Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Graham and Jo Date: 26 Mar 06 - 01:42 PM Friday sessions can't start any earlier than nine because of the food. But the sessions are welcome. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: harpmaker Date: 01 Apr 06 - 07:58 AM Great session last night (fri), but it was a great shame the new management could not be bothered to move the pool table for us. Also the background (piped) music was far to loud. They are not bothered about us musos, I overheard a few bad comments last night. Its a great shame, but as one of last nights organisers pointed out, (mentioning no names) 'when they find out that the food thing does not work, they will move on. Until then, personally I feel that we could do a lot better somewhere else. Sorry I cant be more positive than this. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 01 Apr 06 - 03:55 PM Well, I would expect background music to be swiched of when a session is taking place. I'm due to host the session on 9th April in the Sun so would appreciate any other feedback before then R |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 02 Apr 06 - 06:13 AM Busy in there last night. Rock and roll band - 3rd Stone - went down very well! Maybe that's the future?!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,warpy Date: 03 Apr 06 - 05:25 AM All you regulars of the Friday session at the Sun why not come and support the Black Boy session in Hull. Its a great session and yet very few of the Beverley crowd ever come.Deep paranoia! am I so hated by the local folkies that you don't come or is it just Hull that puts you off.Its tonight anyway 1st monday of the month. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Carol Date: 04 Apr 06 - 04:27 AM Is it mainly tunes or is there some sining sorry singing?? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: stallion Date: 04 Apr 06 - 04:39 AM ditto, is there any singing and where is the Black Boy |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Sttaw Legend Date: 04 Apr 06 - 04:56 AM Ye Old Black Boy |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,ossonflags at werk Date: 04 Apr 06 - 07:36 AM I understand it is a musicians only session and singers are'nt welcome....... except to listen and drink that bloody awful "Real Ale". Not a drop of decent keg beer in sight. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Paco Rabanne Date: 04 Apr 06 - 08:17 AM I went to last months session at The Black Boy and it was tunes only, played a bloody sight faster than I could cope with, the musical standard was very high. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,ossonflags at werk Date: 04 Apr 06 - 08:35 AM Completley agree Teddo, know most of the muso's who go and if you are into tunes it is one of the best around. But as I am only a singer I much prefare a mixed session. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Carol Date: 04 Apr 06 - 09:11 AM So do I - prefer it mixed and mainly songs I can understand - preferably in English! |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 04 Apr 06 - 12:08 PM I dunno, I went last night, played my usual clanking guitar, AND sang two or three songs, and even got a clap!. You are right, it is certainly principally a scratchers, puffers, bangers and twangers session, but I've never been spat at for singing a couple of songs- why, they even asked me to sing! Anyway it is a very good, if quite concentrated session, there were very few breaks in the tunes. It's ideal for any instrumentalist, especially one who is looking to get faster and learn loads of tunes. And it IS a lovely pub! Anyway, come to the Tuesday session at the Six Bells in Barrow, tonight or any Tuesday night, that is definitely a mixed session! |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: the one Date: 04 Apr 06 - 12:20 PM me merry & karl went was going to sing we shall over come but they over came us in a nice way, not a drunk among them, alas. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,beverley regular Date: 04 Apr 06 - 01:09 PM Working all week its handy to get out and relax on Fridays. Coping with Mondays and driving not possible just now so can't make Black Boy session. Come and play with us? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: mississippi john Date: 04 Apr 06 - 02:19 PM talking to one of our sunday singers from hull last night at the foresters folk club, he told me that he went to one of the friday night sessions at the sun inn. when he eventually was allowed to sing a song, he was totally ignored. ( so much for a welcome ). if you dont play tunes it would seam to be, DONT GO. Hi Rodger, the forth sunday session last month i ran at the sun, i asked the guy behind the bar to turn off the back ground music, he did so at once. its a pity you have to make a point of asking about it |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: harpmaker Date: 04 Apr 06 - 07:07 PM They used to have moulders arms, for a month. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Paco Rabanne Date: 05 Apr 06 - 03:54 AM How did they get mouldy arms john? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,ossonflags at werk Date: 05 Apr 06 - 04:44 AM Never had a problem about singing at "Sun" friday sessions, in fact I am ALWAYS asked to sing. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Cod Fiddler Date: 05 Apr 06 - 10:00 AM I am pretty certain that singers are absolutely welcome at the Black Boy. However, I think the general idea is that songs sung should be of the lively variety, preferably with a good chorus with which people can join in - as Bloke and his applause testifies. Perhaps Warpy can confirm? Richard |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: stallion Date: 05 Apr 06 - 10:04 AM generally speaking, that is all we do, big rousing chorus songs! |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: ossonflags Date: 05 Apr 06 - 10:44 AM I think I could just about manage "lively"!! but'tis no big deal Richard, just prefare the sessions were everyone is encouraged to have a go. