green, the air fresh and bugger all to do except for going to great folk clubs such as Gainborough and Market Rasen. :-)

HP, A-1, Wooster - it's all basically the same flavor type. Anchovies optional, I guess.

I use a bit in recipes at times, but I sure don't like it glopped on my steak.

There is no sauce in the known universe which can compare favorably with that of The Pig Barbecue in Jacksonville, Florida. It is a fact. It is well-known that all references to "ambrosia" or "manna" in ancient religious tracts were originally references to Pig Barbecue sauce but had to be changed because it would be too much work for the priests to have to explain how their various gods were able to partake of something that wouldn't be created for thousands of years.

Foolestroupe, HP's Brown Sauce isn't it? Are you thinking of Tomato Ketchup? In the UK, 'HP' means brown sauce and 'Red Sauce'means tomato ketchup. You'd get some very funny looks if someone asked you to pass the HP and you gave them tomato ketchup. LOL!

We don't seem to have Daddies Sauce in the US. Guess I'll have to stick with HP. It can be improved with a little Tabasco.
