Subject: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: yrlancslad Date: 19 Mar 06 - 08:19 PM I'm about to make a CD of Lancashire songs and want to include this one but have known it for so long I can't remember anything about it, nor where I got it in fact this may not even be the right title. Can anyone help? The song begins:-
I donned misell to wander afore the dew were dry To wander in the gay, green woods reight early I did rove It made me for to think upon the one that I do love |
Subject: RE: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Mar 06 - 08:29 PM Hi, Malcolm - I couldn't find it, but I was wondering if you could post the entire song for us. Roud has six songs that talk about "the dawn of the morning," but not this one. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: yrlancslad Date: 19 Mar 06 - 09:52 PM Last line of first verse should be:- I could not sleep upon mi bed for thinkin' of mi love
I donned misell to wander afore the dew were dry To wander in the gay, green woods reight early I did rove I could not sleep upon mi bed for thinkin' of mi love The cowslip and the speedwell wi' a dewdrop in its ee (eye) The wild rose and the bluebell, they blend so bonnily And the honeysuckle wandering wild wi violets blue I wove They made me for to think upon the girl that I do love And when I pooed(pulled) mi posy, the small birds they did sing And when I wove mi garland they made the woods to ring From every tree the wild birds glee rang through the leafy grove As I came away at dawn of day still thinkin' of mi love Oh the mornin sun it rises to cheer mi hearts delight And the silver moon she wanders among the clouds at night And the twinklin' stars that shine so fine all in the heavens above At work or play, bi neet (night) or day, I'm thinkin; of mi love |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GARLAND (Edwin Waugh) From: Mark Dowding Date: 21 Mar 06 - 12:44 PM Hi again Malcolm Below are the full set of words to The Garland by Edwin Waugh The tune that he uses is "Cupid's Garden" which requires the second half of the last line of each verse to be repeated. Looking forward to the CD Cheers Mark The Garland (Edwin Waugh) Twas when the dawn of morning began to stir in t'sky I donned misell to wander afore the dew were dry To wander in the gay, greenwood reight early I did rove I could not sleep upon mi bed for thinkin' of mi love (For thinking of my love) Down in a bonny dingle where sometimes we did stray Our vows of love to mingle at close of summer's day It's there where oft among her hair the flowers of spring I've wove I sat me down to think upon the girl that I do love (The girl that I do love) It's there I made a garland my darling for to don And the posies that were in it they shined like the sun The dewy posies wild and sweet all in the leafy grove It breaks my heart to think upon the girl that I do love (The girl that I do love) The cowslip and the speedwell wi' a dewdrop in its ee (eye) And the wild rose and the bluebell, they blend so bonnilie And the honeysuckle wandering wild wi violets blue I wove They made me for to think upon the girl that I do love (The girl that I do love) And when I pooed(pulled) mi posies, the small birds they did sing And when I wove mi garland they made the woods to ring From every tree the wild birds glee rang through the leafy grove As I came away at dawn of day still thinkin' of mi love (Still thinking of my love) Oh the mornin sun it rises to cheer mi hearts delight And the silver moon she wanders among the clouds at night And the twinklin' stars that look so fine all in the heavens above At work or play, by neet an day, I'm thinkin' of mi love (I'm thinking of my love) |
Subject: RE: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: yrlancslad Date: 21 Mar 06 - 01:11 PM Thanks Mark, the CD has been held up by my sustaining a running injury which has put me out of ciculation for a couple of months. So I'm taking the opportunity to write up the liner notes while I'm stuck here in the house. The final song list is not yet decided and probably won't be until much later in the process but probables include The Garland of course(which I sing to a different tune-no idea where I got it), A mon like thee, Owd Sammy Shuttleworth, From the North,A begging I will go,The Plodder Seam,I means to wait for Jack,The four loom weaver,Bacon Butty,Dorothy Drew,Our Bill,Rawenstall Annual Fair,The coal and Albert Berry, Dance little Mon, Chips and Fish and Farewell Manchester. Other possibles are Paddy works on the Railway, cross country smokin',a monologue (maybe Androclese an't'Lion) and Doin'the Manch. I know this last isn't a Lancs song, but I have become so identified with it over here I can't possibly leave it off! |
Subject: RE: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: Mark Dowding Date: 21 Mar 06 - 04:11 PM Harry Boardman used to sing two tunes - the tune he sings on "A Lancashire Mon" is the one that isn't "Cupid's Garden" but he's also done it to "Cupid's Garden" as well. How do "our" songs go down over there in Santa Cruz? Presumably you haven't got progressive, go-ahead, station editors wanting to pull your show! Hope you get well soon Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Origins-Twas when the dawn of morning From: yrlancslad Date: 21 Mar 06 - 08:41 PM Hi Mark, sent you a whle long screed about the above and then accidentally wiped it, guess it'll have to wait till we meet again, hopefully in July and August when I aim to be singing over there again Tek cur Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Origins: The Garland (Edwin Waugh) From: GUEST,Petehulme Date: 13 Jan 21 - 01:02 PM Hi Mark Do you happen to know what the tune is called that Harry used on A Lancashire Mon. I think it's a lovely tune and it feels very familiar but I can't think of any other songs it's used in. |
Subject: RE: Origins: The Garland (Edwin Waugh) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Jan 21 - 02:55 PM Just so you're aware that post was from 14 years ago. Someone might answer it, but Mr. Dowding hasn't posted on Mudcat since spring of last year. Good luck with your search! |