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: ossonflags Date: 05 Apr 06 - 10:51 AM Oh, and if you want to see a bit of lively with rousing choruses come and see "Punch The Horse" at "Durty Nellies" just across road from "Black Boy" this very Friday night. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: ossonflags Date: 05 Apr 06 - 10:53 AM Sorry..........I apologise in advance for the blatent self plug and thread drift. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Paco Rabanne Date: 06 Apr 06 - 08:41 AM to err is human, to drift is divine... anybody else going to see Martin Simpson in Hull then? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Sttaw Legend Date: 06 Apr 06 - 03:35 PM "anybody else going to see Martin Simpson in Hull then?" I think I may pop along Ted |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Graham and Jo Date: 06 Apr 06 - 06:39 PM Of course singers welcome Fridays. Mostly we play tunes but some sing too. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: GUEST,ossonflagsatwerk Date: 07 Apr 06 - 01:45 AM Are we there this Sunday? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 07 Apr 06 - 03:44 AM Well, I will be. May call in today just to check that we are still welcome. R |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: ossonflags Date: 07 Apr 06 - 04:59 AM Let us know plaese? |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 08 Apr 06 - 09:48 AM didn't have time to go in so will assume that everything is OK for 4pm tomorrow R |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Bassic Date: 08 Apr 06 - 03:07 PM Re Black boy session. This was set up by Warpy and me as a "tunes session" specifically because there wasnt one in Hull on a regular basis and we knew that there were instrumentalists that were looking to go to exactly that. So that was what it said on all the flyers and adverts that were handed out and that has been almost exactly what has happened. It is true that our "bloke" gets to sing a couple of songs most weeks, usually when the players have collapsed with exhaustion and there is a slight pause in the procedings. He does however earn that "indulgence" with his non stop guitar accompaniment to the tunes right through the night and he inevitably gets an "orchestral" sized accompaniment which wouldnt suit alot of singers but I think he accepts that as par for the course. I am sure I speak for Warpy also when I say that we want to keep the Black Boy session as being identified as a "tunes only" session, as that was where we saw the need in the local session scene. However it is such a good venue I see no reason (if the landlord aproves) for a mixed session to be held on one of the other Mondays in the month if there was a demand. I would certainly support both and enjoy the mixed sessions that I go to that already exist elsewhere. However, without wanting to appear dictatorial, I want to make the "tunes session" status of the First Monday session quite clear so that no one turns up expecting somthing other than that and then thinks we are being rude in not necessarily invitng them to perform. I hope that makes the situation clear to everyone. I think we have quite a rich choice of sessions in the Humberside region with something for just about everybody in the variety of formats. I think the First Monday session has its place in helping to sustain that variety and choice and it is atracting players from both banks of the Humber and from West and South Yorkshire quite regularly so I think it is fulfilling our expectations. Now all I have to do is find a way of not having to work on Monday nights so I can get to go to our session again! ;-) |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: harpmaker Date: 08 Apr 06 - 06:03 PM Thanks for that Gordon. Is the session in the front or back room? The front room used to be noted for its good acoustics. I have talked to the new licence's of the Sun and aired my greifs about the fri night session. They are willing to 'compromise' over our needs for music. 1. The Pool table. They want to cater for everybody, so they have offered the snug to us. They cannot move the table further back as it is a fire risk blocking the fire doors. The snug may be a bit small for us, and if we get a good turnout we can move into the main room (if appropriate) Smokeing is allowed. 2. Piped music. They have 'compromised' and said that the piped music will take place in the pool room only. 3. Singers ignored. This is a complete and utter load of bollocks. Singers are more than welcome. And finnaly, we are introducing an interval between 10 and 10:30 when a 'belly dancing' teacher is going to show us the ropes. We are 'ALL' encoureged to take part in her teachings. We are 'ALL EXPECTED' to put on a show for the festival. If you beleive that then..............;-) John :-) |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: oombanjo Date: 09 Apr 06 - 06:15 AM Todays the day to ask the questions. Be there if you have any to ask. None of us want to change, but if it has to be, sooner now than later. Oombanjo. sorry for the late posting, the traveler returns, |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: Les from Hull Date: 09 Apr 06 - 09:36 AM Tha Black Boy session is in the back room (the main room). It wouldn't fit in the small room. |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: harpmaker Date: 09 Apr 06 - 11:55 AM Oh and to give credit where its due, I must say the beer is spot on! |
Subject: RE: SUN INN - BEVERLEY From: ET Date: 09 Apr 06 - 01:42 PM Just back (early) from Sun Sunday Session - many many musicians (and me). Starts 4 pm after food time. Next Sunday its Hodgsons I think! |
