Funny that so many black jazz musicians moved to Paris in the 40's and 50's to avoid racism in the United States. They were much more respected there.

But it appears that attitudes often change as the number of immigrants/minorities/target-population-of-choice increases. A handful of black musicians is "artistic", a neighborhood of them is a threat. We call this "white flight" in the U.S.--white people don't mind minorities until they move into the neighborhood, at which point the whites move somewhere else.

(Not my personal viewpoints, of course, but we see it a lot, altough hopefully we'll see it less as time goes by.)

I don't know why everyone thinks racism is an American peculiarity.

Comparing the statistics, over eight years, the French actually seem to have improved considerably--nearly fifty percent in the first survey were very, or fairly, racist, while the second study shows that the only about 33% percent responded that they were racist, and those were slightly, or a little racist--

So thank you, rarelamb, for showing us that the French have become less racist, both in numbers and in degree--perhaps if we could all try to be more like them, racism would disappear--

Well, it's not just the French. Racism? There's a lot of it about, all over the place. For example read here

A poll of attitudes among Israel's Jews towards their country's Arab citizens.... found that more than two-thirds of Jews would refuse to live in the same building as an Arab. Nearly half would not allow an Arab in their home and 41% want segregation of entertainment facilities.

I posted this article because I wanted to show the duplicity on the left. Notice how some of the left thinking people tend to gravitate to be French apologists? Why? Is it because the French are more liberal or because the French delight in snubing the US?

This standard bearer of anit-americanism IS a nation of people. And as such they have the same problems. They are just and possibly MORE bigoted than Americans.

Maybe this will give some of you hate-America-firsters a pause for thought before espousing your US hatred.

I would say though that I am very impressed and surprised with Villepin at this point in time.

I was not specific as to who I wished to answer my question, as you pointed out David, as several people have been using this posting method lately, so I was certainly not "waiting" right by the Computer for a reply from you or anyone else. As to your remark regarding my impatience, well I had a Garden to attend to and wanted to get back outside.
I have already received a very nice PM in reply to my enquiry from someone else you will be happy to hear. So no one need answer my question on this Thread which I will not be visting again.

Now back to enjoying what is, here where I am anyway, a most delightful Spring day.
As my late long Lunch break is now over.
It has been 13 years since I lived in France but still, I must say, I enjoy taking my time at the Lunch and Dinner table...especially outside.:)

I've often speculated how things would have turned out if the Franco-British wars in America had turned out the other way. A lot better for the Native Americans, that's for sure. And, I suspect, very likely a lot better for Black Americans, and for the world at large.

The French are a puzzlement, but they are also brave, courteous, intelligent, cultured, and their women are FABULOUS.

Best taken like tablets, one at a time, and not in large groups. In large groups they are liable to start forming governments. ;-)
