Thought I'd pass this on. On NPR's "All Things Considered" this evening, Paul Brown did a nice piece on the the importance of the 3 vol. set of clawhammer banjo that Charles Faurot collected, and how it kept the tradition from dying out. Here's the link.

Nice link.
I found Vol and Vol 3 as imported LPs about 25 years back and listening to them was a very important part of what became my banjo playing style.
I definitely recommend the recordings.

If I may be allowed a bit of hyperbole...
Every revivalist, boomer, old time banjo player was influenced by those LPs. I almost literally wore mine out.

Thanks for all you kind and generous remarks. Good news that you liked the LPs; the CDs are slightly better: more tunes, more words and pictures.

Better news is that I am working with Dave Freeman and Chris King at County to release a two volume (maybe three) series on old time banjo. Still will be a bunch of clawhammer stuff that I haven't gotten around too back then. Other styles will include some three finger by Lena Hughes (more well known for her guitar work), Lily May Ledford on some double thumbing tunes (where less is really more), Gather Carlton and North Carolina up-picking and Kenny Rorer working with Grey Craig.

Thanks Hoot.   I found out it's an inside joke with Janie! The thread drift idea is very funny if you have all of the inside information. The County Sales website isn't coming up for me today. Maybe they are doing site maintenance? I have always been happy with what I've bought there. (Unlike some other on-line record suppliers.) I don't have the Faurot records on vinyl. Most of my old vinyl banjo stuff is Bluegrass, and it's all at my Mom's place.

O.K, I admit defeat.
But Joe, if you are near Floyd, call in any Monday to Friday and see Wanda who seems to oversee all the stock in the warehouse and you can either ask her to pull it/them from stock or wander around yourself. One word of warning though it's an Aladdin's Cave down there and you could easily overspend your budget.
I have been ordering from them since 1968 with no problems.

If I win a lottery I'll buy a ticket to Virginia and go straight to Floyd.

Actually,I never buy the state lottery tickets, but every once in a while my wife gets one, and California is a community property state!

Meanwhile, I'll get the Faurot CDs, and keep on playing banjo myself. My own style is prety much set, due to my own limitations as a player, and advancing age.   But I love to hear good playing in many different styles. Sounds like the Faurot CDs are just what I need.   

As for defeat, I often stomp defeat while I play, but not always.

No I don't, I actually live in a little place about 4000 miles distant across the Atlantic Pond it's called England, but I have had the pleasure of visiting on a number of occasions.

In doing research on Lena Hughes for a parlor guitar CD for County Records, I came accross this thread. Glad you have enjoyed the County LPs and, hopefully, the expanded CD Set. You will b e glad to know that County is looking at releasing a 4 CD Box set of its legends. Obviously some of the tracks will be from currently available CDs, but more than half will be from material no longer available on CD. All told 27-28 tracks per CD and 30%+ will be new material.
