General Don Carlos Buell

was born 3/23/1818
(d.11/19/1898)

The army of Ulysses S. Grant is forced back but, reinforced by Buell, beat off the army of A.S. Johnston.
Shiloh was the first battle to show how bloody the Civil War would be.

          Was early the next morning we fit the fight again
          Unmindful of the wounded; unuseful to the slain
          The cannon smoke did hide the sun, 10,000 was the kill
          And streams of blood went running on the top of Shiloh's hill
