From: George Papavgeris

David Kidman, he of the inexhaustible repertoire and the passionate delivery, is appearing for a showcase at Herga FC on Monday 20th March at 8:00pm Venue: Weald Room, Harrow Arts Centre, Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Middx HA5 4EA.

David is also appearing at St Albans on Sunday night, but he has planned two different sets for the two nights ("entertainment" for St Albans in deference to Breezy, and "the good ones" for Herga in deference to their higher quality expectations - c'mon Breezy, waiting for the retort!).

Perhaps his 'fan club' from the Grove at Leeds will hire a bus and come down and support him (hee hee)

Well, they'd be welcome to both St Albans & Herga; though I suspect they will not follow your suggestion, GUEST. Some things run deep - but hey, that's life, and life is too short to be getting involved in other people's personal matters.

and who from Leeds do you think would be able to afford the 50p entry fee anyway?

Leeds are generally losers, since Don Revie's days.

When I visited the club way back when , on a regular once a week visit, in all that time, 3 years, not one bugger said hello.

things dont seem to have changed, miserable bunch then , grumpy old farts now.

Even caused Keith Marsden's guitar to fall apart one night in despair

Folk club residents' attitudes can be very daunting and I agree there are some funny folk about!

Singing out of your area can be either very well recieved or you don't even get a look in (song). I have had many such experiences over the years and you can only try to take things in your stride

We are talking Art form among other things and peer group acceptance

It is a funny old world and often singers are better appreciated away from their own backyard!

Good luck Dave

Come on, Guest. You can't make that sort of comment and not identify yourself. Maybe you should be Guest: Bully-Coward?

Can't comment on 'The Grove' but I have to spring to the defence of the folks in Leeds (or to be more accurate Otley) that I've met recently. Decent bunch, friendly, hospitable and generous to a fault.

Agree about Otley, Ref - and Keighley folk too are very open and welcoming. Haven't been to the Grove either, so can't comment.

Yes it did go well. A varied and entertaining set from Dave, and excellent contributions from everyone else.

Have an easy trip home on the morning Dave.

Hi Breezy!

As a Yorkshire lass I have to take issue with you.

'Catters: PLEASE don't be put off northern clubs by Breezy's comments. The clubs up here are welcoming, warm and friendly. Usually very cheap too. For example our club (Kiveton Park FC) has a £1 entrance fee on non-guest nights and that includes a supper! Drinks at club prices and FREE tea and coffee.

Turn up at most northern clubs and ask for a spot and you'll get it, or they will do their best to put you on. I can think of a few Southern clubs who would not even think of putting on a stranger.
Sound familiar to anyone?

Anyway, all 'Catters welcome up here.

Rhiannon

Oh good. We're due for a guest appearance there on 1st August. I hope you'll be there - it's good to have some familiar faces at a club we've never been to before!

Sorry Anahata and Mary, but Mick and I will be enjoying the luxuries of a 5 star country house hotel that week. Even the wonderful KPFC can't complete!

As to familiar faces - well I wouldn't worry about that. Everyone is great. Insults are flung between regulars (and Andy, who MCs it), and laughs are aplenty. You will find that you will be well received and enjoy the night.

Luv

Rhiannon

Just arrived back, having been told about the thread, so I'll report direct that I had a great time down at Herga and St Albans.
The clientele for each club consists entirely of good appreciative folk (who enjoy chorus singing too!). So it follows that I got a genuine, warm welcome at both clubs and by all accounts did good - so my thanks to Mike S, George C and Breezy the ultra-capable organisers for taking the chance and inviting me down.
Several Catters turned up (and stayed!!); heartening to see those who came along to both venues (your support most valued: El Greko, Moses and Ref). And extra special thanks to Les and Carys for travelling over from Bishop's Stortford.
It all went very well indeed, and so I'm sure I'll be widening the net on my next trip down south.

Last but not least - Linda, Bob, RPadgett, Guru, Alio and Barb'ry, thanks for the good wishes. See you again soon.

Oh and yes Ray P, how so very true your comment about singers being better appreciated away from their own backyard!
